Quite a few religous ones here then. As I said I am considering the Christian route but wonder if I am just trying to look for escape from being a failure in a material world.

What are your short term and long term martial art and non martail art goals? Mine: MA Short term: Win an interclub comp and obtain long overdue 2nd dan in Goju. Maintain Jujitsu practice. Long term: Run a MA school, make many MA friends, obtain BB in Jujitsu (a bit cliche but a goal none the less ) LIFE Short term: Finish decorating living room, clear debt Long term: Continue to be a good father and husband, make more time for people. Decide what career I should persue! If you wish to add time limits then please feel free. Setting deadlines often help goals become achievements rather than dreams.

Tibby, I run when I feel like it!! I don't think that I train to hard (is that possible ) Little and often. I think that you maybe onto something with the protein. Looking into my diet; there is less protein than I would have expected. So I will be upping my intake. Although I preferably like to get my protein from fish and white meat, do you think that this matters? Could my job be preventing me from getting sleep!! Working 12 hour nights and days does tend to effect my sleep, to say the very least. However as much as like to blame my work I know that it is down to my lack of discipline that I do not get enough sleep. StoneSkin, hypo glycemic is what the doc called it. Any suggestions as to healthy snacks I could be carrying?

My sensei very, very rarely gives praise. In the 4 years I have been with him he has praised me 4 times. Sometimes I get frustrated at the lack of praise and just will him to say "that's good" or something but it doesn't come. The way I receive praise from him, IMO, is at the lack of correction. You see sensei is extremely critical (although not overly critical) and will correct us alot. When he corrects my peers but not me I except this as his way of saying that I am doing it right/ well. I have also over heard him praise me openly to others.......... But he doesn't that I know..........shhhhhh!!!!

Hiya Joanne. Well I am certainly no expert, but IMO........ Seat Arosa - good choice, nice alternative to Polo Peugeot 106 - nice stylish car with lots of cred Renault Clio - I had a bad experiance and will never buy another Renault VW Polo - Would be my choice, style, excellent residuals, v.reliable Oh but the car I would choose given the choice in this sector would be a lovely little Yaris. Superb reliability, excellent residuals, some street cred, the Yaris just does it for me Are you buying brand new or second hand? Parkers online service https://www.parkers.co.uk is an excellent source for car details and they also produce a buyers guide in the form of price guides and car details which you can buy at a paper shop.

It is funny you started this thread Shotokan_Fighter as I was going to start one similar about shotokan karate. My thinking was actually a little different. I trained in shotokan for a fair few years and also visited many schools, some of the best in the country. However I usually found the style lacking depth and focused very little on practical fighting. But then I think back again and realise that I am just generalising. I have met and trained with some extremely competant Shotokan karateka and realise that it is much more down to the karateka and sensei than the style practiced.

Noone has said that all MA's are equal, just that there is no best To compare styles in UFC, well.......... What do you think TKD was originally for if not for self defence? Do you think that an army of men were taught how to go out to battle and score a few points with some flashy kicks? Admitedly from the outside looking in it would appear that TKD is purely sports orientated. But please do not judge it unless you have tried it. I had a very positive experiance of TKD and would not under rate it at all. Respect to TKD.
-
Well there obviously aren't many, if any, TKD practitioners on this forum True TKD is very practical and not just about Olympic type fighting. I have trained at both types and they both have something to offer. I believe there to be 2 major associations ITF and WTF. I think that it is the ITF that is the more practical of the 2 but that is not to dismiss the other. My friend was in the army and trained TKD with the Gurka's his TKD was of course extremely practical. By dismissing the TKD club completely just on the recommendation of others would be a big mistake. You could be missing out on something that you would be loving. Your reason for asking which to choose was due fitness not due to practical fighting skill, EITHER art may suit you on this basis, or any other basis for that matter . As battousai16 has said " There is no best Martial Art". And like I said before. If you have 2 clubs in mind then go and try them, it really is the only way you are going to find out which style it is that YOU WANT to do.

