Christians and the Martial Arts
shanemm replied to kchenault's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
People who complain about bowing, meditation, etc. in martial arts I think of the same way I think of people who protest movies...don't you have something better to do ? Seriously, you don't see people protesting horror books or films with spirits and ghosts in them but people will waiste their time going out and protesting a kid's film (Harry Potter) or martial arts that teach respect and gentleness in living as well as to defend yourself if you absolutely have to...please . Great article and here's a part of another article on Judo etiquette from judoinfo.com: Bowing Through very specific customs an orderly, functional and efficient method of conduct has been laid down for use in all Dojo. One of the very first items of etiquette which the Deshi (student) must learn is when they enter or leave any Dojo, they must perform a Ritsu Rei (standing bow) in and out of the Dojo. This Rei is not just a physical thing to do, but is also mentally done. By this I mean that when entering the Dojo each Deshi (student) clears his or her mind of all evil and negative thoughts, and feels good about themselves with the good thoughts in mind to be a better person for what they are about to learn, or what they have learned at the Dojo before leaving. The second time that they are required to Rei is when they are about to enter or leave the mat area. Also at this time their minds should be clean and fresh with desire to learn and to become at ease with themselves. The third time they Rei is before and after working out with a partner. This is done with much respect as you are asking your training partner for the pleasure of working out with you, also you are saying I come with a clean mind, and have no intention of hurting you; in the event I or you should suffer injury, no ill feelings shall exist between us. I don't think Christianity and Tai Kwon Do (as well as Judo in my case) counter eachother's beliefs. On the contrary I think they compliment eachother nicely both teaching respect and kindness over violence but still being able to defend yourself if need be. Once again great and very true article! -
Judo with tall people.

oh yeah good point simon...i'm not saying you shouldn't or don't have to work out i'm just saying that technique is more important than strength. -

it's not about strength...it's about where you hit them to throw off their balance, where you lift from, or where your hand is around their head. sure you might be able to get a few people down with pure strength but most people will just throw you easier. do everything the correct way...no matter how long it takes or how much you don't like it. don't go for speed and power, accuracy is #1. good luck -

if you were just practicing one set throw then he probaly was just being a jerk . or if you weren't you might not have tried to get as low as you could to throw him. or it could have just been a bad day and you weren't focussed?... or he could have been wearing a lead gi... of corse unless he was super strong he would be on the floor withing 3 min of practicing throws ... -

Tackle/Two leg takedown

Sun Tzu said: In the practical art of war, the best thing of all is to take the enemy's country whole and intact; to shatter and destroy it is not so good. So, too, it is better to recapture an army entire than to destroy it, to capture a regiment, a detachment or a company entire than to destroy them. applying that to this situation the best thing for you to do would be to choke him out or joint lock him until someone comes to help you. if you fight him with kicks and punches he might be desperate enough to pull a weapon but if you choke or joint lock him it's to late for him to pull one. on the stupid...i mean legal ...side of things the jerk might hire a lawyer and sue you if you punch and kick him , then it's his word and bruises vs. your word and...no bruises. when he has your legs turn your body and drop a leg to the ground then force his neck onto your leg and choke him out. or you can get over his body a little more and put your arms around and under his then lift up while sitting on his head. of corse the best way to defeat him is not to fight him but i guess if micheal johnson wants to pick a fight with you there's nothing you can do but hand his butt to him... . -

