I'm glad that it isn't just me who does things like that. I've been known to accidentally say "Osu" and call my Sifu "Sensei" in Wing Chun class... I was the same when I was at school, though - I used to take French, Latin and Spanish classes and I'd regularly 'invent my own language' by getting them all confused.

Congratulations! Keep up the good work.

Well, as I'm stilll pretty mutch a WC newbie, can you explain in more detail the concept of "motherline" please? I've heard of (and am beginning to 'get') the term centreline, as used in WC, but I've not heard of motherline before. Thanks. BTW, good posts DM! No, seriously! -
Hello there Hoi! Welcome to Karate Forums.

Well, I've come down with yet another cold. Since about September I seem to have been plagued with the things. It doesn't help that I have asthma either, as the colds make it worse. The annoying thing is that I've been taking Echinacea and Vitamin C supplements this year to try and prevent colds (I work with kids so I get all their ailments). However, I've been taking the supplememnts and I seem to have more colds this year that I have done before. So, it's another day resting today (a little light typing on KF won't hurt!) with lots of water to drink and paracetamol. What does everyone else do when they get a cold?

Sorry, you lost me about 6 words in... Hope you get it fixed, though. I know how annoying pc troubles can be.

Heian Nidan is the 3rd kata that we learn, after Kihon (Taikyoku Shodan) and Heian Shodan.

Getting your first belt/grade is a great feeling. I think I was possibly more pleased when I graded for and passed my 9th kyu (orange belt) than when I graded for and passed my Shodan! Keep up the good work!

Do the old rivalries still exist?
aefibird replied to Nick_UKWC's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I dunno about that one. In an ideal world, sure. But we're all human and will not like everyone we reun across just because they are MA. People tend to think there there is some type of brotherly bond among MA, or at least that there should be. MA are just like anyone else. Some like eachother, some do not. Not liking them does not mean you go to their school and drop challenges, though. Well, I wasn't meaning that we live in a happy little world where everyone is lovely and nice to one another with birds singing all day long... I know that MAists don't always get on - I've experienced that with my own dojo. However, I was trying (very badly, obviously!) to say that it's better to have the goal of working together rather than challenging one another. It ain't gonna happen, though, and if a MAist doesn't agree with another MAist then they should just stay away from them, rather than issue challenges. That's probably more to do with the press in the UK rather than the press in the USA. Only last week there was a big story in one of the tabloid newspapers about how a 'deranged' and 'dangerous' martial artist was caught with a 'deadly weapon'. It turns out that the guy was a well-respected instructor who was practicing a sword form in his own garden... However, the media blew the story out of all proportion. One account of it that I heard of even called for all martial arts weapons to be banned, as they were a 'real danger to the safety of the ordinary people'. Ordinary people!! Obviously MAists aren't 'ordinary'... -
As there has been several posts about sparring gear recently I thought we'd have a little poll. What colour sparring gear do you wear, if any?

Please Help - Advice needed on Focus Targets
aefibird replied to valaxone's topic in Equipment and Gear
Ditto! I'd recommend ebay as a good source of MA gear. If you don't want to purchase from ebay then check with your sons MA club and see which brands they use. If possible, go for leather rather than vinyl, as it'll be longer lasting and hardwearing. Although, if the pads are only going to be used by your son you should be able to get away with buying the cheapest sort. We have Century, Blitz and Playwell gear at my karate school. As for drills with focus pads, try asking your son's instructor. Or you could join the class and have a go yourself! I know several martial artists who have become involved in MA because of their children training. -
Thanks Shannon, we are! :D Welcome to Karate Forums, hope to see you making some posts on here of your own!

Excellent point, Shane. IMO, Martial Artists often get enough bad press from those outside of the MA world, without stirring up trouble within it as well. Working together for the good of the community is something that MAists should strive to do much more. -

aefibird replied to pyeman's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yes, he's a super instructor. I've had the pleasure and privelage of training under him a couple of times and it was an incredible experience! Great guy. -
Sorry to hear that, champ. Hope you're better soon!

There's a kid in my beginner karate class who must have the worlds loudest kiai. It's like a drawn-out scream, rather than a shout. I appreciate his entheusiasm...but my eardrums sure don't!
