  1. You brought Up Koreans. I simply wanted to know why the Koreans I asked seemed hostile to the question. Actually, I did, it's in Busan. Thye alsow have the WTF HQ in Seoul, doesn't Mean TKD is Korean in it's liniage. Now I have again done a few hours of research today. I still cannot find a third party resource to corroberate the claims made by GM Suh. Can you or can you not point me to a resource that supports his Claims? Now Today I correspondence with a guy who did study KSW. He tells me that it was a mixture of HKD with mantis style Kung FU. He also told me that he was not allowed to study any other Marital art and while doing KSW. I told him I bet that was a school policy, and he claimed it was the same in all California. That was really odd. Is that true? Another person I spoke to supports this, claiming Suh combined mantis style with HKD. Of course niether of these guys could support their claims either. What comments can you make on their assesment of the style? And do you have any thierd party resources I can look up? It would be nice.
  2. Sounds like you did your homework as best as any parent can. Sounds fine. Glad to see a parent take a real interest. I see so many kids whoes parents just drop thier kids at class and come back to pick them up.
  3. You didn't answer any of my questions. Why do other Koreans I have spoken to have a low regard for KSW? Particularly, why do TKD seem to have a distain for it? Is there some feud? I fhtere were school near me, I'd love to go, But there's not. All I have said is that the only person who claim KSW is taken from the older arts is Suh himself. Is there any refenence you know of that coraberates his claims? So far each one I find says "Suh said he learned..." Sorry if I am a little skeptical.
  4. I do TSD and TKD and I accpet the fact their liniage is from Shotokan. Interesting you bring up Koreans, because so far all the ones I have spoken to have very little regard of KSW. I am honestly asking, why is that? I found it odd. But they were all TKD guys. Is there some feud there? I wasn't shouting, mearly discussing as I try to some facts. I am sorry if false infomation, or unsubstatiated claims tend to make me Grumpy. I love it how we have a discussion forum, yet everytime my opinions go against the status quoe here, someone accuses me of having attitude, or locks the thread. Some discusion O NO don't tell anyone that Korean MA has Japanese liniage
  5. As far a value for your dolar, amount of lessons, time in class cost per month, addiotnal fees, you don't need to know MA to know you're getting a good deal. From what you say it souds like you are. I always suggest looking into the instuctors history, where he learned, call his/her teacher. Find out if thye parted on good terms. Find out who his teacher was. An honest instructor should not find these questions offensive. Degrees on belts are shady these days. Espcially when you see guys under 30 who claim they are 4th and 5th dans. How old is this instructor? If you really are suspicious, or just want to know, check his criminal record. On another board we were discussing a school, and one guy discovered the instuctor in question was wanted in another state for stalking a student and burning his studio down to collect insurance. May I ask, was it just the Kung Fu guy who got you questioning, or are there other things that prompted you to question as well?
  6. The koreans claim that TKD and HKD are thiers, why should they not include KSW? Seriously, I am trying to find something to support you, But the only person claiming the art is older is Suh himself. Just like the TKD Grandmasters tried.
  7. I think you need to investigate any intructor. Yes, the Kung Fu teacher may be trying to get a student. At the same time perhaps he is saying that the Kenpo guy does not have valid credentials. Before I go on, I am not bashing Kenpo. But I will say that people with Dubious ranks, awards and offiliations, tend to claim "Kenpo" is thier style. If you look in Magazines and online, many "learn at home, get your black belt, become cetified with joe blow" ads associate themselves with Kenpo. I am not saying that kenpo is bad. I am saying for some reason many martial con artist claim they are Kenpo. Ask youself this, of any school: Check the instructors credentials. Check his background!!!! What kind of contracts does he make you sign? How many classes a week can you/child attend a week? what are the testing fees, uniform fees, other hidden costs? Do you feel like your just another check writter? Does the school seem "cult like"? As with anything you get your kids into, do some reasearch.
  8. Please don't listen to TKD BBs unless they are over 40.
  9. There is no one style is used by the US special Forces.
  10. taekyon is dead and has been for at least 100 years. TKD is only 60 years old if that. TKD was not practiced until the 20th century and is a direct off shoot from shotokan karate. There is an excellent article in The Journal of Asain Martial Arts. Volume 12~Number 4~2003. "Ancient Military Manuals and Their Relation to Madern Korean Martial Arts" by Manuel E. Adrongue. N\The article is well researched, cited, and most important to your reasearch, has a two page bibliography.
  11. TSD is much more practicle than TKD. They are simlar, but TSD stayed more traditional as TKD went more sport.
  12. Obviously, you read into KSW with a closed mind, not willing to accept the possiblility that you didn't know as much as you thought you did. Why would you say KSW is "under the same influences as the rest", without giving a reason? Have you even seen it? Do you understand what is meant by "indigenous"? Do you know what those ancient techniques looked like? In fact, how do I know you even have enough martial arts skill and knowlegde to be even judging the merits of a particular style? See, the doubting game is very easy to play. Have a nice day! And you sound just like every other KSW cult member. You are so close minded you only believe what your master tells you. You do not go outside your organziation to look for alternate histories. Fact is KSW is no older than 1958.
