  1. I used to keep a notebook when I first started MA, but I've fallen out of the habit. I really ought to get back into it as it is a very useful thing to have. My early noted from classes were invaluable to me. A new resolution for me - to start my note-taking again.
  2. Hi Saotome! Welcome to Karate Forums. Good to have you aboard.
  3. I've only bowed once in error outside the dojo (it was when I was entering the Post Office for some reason...) but I have said Osu and Hai to people before. I'm sure you all know about the funny looks you get when that happens. I've got my bowing mixed up before, though. I've been known to bow and say Osu in Wing Chun and Tai Chi before, and I've also done the clapsed hands gesture from Chinese MA in Karate class too.
  4. I knew that anyway, but it is an interesting bit of research. I raed it preefclty teh frist tmie...
  5. In Karate class I'm usually thinking when Sensei is talking "this is gonna hurt" because he usually gives a little speech/lecture before a demonstration. As I'm usually the dojo "Demonstration Dummy" I get 'beaten up' pretty much every other day. lol
  6. Your instructor is watching you pound the heavy bag... so you add in a little extra effort. You attempt a roundhouse kick.. and end up on your butt underneath the bag... Yes, that one actually happened to me, as did the next one. You kneel in seiza at the start of a grading. As you get up, you catch your foot in your gi bottoms and end up tearing them... in an embarassing place... Double !
  7. I'd suggest going back to your doctor and explaining your situation fully to him. He's the best person to help you. Good luck with your knee problem! I have dodgy right knee which often makes MA training painful or just plain uncomfortable. I'm sure that my knee porblem wouldn't have been as bad had I gone to a doctor when I injured it sooner rather than later.
  8. I use mine to practice kata with.
  9. Yes, my sensei is always telling students to keep a straight back. He tells the kids to make sure that they move "belly first" - that way their back will be in line and not twisted.
  10. I'm not a doctor or a health professional, but I'd say rest whilst your muscles are sore. Better to be safe than sorry.
  11. Great!! Where do I sign up? Sure beats actually training.... I'd probably buy my Sensei one of those certificates from eBay as a joke present... if they wern't so expensive. He'd appreciate the joke, but I ain't spending that much!
  12. I'd say that if you want to study two arts at once then you'd be fine. I train in more than one MA at once. However, you should work up to training so much every day. Suddenly going from nothing (or not a lot of training) to 3+ hours per day won't do you any good. Make sure that you get plety of rest and that yout build up your daily training slowly.
  13. Inosanto, Itosu, Jay, Kase, Oyama, Geesink, any Gracie, Yip Man. Oh and Jackie Chan, 'cos he looks like a fun guy to train with.
  14. Both! I support the decidedly awful Rotherham at rugby and the just-as-equally-awful Sheffield Wednesday at football. I like both League and Union, but if pressed I'd say Union was my favourite out of the two. I hardly ever get to go to footie games, though, as I'm usually teaching karate on a Saturday afternoon. Plus, parking is so bad round Hillsborough that I have to leave my car somewhere like Manchester. On the subject of annoying songs, I seem to have gotten rid of all my "earworms" lately. It's amazing what a good dose of Irom Maiden will do...
  15. I'd say that you'd be OK to train in Shotokan and in MT at the same time. Shotokan is a great style to have as a base art and to build tother things on. My Karate Sensei teaches Shotokan-based karate, but incorporates other MAs and styles of karate that he's learned in his 30+ years of training. Good luck with your training osuperu!
  16. Excluding training at home, I'd say that a good minimum would be training with your instructor 2x 2 hour sessions in the dojo/dojang/gym per week.
  17. I'm going to move this over to the Sport MA forum.
  18. Nah, that wasn't me. I'm a Queen fan, but not obsessive. I save being obsessive for Martial Arts and Doctor Who.
  19. I like all of the bands on that list, but I chose "Other" because I'm a big fan of Queen.
  20. Good luck, goju-dave. Carl Yes, good luck goju-dave for your forthcoming Shodan test.
  21. Very true. If I'm stood in a long queue, being bored, I'll practice arem techniques, or maybe run through the foot movements of a particular kata. Or even just run through kata sequence in my head. I often get some funny looks when I use techiques whilst out and about (shuto to open doors, anyone?? ) but I once did a technique whilst out in public and got a big grin from a security guard in a shop. It turned out he trained in Chinto Ryu and would often practice 'on the job' in dull moments.
