  1. Helped in your job KSN Doug Fancy answering this thread and elaborating a little? http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=8847
  2. I know what you mean. I think that it may embarass him and me.......so maybe I won't. Perhaps the gesture is in the gift alone.
  3. Sounds as though you have found a good club. Goodluck with your training and keep us posted as to how you get on. I would be especially interested to hear how you find your first lesson. Good luck and train hard
  4. It is my sensei's birthday on Friday. I cannot make it to his party but I have brought him a gift to give to him on Saturday when I go training. I got him a book which looks at Christian belief and karate training (he is a christian). What I would like to know is: Do you think that I should inscribe the book? I was thinking of writing something like: "Dave An inspiration in my karate and my life. Terry" Please, I would really value your opinions. Should I write anything, if so what do you think I should write? Or should I just leave it blank
  5. Now that you have begun you will undoubtedly find the forum more valuable than ever before. Good luck with your training.
  6. Well beer-monster. Obviously I do not chuck everything in. I have never done a hip toss on anyone at karate and rarely do I get the opportunity to do any groundwork. But the locks, sweeps, straggles, etc are easily adapted to my karate training.
  7. As someone put it to me once.................. "Should you wish to see where YOU SHOULD BE, all things being equal, refer to the "OLD, ORIGINAL, JAPANESE AND OKINAWAN TIME IN GRADE SCHEDULE", which (I think for economic reason) is rarely seen anymore. 17 years old:......... Senior Shodan. 19 years old:......... Nidan. 22 years old:......... Sandan. 26 years old:......... Yondan. 31 years old:......... Godan. 37 years old:......... Rokkudan. 44 years old:......... Shichi-dan. (or) Nana-dan. 52 years old:......... Hachi-dan. 61 years old:......... Kudan. (Reserved for the successor to the world head of style, never awarded to anyone else.) 71 years old:......... Judan. (Reserved for the world head of style ONLY, NEVER AWARDED TO ANYONE ELSE, NEVER)" You will notice between each dan there is the corresponding amount of years as ninjanurse originally wrote. Different styles/associations vary so it all depends. But this is they way I have always understood it to be.
  8. Hi wilko9999 Maybe you should've included longer than 5 years also. I started training in 1988. I got to 1st kyu after about 3 years then I had a break for a year or so. I returned to a different style and within 2 years I had got my Balck Belt. So intotal it took me 4-5 years.
  9. Hey Tibby. Yeah sorry it was late (was here in the UK anyway). I meant bodyweight not free weight. I did mean press up as an alternative term for push ups. I know that people call them different things and I wanted to try to minimise confusion Then I confuse you
  10. It is down to sensei' s discretion. He will invite students to grade when he thinks that they are ready. I have never known this to be under 3 months. He treats the children different though as they require the motivation more so than adults and the grades are only stripes not a full belt. But I have even known him to fail juniors on their low belts due to inability. He expects the best from us.
  11. Are you currently active? If you are not very active at the moment you will find that any kind of training will help you. It also depends on the dojo/ dojang that you join. I have practiced T-karate for many years and the clubs have all varied. The one I train at now has a strong empthasis on fitness. If you already have a couple of styles in mind I think that the best way to discover which one is for you is to try them. You will know which one you wish to practice. Good luck!
  12. Didn't I just answer this thread in another catagory
  13. Oh so karate did not come from JJ, I didn't think that was right. Judo definately did though Dr.Jigaro Kano I believe we have to thank. The funny thing is although JJ and karate do not come from the same source (or do they, see above) I can happily slip JJ into my karate training and noone can tell any difference The advantages of cross training I guess.
  14. Are you thinking of Bench Press? I mean Press ups (freeweight exercise).
  15. Depends how vain you are I do not know many karateka with visible abs and all my seniors seem to have a bit of a podge!
  16. I cannot see through my tears. You could send him round a "friends" house. The auction finished sept 2001. I wonder if he kicked anyones ass.....
  17. Ooops!! I didn't notice that it is the internal arts section. Very limited knowledge on internal arts. Try developing your tanden via breathing exercises and chishi.
  18. To elaborate on granmasterchen's question of "Why did you start?" I would like to ask has practicing martial arts changed your character. I used to be extremely arrogant and self centered. Now I am completely the opposite. Noone can ever belief that I was like that. Which is nice
  19. I remeber reading a world reknown martial artist criticising triaditional MA'ists striking the air as it has no benefits. Your points are valid ones and elaborate on my own thinking, thank you for your input.
  20. telsun

    Dan grading

Would you please explain what made it such a great experiance please.
  21. Speed will add power. Drive the hip through when you punch. Shoulders low. Push with your back foot to get all your bodyweight behind it. Develop strength in your tanden. Practice punching the bag or makiwara profusely. Punch through the target not just the surface. Get a good instructor to go through your technique with you. Good one to one instruction is your best route. Helped?
  22. Both arts have their advantages and indeed knowing both would be extremely beneficial That's why I have taken up Jujitsu, to complement my karate. I have been lead to believe that many arts derived from JJ, including karate and judo.

  24. Yeah I'm with everyone else on this one. So effective with so little effort. So you gonna tell us a story granmasterchen?
  25. Karate kid movie I think is the reason. My uncle used to teach me in my garden before I started at an official dojo. It is the only thing in life that I seemed to grasp straight away.
