  1. I've trained barefoot outside in the snow before (when it was actually snowing, not just when it had snowed). That was part of a training course I went on which was run by a Sensei with a reputation for being 'hard' and 'tough' on the students. Someone (no, not me) foolishly said within earshot of Sensei "oh, well, at least he's not making us train outside today", to which Sensei replied "what a good idea!". Apart from that, I've not really done much 'extreme training'. I've had some long meditation sessions and done a little conditioning training on my shins and the tops of my feet, but nothing like the training that some of the people on here have performed. However, I train enough to be able to perform martial arts to a decent standard. I'll never be a competitor in Pride or UFC, so the training I do is good enough for me.
  2. I'm moving this over to the equipment forum. Personally, I wear adidas or Blitz martial arts shoes.
  3. I went to a Halloween party as a vampire-lady last night. Long black dress, black cloak, black hair, black shoes... anyone spotted the pattern here yet??
  4. Please try and keep this thread on-topic, as it has drifted off and is starting to get a little argumentative. Just to remind people, the posters original question was "what is your way of punching?".
  5. Great pics, Dean! Congratulations to you once again. Quick question - in some of the 'action' category pictures that you posted, some of the others that were there have different coloured edging on their uniforms (sorry, I don't know the KSW equivalent word for 'gi'! ). Does the different colour refer to what grade that person is, or is it just a matter of personal preferance? Thanks.
  6. ...and you lived to tell the tale?? That was a very brave thing to do!
  7. Hi! Welcome to Karate Forums.

  9. Hi there! Welcome to Karate Forums.
  10. Wow, that's got to be the worlds best ever session of "keepy-uppy"!! Thanks for sharing it.
  11. Congratulations on the sucess of KF, Patrick! Long may it continue!!
  12. Hi Nicolas! A belated welcome to you to Karate Forums!
  13. 1st Dan in Shotokan Karate. 5th Kyu (2nd grade) in Aikikai Aikido. Currently working on 1st form in Wing Chun. I've also trained in Kobudo, FSD (my karate instructors own system) and Goju. I love the martial arts and I'm always open to trying new things and new arts. I'd like to train in the Filipino MA's at some point, as well as adding Kendo to my MA arsenal. Tai Chi/Taijiquan also appeals to me, but finding an instructor in my area who actually teaches it as a martial art is like finding hens teeth...
  14. It certainly was a lot of bad luck in one day!
  15. Well, keep it rested and strapped up. Hope it gets better soon!
  16. Do many MA schools in the USA charge on a per-lesson basis, or are the majority the 'pay monthly' type? Here in the UK MA schools that charge on a month by month basis are in the minority. It is usually only the very large clubs that have dedicated MA premises that charge monthly fees. Most other clubs charge per lesson. For karate, kobudo and FSD I pay £3 (about US$5.50) per 2 hour lesson, although my instructor doesn't usually charge me these days, as I teach beginner classes for him. For Wing Chun I pay £7 (about US$13.50) per 90 minute lesson. In my area kung fu/Chinese MA styles tend to be the highest charging, with karate and kickboxing schools the least expensive.
  17. Good luck with your yellow gear, if you get it! Let us know how you go on at competition wearing it...
  18. For a UK supplier try Playwell I know that they sell Adidas equipment - they might have that gi, or be able to get it for you. I've ordered from Playwell before and they're an excellent company with very quick service. Try also: Paragon MA Supplies Combat Gear Karate Kid Cracked Finger UK
  19. Well, that's a new one to me... all these years I thought that "BAR" was a place one went to for alcoholic drinks...
  20. Is Shukokai karate linked to Tenshinkan karate? I'd heard that the two are similar.
  21. I am ungraded in Goju, although I have trained a little in it, as well as my Shotokan training. My Shotokan Sensei is a 4th Dan in Okinawan Goju.
  22. Sorry if this has been answered before in another thread. However, as all the kenpo/kempo threads are now in one place it may be useful to bring this question up again. Can anyone explain to me why some people call their art keNpo and others call it keMpo? Is it to do with lineage, differeces in techniques, location or something else? Or is it simply due to a difference in spelling (much like American English and British English ), with the actual systems of kenpo and kempo being the same? Thanks!
  23. Families are great, aren't they? Well, most of the time... When I was a teenager I entered a lot of horsetrials and showjumping competitions. I once entered this rather large showjumping competition, but the horse I was riding can only be described as being "completely and utterly insane" (much like the rider ). Well, me and this hose had more problems going round that showjumping course than a little. We finished in last place in the competition, with what seemed like ten thousand penalty points. Still, my family came rushing up to me afterwards and told me how great I'd been and that they were all really proud of me. So, no 6ft trophy for me on that day, but I had the love of my family, which is more important than any trophy in the world.
  24. Anything by Terry Pratchett...
