  1. I train in judo because of the thrill, fighting " playing " as we call it wrestling grappling, throwing all in good fun. No one gets hurt if they learn to fall and I do it for fitness sport and I guess self defense. But it doesn't have much of a spiritual side to it. I train because it's fun and I love being thrown through the air, no greater feeling. awwww After all it's the closest i get to flying when my sensie launches me across the room...
  2. Ok, first off the katas... They are useless in a fight but I guess they train you somehow. Maybe for excersise, I am no karate expert though, but if you train in full contact karate you should be fairly effective, I mean karate will help you but if you don't spar full out then how will you know what works and what doesn't? I take judo and we spar full out but there are no strikes, just throws, wrestling, chokes, armbars and such.
  3. Yes, kung fu is very effective once learned. It's like playing chess shall we say. It usually takes people along time to master it but once they do they are great at it, same with kung fu. It may take you more than 3 years to learn to use it effectivley though. But once you master it you will be a quite a shall we say " butt kicker? " The techniques take time to learn but if you practised hard under good instruction and atleast 3-4 times a week within 6-12 months you should be able to dish out alot of punishment but after a couple years you will become great if you are dedicated and train hard.
  4. It is said that if you can take 7 guys at a time, then if you had the stamina you could take 100. Because it's been proven that only 7 people can attack you at one time unless they mob you or like dog pile you. I myself don't know, in rhondori in judo i took 2 but thats withoiut punches and kicks so its hard to say.
  5. How street effective is judo against your style? How is it similar and how is it different? Do you do much full contact sparring in your style?
  6. I think it just goes to show Bruce was hot headed and didn't like to lose, like he said I won't quit till you die or I die.
  7. well, there is matwork practice where you start sitting down back to back and they say hagi may and you wrestle.
  8. How long does it take? What I mean for is for self defense and street fights. Thanks
  9. ya i flipped a guy who punched at me and he fell and broke a rib and his elbow, beware they are dangerous, by the way it was a seoi nage it is a really good throw for countering a straight punch otherwise I like to use a grab and toss throw like ogoshi or anything that will make them think twice
  10. In matches sometimes I stand up to begin with then sit down and wait for them. But no usually you fight standing up.
  11. What are the similarities between the two and what are the differences? What does one have that the other doesn't visa versa.
  12. Your point to your last comment was? 10 posts? And?
  13. Ya, I probably should have but from past expierences of them ( drunks ) rushing me was kinda a quick reaction. Because most just come up and swing at me or bring a bottle with them.
  14. Well, I don't know much about San Soo but from what you've said it may have the same principals as judo throws but San Soo includes more punches and kicks but judo specializes in throws arebars and chokes. So I that they are similar in the throwing techniques but judo uses very little strikes mostly all of which are taught at black belt level.
  15. OK, would San Soo be good in a street brawl? No rules both mutual decision on fighting.
  16. How effective is kung fu san soo for street fights? Just like to know what you guys think, thanks.
  17. An all out brawl, no rules fight
  18. How often does someone have to defend themselves? I am a black belt in judo so it's a little late to decide to start or not. But I am wonder if I should start a striking art, ( although my sensie teaches black belts the true judo striking techniques ) like TWD or kung fu or oryu karate. But I am wondering if it is worth starting a new martial art all over again. My judo seems to have " stopped " any attack that has come to me ( a quick throw or armbar usually stops them ) so thanks for your answers.
  19. Well said MArtial. I have seen the statistics to. A firearm can and mostly likely will ward or discourage an attacker from going any further, but again if you can't carry a firearm then this doesn't matter.
