  2. I just thought I'd throw this around. Most MA if not all MA were combat oriented. I am reminded by a well respected MA instructor in that he quoted "The first objective in Martial arts is to kill; only alternative is to maim" With that being said, any art can be put into context of combat, be it JKD or be it Aikido. I feel that it comes down to how you train which is probably the more important thing. It comes down to what situations or factors you address in your training. As it usually is said, you train the way you fight. With that being said, yes I believe I'm learning how to fight because that's top priority that my friend and I focus on. He and his group have believed first in self defense. Personally after experiencing it myself and I still do to this day, I dont' think of JKD as just mere philosophy. Yes there is philosophy but it doesn't form the big picture. Alongside this philosophy are principles that JKD is structured around. Alongside the structure of principles, there are actual JKD techniques that are outward expressions of these philosophies and or principles. We train with full energy and spar with full contact. Again the goal of my friend's and my training is to apply as much bodily force with the utmost efficiency. Again train the way you fight. Again as I brought up most if not all Martial Arts were combative in orientation. It's just that some made it sport.
  3. yeah working out with a guy that trains in redlands. He's been busy as of late and i have been training with a friend of mine that i've known for since childhood so as ot prepare for the time i meet up with the primary guy. But wouldn't mind other training partners during other days of the week. I"m still young in JKD (roughly on and off for about four to six months).
  4. wow ! I just live in the paradise hills / national city / chula vista area vicinity.. mainly paradise hills but I could easily get to chula vista or national city (which is just "right there" )
  5. hey warlock .. what area of SD are you from? I'm not sure if i asked you before or not. Hope to hear from you soon. btw SD I mean San Diego , if you meant something else then I apologize
  6. there's not much different as far as overall goals wanted to be achieved by practitioners. there is a way to do things though. e mail me and i'll be more in depth
  7. what else do you want to know about it ? I'll be willing to share more info when you're more clear on what you want known
  8. JKD is soo simple .yet takes a lifetime. as far as schools ... https://www.jkdwednite.com https://www.chriskentjkd.org https://www.jkdextreme.com https://www.jkd.com.hk these are only a few of MANY
  9. what part of san diego.. i'm southbay .. by the border of mexico (15 min)
  10. I'm with you on that seven star.
  11. I would personally take those results with a grain of salt. .especially since it was mainly a documentary about matt mullins
  12. by anti grappling i mean trying to prevent a take down.. not necessarily just striking. Could also be evasive tactics. .i'm not disputing the necessity of learning how to grapple or lock.. just saying that preventing from being taken down should be trained. .and I mean trained hard and well.
  13. hey blh.. what part of norcal (you are referring to northern california right?) ? seems like you could help shotokan warrior in this instance. i do recall seeing some sacramento instructors somewhere but i 'll have to double check
  14. anti grappling should be a part of anyone's curriculum. like everyone said it's easier said than done. But if you are taken to the ground, be prepared for that situation.... train the way you fight.
  15. first of all good luck on the paper Name: Lester San Jose Age 22 Location : San Diego, CA Disciplines - Wushu Kung Fu, Aikido, currently Jeet Kune Do I guess it would have to do with the karate kid movies, the early bruce lee exposure yet I was too young to fully comprehend what i was trying to get into. I think at the time I was really into far eastern culture as well. There was something to the martial arts to me at least that lent itself farther than basketball or any other recreational sport that i've come across; at the time it was something I couldn't put my finger on. Started wushu finally at the age of 9 or 10 i believe. I couldn't believe I actually was doing some sort of martial art, especially since my parents weren't that high on me doing it at that point in my life. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience there. Unfortunately the teachers that taught it left and the class was replaced by a choy li fut style. After a long break from formal training, I was still interested in Martial arts. I eventually came across the Tao of JKD twice, one through a friend and another when my sister bought it for me as a birthday gift. i decided at that point that i 'd take up JKD. Then when i was in high school I saw an issue of bruce lee magazine, upon reading it honestly i'd say i was hooked obtaining issue after issue. It was also realized that through reading it and being as old as i was at the time (16 or so) I learned there was another element to the martial arts.. the philosophical aspect. Upon leaving high school i was still determined to take up martial arts.. My motives were different from the last time i went (well it should have been since i started at 9 and at the time of trying to re enter 16; being more mature and all), i decided to finally try and use the MA as a tool of self discovery. In college i then found an aikido class since it had a lot of yin yang influence as well as JKD. Very interesting to say the least, I learned a lot in that three month span. To make a long story short (sorry for the lengthiness), I finally took up JKD after talking with a long time JKD elder under dan inosanto on the phone i was able to talk to one of his students and have been training since then. Also it was through training in actual JKD that I was able to clear any misconceptions i might have had about the art in the first place. Each day I learn more about myself becau7se of martial arts. if you have any questions or request some clarity in my words don't be afraid to drop aline at my email or IM (i should have it there in the profile) I hope this serves of good help and i wish you again on the best of luck for the paper.. with the insight provided by all of us it should be a great paper till then take it easy Les

  17. you know what documentary i thought was very good? the secret to the warriors power.. it had a good thorough explanation of kung fu history as well as showcasing some of the monks. well produced IMO
  18. if it's there .. then take it.. if not take what is closest to you .. usually it's a knee cap..
  19. I saw that show.. what a misleading thing .XMA stood for mike chat's stuff.. but a bit of others..but basically about a guy who wanted a comeback.. if they wanted a better educational or scientific presentation .. would have picked out boxers, something more on the lines of understanding efficiency .. it is after all the discovery channel
  20. what part of california are you at? I might be able to help you with some contacts and stuff. .and if you're near me i could probably arrange for you to train with the guys i train with.
  21. there are some things you have to consider: the necessity of attracting students or other means of income via the ma industry. Making videos, doing seminars, doing privates on top of group classes. Just be aware of what might happen.. Just don't do it to the point where the Ma COULD be a chore.
  22. i take it you enjoyed getting your feet wet in JKD ?
  23. it's all up to the individual.. the art doesn't make the man..
  24. whenever i can.. my garage has emptied out a bit for some space that i could use for training .. but usually once a week with my friend that teaches me JKD .
