Training in Japan?
Practice is the key _ replied to youngmanquan's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Yeah what really attracts you to trainning in japan anywhere? -
'Empty hand' doesn't always mean literally empty - it is supposed to signify the clearing of the mind and body in preperation for training. It also signifies 'empty of any evil intent'. There are many karate clubs that incorporate weapons training, especially traditional Okinawan style clubs. However, a lot of clubs do borrow weapons and aspects from other styles too. For example, there are Shotokan clubs that train with kobudo weaponary, even though Shotokan is not a traditional weapons-based system. As for the grapplig, there is a lot of that in karate. It just depends on your instructor as to how much you do. Karate isn't just about kicking and punching, but sometimes the other aspects of it have to be 'looked for'. Your right every art is not complete.

How many people in the UK do karate?
Practice is the key _ replied to Practice is the key _'s topic in Karate
Very scared... of the fact that some poor kid is gonna grow up thinking they're a competent martial artist just because someone decided they could have a black belt at age 5 or 6. I think that a child should be AT LEAST 10 before they're even considered for a black belt. You said it all yeah actually 5 years old black belt does not understand alot, a child should atleast be about 9-10 to get a black belt. I'd agree. -

"I am told in our style of Kumite competitions that blind kicks are not allowed. On the surface this seems pretty clear what you can and can't do. If you don't see the kick landing it is blind, but: I want to add some spinning kicks to my moves just as a surprise I can use on occasion. I have consulted some of my Sensai's about the spinning hook back kick. They say it is ok as long as I see it landing, but I am wondering if I use it in a competition if they may think I cannot see it land and get disqualified?" Well like me am not allowed to use any spinning kick machine gun punch axe kicked my sensei said when you grade to brown belt you are allow so am waiting about 1 and a half years time. Is anyone here bound by this rule and do you have any experience with ruling on using these kicks? _________________

Hi! I am a 1st degree black belt (Cho Dan) in Tang Soo Do (WTSDA), who will be testing in the next few months for my 2nd degree. I really enjoy Tang Soo Do. I never thought that I'd enjoy martial arts so much - I was always the last kid picked in gym class. I also enjoy the KF - I think that it's wonderful! I also love the movie Kung Pow - so funny! Can't wait until there's a sequel. ________________"Welcome make youself comfy ^_^. -

I taught my dog how to spar. He is pretty good at it, too. Smart pooch. Now he tries to spar with the cat LOL. Anyways, I like anything from classic rock, metal, to alternative metal. Really that is funny and kinda cute though. -
Hi, well, as it says, I've done Shotokan (1st kyu), Muay Thai, Krav Maga, and Jujitsu. Shotokan I enjoy, and had an amazing teacher, who set me on the path of martial arts. My biggest problem is the semi-contact kumite - it's just too difficult, and unrealistic, and not my thing. Also there was not enough close range work - there's some elbow use, but no knees, and no locks, or grappling. Muay Thai is just too damaging to yourself - training does not need to be really easy, but should not be as hard as it is (for me). But, it does allow you to feel what it's like to be hit, and to hit, and to know that when you're sparring, that you may take a hit, but then unleash a more powerful attack against your opponent, which more than counteracts. Krav Maga is good, but even though has locks in, not much emphasis was placed on them, and the instruction I received was not all that hot. They also did not include grappling, which considering the nature of the art seems odd. Finally, to my most recent art - jujitsu - love it - my teacher is inspirational, about the same size as me, and teaches the most well rounded method of fighting I have ever come across. We cover strikes (punching, kicking, elbowing, kneeing, etc), locks, and grappling. All this in addition to learning how to effectively change range - learning to kick, and grapple boxers, punch and grapple kickers, and generally fight the way your opponont does not want to. It's awesome! Anyway, that's me - an empty cup to fill with more knowledge, and application Little fonts but effective. Hi there welcome kochinawa kato omitaya/

Kurosawa is awesome! Hope you liked Rashomon. You guys should all see it. Brilliant movie. And yes, you'll love Yojimbo and it's sequel - Sanjuro. I also recommend Ran, which has the best photographed battle scene I've ever seen, and is a splendid movie all throughout. There's also The Hidden Fortress - which was a major inspiration source for Star Wars. Other great movies of his that I've seen are Ikiru and Red Beard (no fights though, be advised well, almost no fights) I hear good things about Kagemusha and Dersu Uzala, but haven't had a chance to see them. In truth, I'd watch any Kurosawa movies I can get my hands on, if I were you. They've started stocking some of them at video stores, since new DVD's have been coming out on Criterion Collection. Just look around through foreign movies section. And they're (almost) all on amazon.com Are you sure about That? -
Have no way as way, no limitations as limitation". Bruce Lee created Jeet Kune Do to emphasize using what works. Not mixing every style and every thing. He used what works. The same applied to fighting. You want to use exactally what will work best and only that. After all, "...you must be like water". OKINAWIANS were doing that for years, many of the styles were pieces of many other systems. The things that worked best for the creator. The problem is what worked for the creator may not work ofr others , hence " make the art your own " or " learn to apply the art now that you know the techniques" "Lee said that JKD is not about accumulating, but about stripping away the excess." And when you srtip away excess and keep what works and move from fighting system to fighting system are you not accumulating. He trained very hard , never really learning any one style and died before we could really know what he was able to accomplish. In JKD circles that Bruce Lee is respected , however not held in the same god like view many folks do. Perhaps it is because many others took the concepts and put many more years into appling them than Bruce ever did. I'd really agree on this.

They say it because they are ignorant. It is sometimes better to dodge an attack, sometimes it is not an option, for instance if you are backed into a corner. Blocks are useful if you dont have time or room to dodge. They are also helpful if you want to block and throw, block and counterattack. What people say and what people mean are often two very different things. What they say: Blocking is useless on the street What they mean: I'm much too slow to block even the simplest attack from an untrained fighter. COME ON Everyone knows street fighters 1. Get Mad 2. Throw the Wild Right Cross 3. Throw The left hook, right cross 4. If that doesn't work they go for the tackle If you know whats coming, then you should prepare to defend against it Tottallyn right on!!!
