  5. Differnent shopping networks. Mr. Mike in the first one the guy was fooling around with a "practice" katana banging it on a wooden table and it bounced up and hit him in the side up under the rib cage. In the second one the demonstrater fell off an extending ladder.
  6. Since I started the thread I should probably say my other interests are pets, reading groups and my veterans group. I also make knotted cord rosaries.
  7. It is really better to learn from an instructor. I have seen some kobudo katas described that leave a lot to be desired. There is nothing that beats a bit of hands on demonstration and in person critique of technique.
  8. Take a good look at their student creed and note that it is a part of the testing requirement at every rank.
  9. You will see the attrition all thoughout your training. After the initial dropping out in the first or second ranks I think the biggest attrition occured about 5th kyu then again at the 1st and 2nd kyu levels.
  10. Taking some time off or modifying your training might be beneficial at this time.
  11. That is a really good example thanks for sharing that.
  12. And maybe you trust him more not to kill you in the process of sparring. I find when learning to spar one makes the most progress when paired with someone they trust and have confidence in.

  15. Other than martial arts what are your other intersts and pastimes?
  16. Sounds like you learned something in the process. I think having multiple interests is good for a person in that it makes one more will rounded. And it is not that uncommon for a martial artist to have an artistic nature.
  17. Glad to hear it went well for you.
  18. I am going to move this to the weapons area.
  19. We did. It is part of the responsiblity of upper belts to learn and exercise control when sparring with younger, or lower ranked students.
  20. Some pruning of this topic did occur. Please remember to make all posts in a respectful manner. And that includes referring to a particular style or school in a derogatory manner.
  21. Congratulations to you both. Y2_sub even in the same style such as shotokan belt levels and colors can vary from club to club.
  22. It is not uncommon to have one leg that is stronger at certain kicks than the other side. Most styles I have seen routinely practice all techniques from both sides of the body to help try and correct this. When you practice on your own try starting with the weaker side first and give it time to gain strenght.
  23. I loved the article. Are you doing a follow up on martial arts for the 50ish crowd?
  24. When you catch someone moving backwards with a solid kick or punch their momentum can be amplified by your kick. They back up real quick - way faster than they meant to back up.