judo vs boxing
shanemm replied to sansoouser's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
but here's the thing...the judoka only needs one throw and then the boxer is out where the boxer (unless ungodly strong) will need several good punches to knock-out the judoka. and boxers don't usually punch defensively (they always rotate their shoulders when they punch) so the judoka has an even easier time throwing the boxer because the boxer is already in an off balance position. it would be a close fight though cause the judoka would get beat up severely getting into throw the boxer and the boxer would beat severely beat up (if not something broken) from a well executed throw. the way i see it the boxer will win if he just moves and doesn't go for knock-out punches as much as quick punches, cause once his arm is caught he's gone... -
Devastating throws
shanemm replied to DokterVet's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
I stayed in Judo not only cause of the combat techniques but more for the mental training. Jigoro Kano didn't father Judo totally for tearing the other person's head off on every maneuver...he created it to help people be better people and a better part of the community while being able to defend themselves and also to be in better physical shape. Judoka are sorta like a church youth group members on pcp ...really nice but they can beat you up. I read further and further into the history and teachings of Judo (thanks to JudoInfo.com) and the more I read the more I was interested and sure I made the right choice in choosing a martial art. Judo is the gentle way of fighting AND living. I apply what I've learned from Judo to everyday situations that come up with continued success. -

wow that's a krazy schedule...but i thought Herschel Walker did 500 a day of each from when he was 12? did you guys go to school or have a job? those schedules would be impossible for me in more than 1 way...1 i couldn't do it physically and 2 i wouldn't have enough time to during the school year since i'm in all honors classes and english 10 homework will be at least 1:30 a night(hardest class in the school).

i was lifting with the football team for about 3 months and it got me into good enough condition for soccer and judo. i stopped cause i don't need anymore mass as much as i need to tone all the muscle i got from lifting. and effective technique is to get a deck of cards and flip one card at a time doing that many sit-ups and push-ups as the card you flip over(face cards are 20) and go through the whole deck.

Throws?
shanemm replied to yojimbo's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
my dad (2nd degree dan, while giving a demonstration) accidentally got thrown full force on a wooden stage by his (and now mine also) sensai, he didn't break anything but it made the crowd happy he said . -
the grappling on the ground only takes 2-3 lessons to get down effectively but the throws take a LONG time to get to where it just comes naturaly to Ippon Seoinage someone when they throw a punch. if you don't have someone to practice the throw with then find a support beem in your basement, wrap your belt around it twice, and then practice throwing as if you were really throwing someone.

Help me I'm small.
shanemm replied to Beer-monster's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
since your smaller you don't want to waist any energy on holding the other person as it will only wittle away at your energy (which you don't have a lot of in comparison to the bigger guy). go for a shot and put everything in it, this can either be a choke or a move to get out and up to your feet. you can be dirty too and grab them by their skin(unless your using a judo gi in which case you'll have to grab really deep in ). usually if you can crank on their head they'll tap but don't count on it. -
Judo Question...
shanemm replied to TJS's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
to each his own. i'm happy with learning Judo and a little Tai Kwan Do at the same time and i'd learn more but soccer takes time also(a lot of time cause tryouts for school are coming up). i also understand some people don't learn as fast as i do or some don't even like the idea of different martial arts. it's your life so live it how you want to and learn what you feel like learning, not how someone tells you to... -
Judo effective self defense
shanemm replied to sansoouser's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
a good sensai will teach falling before any throws...and throws are really only dangerous when the person throwing lets go as it allows far more things to happen to the person being thrown than just hitting the ground on your back(a lot of the time). -
Judo
shanemm replied to sansoouser's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
running away is the most effective tactic on the street...but if you really have to fight yes it's very effective against strikes. experience gained though learning to grapple someone is a very handy skill. for example if someone throws a punch at you (considering that this isn't a skilled martial artist) you can just grab their arm and throw them with ippon seoinagi or kata guruma. or if they try and come at you with both hands out to choke or just hold you a decent judoka could throw them with a variation of harai ogoshi. and as stated above if you can get them to the ground a choke or limb lock will be easy to get vs. an inexperienced martial artist. your best bet against a small person is to throw yourself at them and wrestle them to the ground then you should have them easily. while a bigger person you should wait and let them set themselves up for a hip throw or even(if you get really low) a shoulder throw. there are also some hand techniques you can use to effectively convert a punch into a submission move(or at least break their hand if they don't give up). all of the above suggestions are based on Judo lessons(a little Tai Kwan Do thrown in but a lot of Judo). However, in society today weapons are too easy to obtain so always attempt to run away as you don't know what they have in their pocket...
