  1. I think one of the best moments I can remember was at a tournament. There was a large group of us watching kata in a particular ring, when this really little kid (maybe 4yo?) came pelting along the side of the rings. However as there was quite a few people walking up and down the pathway, this kid decided to take a shortcut in front of one of the judges. Now, in most of the tournaments I've been to, running through the rings is strictly prohibited. This was no exception. The judge made an attempt to grab the kid.. before I go on, I must mention that this judge was a huge guy, maybe 120kg?... and this kid was really moving! Anyway, the judge instinctively reached out for the kid, but kept watching the kata. He mis-timed his grab and ended up completely coathangering this little kid. The kid's legs have kept going and he's ended up doing a sort of flip and landing on his face. The kid was ok, a little shaken up, but completely unhurt. It was the funniest thing we'd seen, and we still refer to it as "The coathanger of all coathangers"

  6. Power is the rate of transfer of energy to a body (no pun intended) by the application of a force that moves the body. Kinetic energy is generated in a human body by muscular contraction and relaxation. Clearly, all parts of the body from the foot to the knuckles should be engaged to maximise the difference between muscle torque and the load torque of the target body's weight. However, just as clearly, not all said parts should be overtly engaged. The power of a punch can be expressed as a function of the degree of engagement of all the muscles in the body (among other things - knuckle density etc). Due to variations in muscle power and body size from person to person, the ideal conditions and positions for maximising the function would also be different. However, for most of us, particular muscle groups work best in particular sequencing and at particular angles. This particular combination could be found through the use of a makiwara or a heavy punching bag (or maybe a training partner ) Another very important point to consider is that power isn't necessarily the most important aspect of a punch. The effectiveness of a punch is determined by the amount of energy transferred. A higher rate of transfer (power) will generally increase effectiveness, but the duration of the transfer is also important. It is important not to underestimate the value of structural support for a greater duration of power through penetration. Again, use of makiwara, a punching bag or training partner would be of great value. There is no substitute for experience!
  7. Jack of all trades, master of none....
  8. Both are very good for their intended purpose, but I guess the bag is more versatile..
  9. Yeah I agree. Fitness is important. As well as squats, I'd do some running or skipping. All the best!

  22. Jackie Chan can't kick past the knee? Funny, cause I've got this video with him kicking a guy in the head.. And why isn't Jet Li a real martial artist? How does one upgrade to being real? Aren't my white-belt students martial artists? Or are they just pretending to learn and train?
  23. ... Knowledge is about understanding, application, analysis, synthesis and evaluation! It is not logical to promote the exchange of knowledge and ideas and discuss differences without moving beyond factual knowledge to the higher order levels of thinking. Without a specific context, most people lack the cognitive ability to continue meaninful theorhetical discussion. I believe that Patrick is promoting both intellectual and social discussion and doesn't wish for distasteful and/or illogical put-downs. "Style-bashing" can come when emotion and loyalties interfere with productive and rational discussions. There should be no need to shy away from a constructive comparison of methods. Respectfully, V