  13. If you're only a yellow belt, you haven't given the art much of a chance. Any martial art is going to take some time to become proficent.
  14. I took some time to look up KSW. So far all I can find it as a fact is it was formed in 1958. I find no conclusiove evidence that they style is any older. Learning from "some secret" monk is not evidence. Particularly when we're discussing a time when the Korean people were trying to rid the contry of all things japanese. Is it unique for korean styles, Yes I think so. But I still think it was under tha same influences as the rest.
  15. MDK/ TSD still do the pyogn forms and the advanced forms mentioned.
  16. May I ask why you find Karate not practicle? I ask because I find most katate schools tend to find a good balnce between art and practicle. Chinnese styles tend to be really good. But I notice that like Aikido, it takes a very long time for student to learn the practicle appliactions. BJJ is good, but recently I have had conversation regarding one flaw in it's philosphy. "all fights go to ground". I am not saying this isn't true more often than not, but there is an inherant advantage to taking someone to the ground without going down with them. If you're really into ground fighting, check out Judo. Check this place out too. http://www.onespiritmartialarts.com/ I haven't heard anything bad about them. They teach several different arts, including Judo, BJJ, and MMA fighting.
  17. Ok, taken. As best as I can tell, Asian Martial as they are practiced today flow from China to Okinawa. The Japanese picked up Karate During thier Occupation and eventual annexation of Okinawa. Karate was then introduced to the Koreans and transformed there.
  18. I have found the same information in my studies as well. Most researched information indicates that unarmed MA in Korea dies out as weapons became the fashion. This coupled with the occupation pretty much killed korean unarmed MA. Korean MA today is directly decended from Akijujitsu and Karatedo (which was stolen from okinawa).
  19. For competition and testing get 100% cotton. Yes Tokido's are great but pricey. Century's are terrible!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just bought a Pinetree. I like it a lot. http://www.tkdpinetree.com/ I don't like proforce light and medium weight uniforms, so I don't really look at the heavy weights. Heavy uniforms tend to be cut larger than the light ones. Cotton will shrink, so I am of the opinoin to buy larger and have the uniform tailored to you.
  20. Two periodicals: The Journal of Asian Martial Arts. Classical Fighting Arts. Both are quarterly with well researched and cited articles.
  21. OXY CLEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I should do an ad for it. My uniforms are as white as when I bought them. I recently got a flat tire coming home from class, I had to change the tire, my Gi pants were blackend in some areas. Oxy clean totally made the uniform brand new white again!
  22. I find, in gerneral, If the striker keeps the opponet away, the stiker wins. If the grappler gets in, the grappler wins.
  23. Spooky, I have no idea, very time I see people do breaking they go to Home depot. I really can't imagine there would be much difference, unless the HD pine is chemicaly treated
  24. I am a little upset that my post was deleted. I didn't use any language that wasn't already in the thread ( and is still in the thread). I hope my post wasn't deleted for personal reasons. At the risk of upsetting people, here it is again "I personaly feel all underbelts should wear white. I do not discriminate against schools that wear other colors. Solid color unforms do not strike me as a red flag, or an indicator that the school is bad. I do find that schools that wear "demo" uniforms (mulitcolored freak outfits) tend to be all flash, not solid foundation. While demo uniforms have their place, I do not feel it' sin the training hall. I would like to add the the only TKD near me that has bad students (both in skill and attitude) has students in white. This is a good lead in for my next point. The school I just mentions has a very skilled " Grand Master" ( I put that in qoutes because I have heard of many Koreans getting off the plane as GMs). I have seen this guy work, he is really great. His students suck and have nasty arrogant atitudes. A guy can be a great Martial artist and a bad person, or a bad teacher. To bashing "media whores" It's ok to Bash Media whores. Just respect thier ablities. One can argue Bruce Lee was a media *. I will still look up to him. I don't Doubt Gen. Chois ablities, while I can be critical of his cliams and his choices in life, I have no doubt he was a great Martial Artist. Jean claud Van dam, He's a media *. And from what many people who have met him, he's not a very nice guy. He also got beat up in a strip club but a former body guard. The guy I mentioned above is a great TKD guy...he appears to be a bad teacher. Jhoon Rhee...not a media *. He marketed TKD, not Himself. " Please if you're going to delete this at least tell me the exact words that are offensive so I can post better in the future Thanks.
  25. I hate associations. Look, does the sensi feel the same as this association? Sounds like no from what you have said. You earned your DAN, and sounds to me like your skills can back you up. So learn a weapon. I had to do the same when they decided to requier it too. If they cannot tell from your skills that you are a dan ( or close to it by what ever standards) than find another school that doesn't have a bunch of political/beurucratic Bull*!#$ You earned your rank, Keep it.
