  1. Yes patient is a virtue. Besides if you did get a physical alteraction, whose to say he wouldn't sue for assult especially if he lost.
  2. She's been doing her own "katas" for a while now. Running around punching, kicking, jumping and kiai'ing. I bought her some focus mitts last year for Christmas that she loves punching and kicking. My wife and I sit and watch her do her "kata," then my 2 year old has a turn too. I've taught her basic punches and kicks - mae geri, mae keage, kin geri, mawashi geri. Tried the basic blocks, but she struggled a bit. She struggled a bit in class with basic stuff I didn't teach her - yoi, noare, mawate. She picked up on those in class though. She's such a smart and athletic kid, and very focused. I just want her to keep the focus and love for it. Awesome, best of luck
  3. How many days a week does your daughter go? And out of those days how many classes per day?
  4. What size KI is your uniform. I have a size 5 pants. I'm 5ft 7-5ft 8. But wasn't sure about the waist in the size 4. Do the gi tops run longer than century? I wear a size 5 KI and size 5 Ronin. I don't have the Century anymore, so I'm going by memory. They're all pretty similar in cut. The Century and KI are about the same jacket length. The Ronin is longer. The Century and KI's jacket are about a hand (wrist to fingers) and a half length from the belt to the bottom. That's when I'm standing straight and pull it down. Moving around, it feels like it's going to come out from under my belt sometimes, but never actually has. The Ronin goes down to almost my fingertips. Compared to the KI, my Ronin pants are a little slimmer in the waist, but a little baggier in the legs. Not much for either one, but just enough for me. Wouldn't notice it until you tried it on and started kicking and going into stances. The jacket on all 3 are virtually the same, minus length. A lot of people at my current dojo and more so at my former dojo wear Century 12 oz gis. Most at my current dojo wear the KI 14 oz. My Ronin 12 oz looks and fits better than anyone else's gi. I can't believe I said that last line. Makes me feel like the dojo's a fashion show lol. Definitely not the case. If you're in the market for a 12 oz. Century, the 12 oz. Ronin is a no brainier. Better in every way, and cheaper. Cool thanks for the info

  6. Are there any dojo's run by a 1st dan?
  7. I think either way is fine. I mean if you have a small dojo not part of any organization or hombu then the CI can keep a better eye one students. However, if you're part of a large organization then perhaps a testing should be in order. Just my two cents
  8. The most important kata is whatever your school/system/hombu or even yourself decides is the most important.
  9. Agreed with what you said, plus you need to have patience. Be nice when necessary but at the same time, have an authoritative voice if need be.
  10. I hate that especially the ring around the collar. I mean I know no one else can see it. But I see it, and it's a huge pet peeve of mine. Which is one of the only reasons why I only wear my white gi top or whole white gi in general for special occasions such as promotions.
  11. Hmm not sure what Martial Art you should do. However, the question of group or private is a good one. If it's gonna be at the Hombu then I would do private. However, if you travel to another dojo, then do group. Are you speaking about the Shindokan Hombu or dojo's within the Shindokan network?? Hmmm, I guess the Shindokan Hombu? Whenever I'm at the Shindokan Hombu, I will train with those that are usually Rokudan and above, and primarily with Greg, our Kancho. As Kaicho, I'll teach quite often, if not all of the classes while I'm in house. When it comes to my training time at the Hombu, there will be about 15 Senior Dan Ranks on the floor with me; all of us training! Greg, well, that's usually just us on the floor but spectators will be there because Greg and I train quite extremely. Awesome, are there any classes you enjoy teaching more than others? Such as kids or adults?

  14. We have specific classes that just focuses on kata. Other classes is mainly on kihon and kumite
  15. Solid post!! Not every instructor can teach 4-5 year olds; it takes a special instructor to do so successfully. And you're right, it is "playing" because that's how they learn, and how they retain, even if it's a miniscule of information...patience is greatly needed to teach that age group. Everyone knows that when it comes to that age group, I'm nothing more than a big kid. That age group responds to that silly instructor who they can play with. If I may ask... What happened that made you make that statement to your wife?? Have you taught that age group? 4 and 5 year olds?
  16. Never really went to a lot of tournaments when I was younger. Was busy with either going to church or boy scouts stuff. Plus when I was younger wasn't that good at kata. And not a fan of point sparring. Though I understand not having kids do full contact.
  17. Seriously? Just 3 years? You've just started..what do you expect? lol It was around my 15th year that things just "clicked" for me. it was like a light bulb going on in my head and body, and I've never looked back. Things just started making sense. Not sure of when things clicked for me, but I do know it was a bit of a process. When I was younger I really wasn't a fan of doing it. (I enjoy it now, parents made me go when I was younger without no choice) However, I started making friends with people who at the time was better than me (all of them pretty much left) so that gave me the motivation to get better. Then one day when it came to certain techniques I suddenly got it. So no need to worry, some gets their slower than others.
  18. Is there a particular reason why its the last week of June/ first week of July? Seems like most people would be on vacations during that time frame. Btw has anything come about in regards to the number of failures of the last testing cycle that you talked about before.

    Kata

Yeah...each and every single one was difficult for me, one not more difficult than another. For some reason or another, I struggled to the nth degree!! I just can't put my finger on one specific Kata...I'm trying to, but I can't single out one. Yes I struggled when I was younger, now that I'm older I feel like I'm able to remember stuff better.

    Kata

I believe after learning the basic katas in one particular system. A student should be introduced to the higher level katas. However, one particular student should really focus on one or two and make that the best of his or her ability. Not saying they shouldn't be good at all their katas that they learned. However, everyone should have his or her speciality.
  21. Don't wash it, though I will spray lysol spray on it, just to get rid of the smell.

    Kata

Solid posts everyone. Plus I'm sure everyone here had a kata that they had trouble learning more so than others.
  23. When i was younger I always had a hard time learning kata. Now that I'm older I find it much easier. Still not my cup of tea, but there are some many unique attacks one can get from them. One of my favorite is Mawashi ich and tensho
