Plyometrics (sp?) is what you are doing, it builds lean hard muscle, for a visual, look at any Bruce Lee photo as he was a great proponent of this.

A backspinning wheel kick where the back of the knee caught the guy in the neck and slammed him on the mat. I did that during my first brown belt test.

do you do the twisting crunches? that is what hits the latissimus dorsi, i believe that is what you want to work, also, doing standing twists with a bo staff or weight bar across your shoulders might help. -

I did a search on: "The Frantics, Tae kwon leap" and I found scripts and an mp3 to listen to as it has been a long time for me too, still makes me laugh! -

While all of the points above are excellent in their own merits we might want to look at this in another way. Way back in history (pre-WWII days) the number of practicing martial artists was probably onehundredfold less than today. There were few, if any sanctioning bodies as there are today. So all anyone needed to know was who had a teaching license in their area, and there were bound to be few of them. Now flash forward with me to today. Look in your local phone book and see how many Dojos are listed. Now realize that many phone books have similar amounts of these Dojo listed. Many of these schools belong to associations, associations use a chain of command to serve their members as you can't expect the president of an association to do all of the work, so other (junior) members assist the president. In the case of an international organization there may need to be people in continental, national, region, state, area, and maybe even city levels repesenting an association. The people in the association need to be recognized not only by the title of their position but by something indicating their experience, like educational degrees or military rank. So now we have a use and reason for the degree system to exist. Here is another view, if you are in school and earn your diploma, what do you do after you get the sheepskin? You leave. This is like the karate black belt and the need that many people feel to be recognized for every thing that they do. You are a school owner who doesn't want to lose students after getting their black belt (graduation), so you add belt degrees, now people get their pats on the back and you as an owner get to collect tidy sums for testing, but here is the problem, as the instructor you can't promote anyone higher than you so what to do? Turn yourself into a 10th dan! Yeah! that's the ticket! So there you have it, a couple of theories on the development and use of the black belt degrees. if anyone has more thoughts on this I'd love to read them

Instructors !!!! I got a quarstion
CloudDragon replied to Smith amp Wesson's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I hate it when I'm sleepkataing and reverse punch my dresser mirror, how annoying!!!! Hey Smith, my suggestion to you is to find another instructor. However an instructor explained it to me like this when I had a problem similar to yours. He said: "During class I teach, and the students learn, practice time is at home or after class. Why should I ask my students to rent floor space from me to practice when they can find that on their own. They come to me to learn, and I would be cheating them by filling the class with repitition." I was able to study under this instructor for several months and he wasn't lying, the big advantage to this style of teaching is that I learned to pay close attention and practice as soon as I got home from class. Hope this puts a different light on your situation. -
Dropped By a 5 year old!!!!!
CloudDragon replied to Ryukyu1's topic in Instructors and School Owners
just a thought here, why was the instructor letting the students line up and hit him in the first place? Maybe I'm way off base here, but I don't want 5 year olds in my school thinking that its ok to hit me as the instructor. That kind of thing will come around and kick you in the butt. Kinda like what happened here. -
don't know if this is still done, but a few years ago it was popular to abuse the black belt until it looked old, I always thought it was funny when a 18 yr. old black belt was walking around with a belt so worn, torn and faded it looked older than they were!!!

Do instructors pay for classes?
CloudDragon replied to koreantiger81's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I was in a situation where I had to pay tuition as an assistant inst. . What made it tolerable was that I taught the first class and was a student at the second, so I was still learning and had the teaching experinence. However, if you don't have that time to be the student I feel that you shouldn't have to pay to help someone. -
Whatever you do, don't put the word "extreme" anywhere in the name, everything from sports to dental floss is being labled "EXTREME!!!"