I am very sorry to hear that Fenris-wolf, I hope you get it all sorted soon. Well we are a varied bunch aren't we. The fact remains that MA's are all that I know and love. It is extremely unlikely that I will ever be able to make it my profession though Yeah okay I dream of owning a gym and martial arts centre but I do not believe that I possess the skills or knowledge to do so. The dream just isn't strong enough to follow it through. I have given this subject considerable thought. I decided that I would like to do some kind of healing. Chiropractor would be ideal but I would need to study full time and I have a wife and family to support and this is just not a viable option. I am looking into other courses (correspondance) that follow a similar path, hopefully I will end up it that kinda work. I can't help but wonder if I ever achieve my goal whether I will be happy there. Or will I always be seeking what I do not have? I will post on this again soon, gotta go...............

Well what did I decide...................to inscribe. I thought that it would make the gift much more personal. It felt kinda good when I wrote it, like I was actually getting a chance to express how much he has influenced me. He seemed humbled by the fact that I had even got him a gift. I was not with him when he opened it and I will not see him for a couple of weeks now. I feel good about the whole thing, like I did the right thing...........thanks all

From your reply I would guess that you do not. Sanchin and Tensho are 2 kata's practiced in various styles of karate. They empthasise your breathing and would help you regulate how you breath during practice. If you are not familiar with these kata it maybe worth looking into yoga or tai chi. Although I do not think that they use the same martial focus during their practice. It was just a thought.
-
Correct tanden breathing would not encourage him to breath. Although I suppose that if he was concentarating on breathing through the tanden then it just might. However as has already been said the strong exhalation on the technique would be enough to execute correct breathing. Try taking some deep breaths before starting your kata and as you have said yourself try not to concentrate so hard on it that you do it anyway!!! Do you practice Sanchin or Tensho in your style?

You could try soaking it in a bath of cold water with some soap powder in it. It got the mud out of my suit. Do not use bleach.

Karate vs Judo
telsun replied to LoneWolf's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Yes sansoouser. Thats what I meant when I wrote: Jujitsu was just a suggestion to combine the two arts instead of choosing between the two -
Belts also keep up motivation, giving the practitioner short term goals to aim for.

No need to explain.

Nope My better half wouldn't let me anyway If you find a nice pic you can right click on it and set it as Background. Forgive me if this is a patronising comment.

Karate vs Judo

Yes I am enjoying the discussion. I didn't mean it was getting out off hand, just turning into a bit of a debate. I am not sure of the style of JJ I am doing (Yoshin-ryu/Kano JJ, I'll find out)but it is like attending a karate class. Well a little. We always train with partners. They don't seem to practice kicking and stuff, in the air. But we do defences against kicking, punching, etc. Plus the usual throws and groundwork. Some of the stuff we do is similar to what we have done at karate, I think that is why I believe I can slip things in. I don't know if most JJ clubs train this way but the others I have seen around this area have been like a Judo class as someone mentioned earlier. -
Please I do not wish to start a religion argument. A simple yes will surfice. Although I would be interested in the way your fellow Christians view your practicing MA's. I by the way am not. Although I would say that I am exploring the Christian path due to my sensei's Christian values. Very inspiring.

Has your sensei done the back to the wall drill? Face your opponent with the wall right behind you so you cannot move backwards. When he attacks you will have to intercept or move to the side. It does take alot of practice sidestepping. I cannot sidestep everyone. However.......... During lasts year's association championship I had to fight this real big guy. He is very well respected within our association and I was relatively new to it. Anyway this guy attacks 100%, you know real hard. Before our fight he had some near disqualification strikes. I found that although I was unaware of my sidestepping ability it just came together with this guy. If you moved back he would just keep on coming. I surprised even myself and sensei said that I made it look easy. Which is a comment that will remain with me. Keep practicing and you'll get it too. Remember karate kid? (What do you mean never seen it!) When Daniel is doing all Mr Miyagi's chores. When tested he found that all his chores had developed his blocking skills with out him even being aware of the fact. It's not quite that easy but one day it will all click together. Keep practicing
