HE WON, HE WON! Chris my brother (see pic on my website) won the fight in under 2 min. SHOTOKAN BABYYYYYY. He fought a guy with 13 years training in Mauy Thai, Chris's stand up has been changed a little to reflect full contact fighting (more then self defence) and look good. The thai guy clinched and Chris picked him up with an upper body lock and slammed him (I'm hoping to add pic's of this next week) and his mouth piece popped out. Chris applied a head and arm choke and that was it. Shotokan put out a good showing that night and we return in 2 months to fight again. Mady's Isshin Ryu Club was there and look awsome and we made connection with a full contact Goju Ryu club and another full contact Isshin ryu club.... OSU!

My brother is fighting in his first MMA match. He teaches shotokan with me and his base is shotokan. We also do jiu jitsu/judo and box. Wish us luck!

Bow in Warm up, lasts about 30min. squats, sit ups, kota kitia drills, ibuki. Kata for about 20 min. - 30 min. break Kihon 20min. Kumite, both set and free for about 45min. We did a run through of kumite for the grading syllabus then dropped blows. No makuso, but bowed out. OSU! Sat around for a couple of min. stretching and cooling down.

Which three punches do you use and in what order? ex. Kizama zuki, Oi Zuki, Yaku zuki?

Ananku is a nice short kata and we will be studying other Okinawan kata...

I agree. We should use karate as a martial sport and fighting art. If someone has a moral or spiritual concern then I speak to them about Jesus, but that has nothing to do with karate. Just as football has nothing to do with religion either. I just wanted to know what you thought of a more current translation of the kun, it's just that simple.

In all the shotokan clubs I have ever been in no one ever stressed any moral princples. (other then try not using what you have learned here, walk away from a fight) But at the same time no one ever showed as much disrespect to others beliefs as you have by calling them "*." Maybe a little character building is needed? I’m a born again Bible believing fundamentalist Christian, so I have little use for the dojo kun, I do however respect the beliefs of others.

I've been training 15 years in shotokan. I have never been under any "moral pressure" from any of my teachers. I just wanted to know which translation was better.

Goju/Uechi are a solid, stand your ground and fight style. Shotokan/shorin ryu are a faster attacking style. Kyokushin uses aspects from both so I voted Kyokushin. I teach Shotokan with knock down kyokushin style sparring and hope to use more naha te as my club moves up the ranks. Osu!

I had read that the Okinawans did in fact use the Chineses sash system. I think it was in the lastest Martial Arts. If you look at pictures of Chosen Miyagi he does wear a sash, I can't say if it was for rank. I was happy with my shodan as well. I didn't test for my nidan until I had to.

I going to a sem this Sunday, we are studying the two above kata with bunkai. Does anyone know how many verison of each exist? (I'm learning the Matsubayashi ryu verisons)

I use the bottom (sole) of my foot. I try and scoop the foot upward...it's in the timing.

I did judo to help with sweeps and takedowns. I like to jam mawashi geri's with my shoulder and then sweep. If someone is using a mae geri I try to allow the kick to just miss me then sweep the supporting leg. I use the bottom of my foot to sweep like in judo, but if the guy is being a jerk then I go shin to shin. Timing is very important when sweeping, timing is the sweep. If you try and sweep a leg that is planted, no such luck. Try to catch him coming in. In judo we would take a grip (one hand on lapel the other on the gi by the elbow) then we would walk around the dojo and not look at each others feet. After a short while you will be able to tell by body motions when a person is stepping in. It's like sticky hands in wing chun. Another way is to throw attacks to jodan and never stop sweeping with your feet. Step in deep after an attack and aim a low gedan mawashi across the back of the legs. (only do these sweeps with mats, OSU!) Sho-ju aka the Broom

JKA style clubs, if I'm not mistaken, do it almost every grading. It has been in every grading I've ever done from 8 kyu up...

How many clubs use this combo...is it just shotokan?
-
How do I build it back up again so I can punch the bag?

Can anyone list a brand they have used or recommend with web sites? I need very durable pads…

Focus, footwork, breathing. It's like shadow boxing of sorts, it's for the karateka when they get older.

Is he really as good as people say he is? What is it that he does that is so great?
