out to the side. i cant do it, and i think my hips are just not going to give me any more space to work with. i was doing round house kicks last night, and did one with my right leg, and leaned to the left side...well, i leaned a little too far and something gave in the left hip socket and i came crashing down. It wasnt serious, just sudden sharp pain. it wasnt a stretched muscle, it was more of a joint pain. so i dont think ill be able to split all the way out to the sides.

Christians and the Martial Arts
newbalance replied to kchenault's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
M.L.King Jr. comes to mind. I have read a couple of books by christians who compare the eastern religions to christianity, and most seem pretty positive to a lot of aspects of it. Can't help with any names though. -
Yes, another thread about splits. Is it possible one has reached an age where splits are impossible to do all the way? I stretch and stretch, but I have reached a point where it hurts my hip sockets more than it pains the stretched muscle. What do you think? Can some just not do them?

Im 25, and im in a new growth spurt. Since joining TKD 4 months ago, I have grown an inch taller and put on 5 lbs, mostly muscle.

what do you think of mediocre blackbelts?
newbalance replied to kungfumaster's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
About my feelins about mediocre black belts: there are a couple where I train, and I don't really look kindly to a black belt who sometimes graces us with their presence, then messes up doing the forms they are supposed to know. Its embarrassing to watch first and second degree black belts who dont know basic black belt form. Im only a yellow, but my mindset is that I am to take my forms seriously, and I do. Why don't these black belts? Do they not have to? Am I wrong for looking at it this way? It kind of makes me take their advice less seriously than the black belts who know what they are doing 100%. -
I havent gone over rules with my instructor about sparring, since I havent started doing it yet, so let me ask a couple more questions. Are head shots ever allowed? fist or kicks? What constitutes a point? a clean kick to the chest pad? punch to the chest pad? thanks
-
was going to start sparring tonight, but the instructor has to fit me with gear first, so ill be watching tonight. anways, here is the question. foam or cloth gear? how much should each of them cost? I am getting cloth pads for about $55 total...fill me in here, thanks.

We were doing some grappling one Friday, and it was the first time for me. I went against two different guys, one being tougher than the other. So the first one was the guy that was good, and my mindset was "just dont let him beat you"...and he didnt, and I ended up beating him. The next guy, this was his first time, and my mindset was "I should be able to beat this guy" and he beat me. It was interesting to notice that when I thought the guy was better than me, I fought harder. When I thought I had the advantage, I didn't fight as hard. /rant

How old when you started?
newbalance replied to mouko_yamamoto's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
started at tender age of 24 -
Sounds like he would have some tough students. Doesnt sound all that bad. Fortunately, it is an ART, and hopefully we have the freedom to express ourselves individually as we please.

Summer is over

SO does this mean that there will be less little ones in my classes? -
What's your street experience?
newbalance replied to Kirves's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
I have never been in a fight on the street, have always backed away. Jail and a broken nose are more painful then the stares of people I don't know. Haven't been approached since I have been in TKD, but have been in a few fights, none scaringly serious, while growing up. -
I found this site to be really helpful. http://nunchaku.tv/

There is a guy in my TKD class, 20yrs old, who is really athletic, and is taking to TKD very well. Strong, lean, and fast. Anyways, what do you all think about skipping a belt, just like people skipping a grade? He is a white belt, and wants to test for a yellow belt, instead of the white w/stripe. He won't be testing for yellow. Guess my instructors don't do that. Honestly, I am glad. I was in the same predicament, and just dealt with it. In my opinion it teaches patience. I knew I could test for the yellow when I was a white, but that isn't the way TKD works, you know? This guy reminds me of Tommy Gun from Rocky 5.

I have become much more familiar with knuckle push ups, bowing, stretching, and walking with an air of confidence...and more veins are starting to bulge in new places all over.

I couldnt have said it better myself.

Strange pain while butterfly stretching.
newbalance replied to NFleischman's topic in Health and Fitness
No advice, but Ill say that I get a strange pain when I do splits underneath my right shin. I dont know what it is, but I know that it hurts, and it isnt going away. I guess God didnt make me perfect. Darn. -
Yea, hyperextended my ankle kicking the bags in class. Inexperience is a brutal teacher. Can walk and run, but can't roundhouse or kick anything with it. Anyways, my question is this: I bought an ankle brace...how often do I wear it? At work and play? 24/7? Just to class? I forgot to ask the teacher, and before I do would like to hear from you.

board breaking
newbalance replied to Shotokan_Fighter's topic in TKD, TSD, Hapkido, and Korean Martial Arts
Has anyone mentioned yet that breaking boards is fun? -
Interesting. So broken toes require no medical attention? Is this only for the small four or Big toe and all?
-
Stupid question probably. Been in TKD for 3 months now, and many of my bones are starting to crack, a lot like my knuckles. Is this normal? Does this go away, or will it continue? Everything is popping, it seems like.
-
I started TKD two months ago, and have been doing lots of stretching. One stretch in particular that is serving a problem is split with toes pointed in air, and sometimes split with feet on ground. On my right leg, running right under the shin bone down to the ankle, a nerve keeps popping. It isn't going away either. I should be asking a doctor, I know, but wanted to pose it here first. Thats really all the info I can give. Anyone else have anything similar?

Some other versions: -Push up hard each time, and clap -fold your hands inwards and do them on the backs of your hands. -ultra slow push ups, going up and down -try to look forward instead of down. makes them harder -put a cloth or something under your feet on a hard surface, and walk around on your hands in the pushup position -when you get to the down position, hold it, and sway left and right, stretching out the chest muscle on each side. -put a bookbag full of books on your back, for more weight

This is a helpful book. My dad trained with Joe Hess, and gave this book to me. It is really working well. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0897500865/qid=1057002307/sr=1-3/ref=sr_1_3/103-2418598-7937435?v=glance&s=books
