best book for grappling
shanemm replied to dear john's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
i can't speak for the jujitsu book(although i'm sure it's great because of the author) but Jimmy Pedro's book doesn't go any to deep into ground work. As usual, most of the book is throws and variations with only a small portion devoted to grappling. Grappling is hard to learn through a book, if you can I would try and workout with a college wrestler or team. although i've learned a lot from judo, most of my groundwork comes from wrestling and it's very applicable in real life when there is no gi. -
best techniques to end a fight
shanemm replied to Ryan gry's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
choke is by far the best way to end a fight if you can possibly use it. The most effective way to end a fight would be a simple uppercut with the elbow or poking their eyes out...although i dream of using a flying juji gatame to end a fight, break the knee and the arm in one move. -
JKD is good because it gives you all the techniques in one place. However, if you want to learn what Bruce really wanted people to learn then you could just go to several different kinds of schools. Boxing, mui tai, judo, jujistu, wrestling, TKD, ect. That's basically what JKD is, a blend of some of the techniques from various ma. The advantage of JKD is that you don't have to learn all the stuff that doesn't really work. Plus it seems more for actually defense than a more common ritualistic ma(compared to say TKD, no disrespect to JKD practitioners). So if you can't find a school, you can still learn JKD, just one style at a time.

Bring Pankration back to the Olympics!
shanemm replied to Cross_Trainer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
sounds exactly like UFC to me.... -
You run a 4:20 mile and a chain smoker beat you out in the first few yards? wow, that's really strange...
-
oh I see what you mean...thank you for responding.

pankration hands down...too hardcore for today's athletes. how many times has a ufc fighter won by the shere intimidation? even an ex military martial arts expert would have an extremely hard time matching them(after all a pankrationist only has to work on h-h combat, were as the military guy still needs to shoot and learn more complex battle field tactics as well as new technology). also, life back then started and ended hard for most people, no schools to soften you up, no parents watching to make sure their child doesn't get hurt, ect. sure the technique may be more sound today but just ask judoka what happens when a top level wrestler steps into the ring with them...health wouldn't be a factor as all health care for good athletes was taken care of comparable to today's superstars in football or basketball. height is an advantage for the pankrationist who knows more ways to break your limbs on the ground then prepare an egg. strength advantage would definately be there on the side of today's athlete(a fouty pound rock can't be curled in 1 hand...), but i don't think that it would be so significant as to decide the match. with 2 extremely build guys, their weight won't be as much of a factor. besides all that the modern day fighter would be in for a rude awakening when those soft gloves come off...

i don't really find a need for writing down the techniques...the only thing that i really have in text(other than books) are the tkd forms that i found online. what things do you write in there? and can't you just find a book on it? i don't mean to be incredulous but i don't understand. If you will, post a few examples.

Grappling cross-training
shanemm replied to Cross_Trainer's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
It really depends on how you feel about it. What comes easy for me in judo may not for you as a karate student and visa versa. the biggest differense is that judo is more of a feel than seeing the person do something. for example, a blind man in karate would have a harder time competing with non blind people than he would in judo. this is simply due to the fact that your basically connected to the other guy the whole time. heck, 50% of my ground work i close my eyes without even thinking about it only to open them again when I need to transition. I believe you should just try it out for a session or two and attempt to determine if you could understand both styles at the same time. Of corse you have to get both instructor's permission... -
i know a man who has a medal rod for a key chain. he's a massage(?) theropist, so he knew all the pressure points, and had some ma training also.

you are talking about very awesome weapons but...

when you use weapons your chance of getting in legal trouble is much greater for some reason... -
Wrestling Tips, Anyone?
shanemm replied to youremean's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
arm bars are allowed but if it hurts the opponent the ref stops the action...so if you got a juji don't pull it all the way back or you pretty much start over... my suggestions: -get used to eating less than 1000 calories/day -get up early and run -do different kinds of push ups until your arms fall off -wall squats, one leg squats -every kind of ab exercise you can find technique will come, but being in top shape helps a begginner the best... -

Jimmy Pedro takes bronze!
shanemm replied to SevenStar's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
3rd best is really good for US judoka. judo to japan is like basketball to US...no one beats them(unless are team is filled with a bunch of whining girly girls and a crappy leader like this year). If anyone from the US even gets close to a Judo metal it's fantastic... -

charging at you isn't the problem, it's when your on all fours and the 300 bls person drops on you...yeah say goodbye to your groin unless you can do full splits. -
judoka - please read
shanemm replied to Kane's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
oh i'm sorry, it sounded like a medical problem...yeah rolling wrong can hurt, especially back rolls off an elevated surface. You might consider building more muscle in that area to lessen the blow. Other than lifting, only experience will lessen the pain. -

lol, i just free ball it...anyways real good judo throws are hard to get...trust me. however, my first year i wrestled 30 lbs above wut i weighed in at(at the time i had about 6 months of judo practice). the only thing you should take from judo is suprising them when you can work from your back, other than that osoto will be the only possible pure judo throw. -

High School Wrestling
shanemm replied to dratix's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
the coach should tell you everything you need to know but here's a run down of basic stance in wrestling... when standing in natural position, spread ur feet a step further apart(just one foot steps further). then bend your knees like your doing a squat, but not a 90 degree angle, more like 110 degrees. lean ever so slightly foreward. put your hands out in front of you so your hands are about nose high. this is the basic stance in wrestling. MOVING move foreward and side to side, never crossing your feet and never go backward. in the wrestling stance your already going backward so it's easy to trip you if you back away, always circle. shooting an attack(called a shot usually) is hard to teach through words so i'll just describe an exercise to make shooting easier for you. stand in basic position. step one leg foreward(natural length stride), then lower the other knee to the ground and touch it lightly. then step foreward with the leg that just touch the ground and do it with the other leg. repeat this till your legs fall off and you'll be in good shape(muscular endurance) for the season. when you start don't be afraid to lose, but learn something when(and u will lose trust me) you do. don't go on defense either, always attack attack attack and never let them control the match. good luck -
Judo Finishing Hold
shanemm replied to BJJShotoshe's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
while ur in the hold there are a few things you should be trying to do constantly: -get the arm that he's holding free(just push, pull and wiggle it free) -keep moving your body -slip your head out of his arm there are a few ways to escape: -if you get your arm free bear hug him and aligator roll -if you get your head free hold the arm he had around your head and go for an arm bar by throwing your leg over his head and one under(regular juji) -if he's too far over your body bridge and turn -if he leaves his legs too close to your wrap them up with your legs, then rock toward him, then rock back away from him really fast -you can also grab his belt, stick your knee under his butt, and roll him over you -if he leaves his neck open you can go for a choke that's all i know, feel free to critique or add to my list getting out of kesa is extremely hard for anyone if done correctly. last night i was trying to get out of a new guy's kesa and it took me 30 sec!! that's a full point in a match...good luck! -
