  1. It most certainly is true. http://www.freerangekids.com/crime-statistics/ The reason you see it more now is because news moves faster and is EVERYWHERE. Someone sees someone who kinda creeps them out in a park in LA and within minutes it's shared on social media with people all over the world (even if literally nothing comes of it because it was just a normal, innocent guy walking in the park). You're just exposed to it more. I agree with the crime rate being at it's lowest in decades...except for the fact that according to 538, murder is up for the 3rd straight year in a row, although not as much as the previous 2 years. Now this applies only in the U.S., but it is an interesting statistic to consider with regard to crime rates. A friend of mine is a reporter for a major TV station down in Detroit. She says that they sometimes don't report on some murders, simply because there aren't enough reporters to cover the stories on a given day. Frequently, those stories that do get airtime do not get followed up on due to the time/manpower constraints.
  2. Small schools could suffer from the lack of training. I am hoping that I can become an instructor, as well. Unfortunately, our master instructor will likely be retiring after a few years. I don't think we will have anyone higher than 2nd dahn or 3rd dahn once he leaves (I might barely get my black belt by then, if I can avoid injury.)
  3. I'm going back for my second bone crunching, tomorrow. And a deep-tissue massage! I think it'll be nifty!
  4. Well, as we get up there in age, a lot of us find that we can't do the same things we used to when we were younger. How many of the older folks here can still do a full splits (provided you were able to at any point in the past?) Are your jumping kicks still as high and as sharp as before? Our master instructor is getting his hip resurfaced in about a month. I know several other folks who've been practicing for years and needed various joints scoped and/or replaced. Sounds like this could be something your instructor is experiencing, too.
  5. As hapkido is part of our curriculum, we do a fair bit of training on the mats. At first, it was just how to fall/roll. Now they're getting into how to get back up. It's pretty nifty, and useful!
  6. I've known plenty of inner-city folk with dreads. They use shampoo just like everyone else.
  7. Is this too absurd to ponder, if a vegetarian would eat a Venus Flytrap? As a carnivore, would you feed a pig bacon? I new a vegetarian that tried to make the pet cat vegetarian also, the cat died of of course from meow-nutrition. If you go to Las Vegas, you can visit the local pig farms. They feed the pigs all the scraps from the casinos. I highly doubt they separate the pork from everything else.
  8. I just had my first visit to a chiropractor. I must say... I'm a convert! Initially, I went in due to a severe stiff neck. It started over the winter when my dad came up to visit. We went to check out the ice caves in Eben Junction, MI. A brutal snowstorm just passed through, and the trails had a mix of ice and fluffy, fresh snow. All I did was fall. After a couple weeks of suffering, I went to a doctor. Ibuprofen and muscle relaxors... Eventually things got a bit better, but I kept getting flareups. This time I decided to check with a chiropractor. I get in there, tell him my story, and then he tosses me up on the table. It turns out my pelvis was rotated a bit, I had a dislocated rib and 6 or 7 vertebrae were out of whack. The relief was almost instant. I'd say I'm about 60% or 70% better. That issue with the pelvis might have been causing me my hip issues, too. He mentioned that I might have been experiencing issues with my right hip being strained. He was right. I start sports-therapy on that this coming Monday!
  9. Yep, I am aware! It does have many photos of Bruce Lee's hand-written journals/workout logs. John Little was also a friend of Bruce Lee's.
  10. Any Wiki that's worth reading is usually fairly well moderated. If enough people pipe up, that usually helps errors get fixed. But since these are frequently edited by "non-experts," there can be errors.
  11. hey, singularity6 have you watched a film yet? pink Not yet. Eventually, though!
  12. My primary focus was physical fitness, and largely still is. I am kind of a nerd, so the art and the history of martial arts are hugely fascinating to me. I'm sure I'm not alone, here!
  13. Do you have a source for that? Seems more like a product of other factors such as lifestyle rather than diet specifically. Otherwise you wouldn't get meat-eating gymnasts or vegan bodybuilders. I was thinking the same thing
  14. I recently ordered the book online. Overall, I'd say it seems like a very good guideline for a physical fitness plan. The man was in amazing shape, after all! Here are some notes. Good: Explains Bruce Lee's overall philosophy when it comes to weight, resistance, isometric, cardio, flexibility training as well as diet. Provides the reader with a list of exercises and their verbal descriptions. Gives one a solid picture of the routines Bruce Lee would follow. Bad: Most exercises do not have any real visual depictions. Pictures included are just nifty pictures of Bruce Lee doing what Bruce Lee does. Fortunately we have YouTube to fall back on! Ugly: WAY too much fluff. This book could either be half the size if we left out all the chatter the author adds in, or it could have included useful pictures/diagrams depicting each exercise.
  15. Yeah, the prospect of moving came up for me a few months ago, as well. Leaving my TKD school was the thing I feared most! I really like the school and would rather not start all over just yet.
  16. I thought about making a new post, but it seems fitting to post here. I'll be starting boxing "lessons" in about a week or so. A friend of mine fights semi-professionally (and his dad did as well.) He just rented some space to hang some bags, and I asked how much it'd be for some bag time. He told me free, but I'll insist on flipping him at least a few bucks. I also asked for some pointers, and he was more than thrilled to help me out! Besides, I think he'd like something to beat on for a while, anyway.
  17. I have been consistent with tracking my weight. Had my followup appointment today, and yeah... 8.5lb weight reduction!
  18. I think that maybe students have changed over the years, as well. It's no secret that (American) children are less fit these, when compared to kids from "the old days." This could make instruction less fun. Just a thought.
  19. I think you can find this pattern among educators in general. I'm sure everyone has experienced it in school and/or college. You know... teacher or professor riding out retirement. I don't think it's anything to do with Martial Arts specifically.
  20. I've been using a 1" dowel for shin conditioning... I'm no where near baseball bats, though! Maybe one day...
  21. It looks like the wife will be passing me up, this time. Bum hip. :-/ Sorry to hear that!! Don't fret much! Just continue to train as your hip will allow! Meanwhile, support your wife as she prepares, and then takes her testing cycle. That's the plan! I'm not in a hurry.
  22. My second day back to class after a 6 month hiatus was a kick-heavy day. The morning after that, I went on a 4 mile hike and pushed myself. My legs were SORE for about 3 days. Oof.
  23. We are waiting for kettle bells to go on sale at our local Meijer... At which point we will probably invest in a 15lb and a 25lb, and incorporating them into our workouts.
