At your dojo, do you guys just do kata specific to your style. Or do you also practice katas from other martial arts styles?

Re-motivating yourself

Time off can be key to a long martial arts career. In fact it should be mandatory instructors take a few days off every so often, just so they don't get burned out.. -
Does anyone have a problem with the Eosin Panther site
The Pred replied to The Pred's topic in Equipment and Gear
I've emailed them they were nice about. I was able to order a keychain thru paypal. They said they were in the process of updating their site, in which people would be able to see the different key chains. -

As sad as that is, it's true! ::sighs:: While that may be said, on the plus side, since those kids are teaching better now. With more experience and practice, they should(hopefully) because excellent instructors once they reach an adult age. -

Hi, I was wondering if anyone else or if its just me, that's having problem with the eosin panther site. I have some old items in the cart that I would like to remove, but it's not letting me. I've tried different browsers, in the qty I've put in 0, -1, delete, remove, nothing works. So does anyone have this problem PS. Despite the problem, their belts are amazing. -
What is your student turnover rate?
The Pred replied to Luther unleashed's topic in Instructors and School Owners
This got me thinking, out of the 300 million people in America. How many altogether, does everyone think have done martial arts including those whose still does it.Whether it have been for years, or even a week. My guess it would be a high number. Perhaps in the millions. -
But sensei, when do I get to...

I believe that you've hit the nail right on its head!! Curriculums are a plate full to deal with, nowadays!! Why? In the hopes of challenging our students each and everyday. Yet, even if your curriculum was as it was/is in Okinawa with teaching a few things for months, it's the quality of the instructions that would make the student not even think they were only being taught a few things for months; they'd be challenged in appropriate measures. It seems that curriculums of nowadays are to match the upcoming testing cycle which is held once every 3 months, and todays dojo's want substance for a testing cycle. The appearance of normalcy!! A typical Shindokan testing cycle will have anywhere near 30 items in the beginner ranks, then double in the intermediate ranks, then triple in the advanced ranks, then quadruple or more in the Dan ranks...and this is on an average, but the number of items tested varies as it's meant to over time!! 10th Kyu will do this many, then 9th Kyu will do a little more, then 8th Kyu will do much more, and so on and so forth all the way up to Hachidan. This explains why a some testing cycles take longer than others! However, our Soke firmly implanted into Shindokan that QUALITY was always at the core, and that QUANTITY is never considered!! My friends who does martial arts with me, kid also does it. Parents are making him take a promotion once a year, until he reaches 14-16 for black. Furthermore, was your Kudan test, the longest and hardest test in the history of Shndokan? Parents are?? Parents don't run ANYTHING in the dojo, or they shouldn't be!! Imho, that decision lies strictly with the CI. To my Kudan testing cycle...YES!! True parents don't run a dojo. But customers overall do run it. Because as stated before, " Then he said if he tried to teach exactly as he was taught, he might have maybe three regular students instead of a dozen, which is still a small dojo. Maybe that is a sign of our times and the general attitude." Which is a shame I'd rather close the doors forever than to allow parents to even think for a second that they indirectly run my dojo!! That'll never ever happen, and if I have only 1 student or 3 students, then so be it. I'm not selling my integrity to fill the floor!! And if I've no students because I won't let parents or anyone for that fact, run my dojo, then I'll at least have one heck of a place to train at. -

Seems like a great drill, I think this drill would be especially great for black belts. -
Not really sure, though how many school have a makiwara

Completely agreed. I genuinely wonder why most traditional striking arts still practice without shoes. I understand the Japanese/Asian culture of no shoes in the house. We don't have that custom engrained in us here. Wearing shoes while kicking changes a ton of things. The front kick using the ball of the foot becomes quite different in a pair of sneakers. Pivoting becomes different. I think we should wear shoes that are only worn in the dojo. Possibly wrestling shoes. I'm not trying to break tradition, but some traditions shouldn't be done for the sole sake of tradition when there's a more logical and beneficial approach. Not sure about ground fighting heavy systems. Wrestling shoes make sense too, but that's my former wrestling background. Back to my original thought for this post - if you can't pull off a technique in a no gi/t-shirt situation, how functional is that technique truly? If a t-shirt is too light to be able to grab it as part of a throw or choke, how would you use that technique when a t-shirt wearing attacker comes at you? How many attackers are wearing something that a gi would approximate on the 4th of July (or New Year's Day in the Southern Hemisphere)? I have no judo nor jujitsu experience, so don't take that the wrong way; just trying to learn. I agree, when I was younger I ended up with a planters wart on my foot, so I had to start wearing shoes. After which I never looked back. One I believe it to be more sanitary and two, it makes pivoting a lot harder. After all on the street you will be wearing shoes.

What makes a good instructor?
The Pred replied to muttley's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
That's an individuals choice, imho, because it's a personal choice!! Having said that, hopefully, one didn't learn the MA just to teach MA; that's limiting, imho!! I know countless MAists that don't teach, yet they're Senior Dan's in their respective MA...teaching just isn't their bag. Very solid point ! -

I agree with the not all black belts should teach. With that said, since all black belts shouldn't teach, should those people only go up to a certain rank and no further. -
Congratulation Bob ! Here's to 10,000 more post, and 50 more Years in the Martial Arts !

Has anyone in the history of the SKKA left you guys and started their own system not under the SKKA hombu banner? To my knowledge...nope!! We've expelled the San Dai-Soke for cause, but he's not surfaced in that regard as of yet, albeit, we're surprised of that, and we expect him to do that very thing. If he or anyone else has, well, it's not came to our attention, as of yet. The SKKA might only be interested if the Shindokan shield was being used without the explicit written permission from the SKKA! They can start a system all they want, and teach Shindokan all they want under their own banner, just as long as they're not using the Shindokan shield. Just look at the avatar to the left, under the user name...that's the Shindokan Shield, of which I've proprietary rights to through my office as Kaicho of the SKKA, as granted by, and through, the SKKA. Just curious, but, why do you ask, The Pred?? Just wondering, since the topic was about governing bodies.Since there are people that leave organizations, due to politics or they want to go off on their own. Ok. I thought that you might have some information regarding the Shindokan Shield being used elsewhere!! Aforementioned, we're on a close lookout for the San Dai-Soke to do that very thing. His knowledge about Shindokan is solid across the board, without reservation, both historical, as well as technical, but that still gives him no rights to the Shindokan Shield. You know what, I think I need to call our Legal Team and make sure that the Shindokan Shield can't be used by the San Dai-Soke. After all, he's still in possession of some certain sensitive documentations when he closed the first Hombu. Hope everything works out !

MA uniforms as Street wear
The Pred replied to Judodad_karateson's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Good thinking - I never thought of using them like that. You know...reuse, recycle and all. Why not having a hand-me-down gi?? I like the idea across the board. After all, the hand-me-down mindset has been culture of many countries for as long as they can remember. I've given old gis to fellow dojo peeps. -
Very respectful that you didn't correct the instructor. As far as showing the brown belt, if she's asking for your help, I would feel honored. Besides you're both still kyu ranks.

Old gi pants of my that started to get holes in the crotch area, is now used as winter pants under my snow pants. -
No specific gi design. I understand white because it's traditional, I don't think little kids should wear white. As for me, I only wear all white during a promotion cermony. I usually wear black.
