  1. "We have heavy bags, boxing equipment, we spar, just because we take it easier on certain techniques doesn't mean those technique don't work." I'm curious as to when your "traditional" art of Budo Taijitsu picked up heavy bags and boxing equipment and worked that into their curriculum. Maybe modern technologies and techniques have a bigger place in your art than you think. By the way, that poll is somewhat loaded.
  2. A TMA vs MMA thread that I had nothing to do with? Weird.
  3. A takedown is called a shot, the active form of which is shoot. A "shoot" is a real fight with no predetermined outcome, a term which comes from catch as catch can wrestling. A "Work"=fixed fight, Shootfighting="Real" fight.
  4. How do you hold your hands when you fight? Mine are up in front of my face, with my forearms protecting my ribs. I catch most kicks to the body on the tip of my elbow. They don't like that.
  5. I say Royce. Just as Bruce Lee changed the face of martial arts in the late 60's-early 70's, Royce did in the 90's. The difference is, Royce did it through competition, Bruce did it through movies. Sure Bruce had a wider impact, but give the legacy of Royce another twenty years. None have equalled Lee, but Gracie is the only one who even comes close. Okay, maybe Billy Blanks.
  6. Everyone likes to think there are eighty year old wizened masters who can woop up on all the MMA bullies.
  7. I believe in the tooth fairy.
  8. Wolvie got the adamantium back when he became one of the four horsemen. He was death.
  9. To the best of my knowledge, Tank has never towed a semi truck with no tow truck. He is known to weep at the carnage of the keg toss, however.
  10. Well, even presuming Chi exists does not mean all of the feats attributed to it are true. Say it does exist. Does this mean a young Mike Tyson would have punched harder with a little Chi development? Chi may exist and be very beneficial to one's health and well-being. This does not mean Chi development is the only or best way to prepare for a fight.
  11. Like, for instance, they have no bat, but they have a wicked takedown. What do you do? Thrash like a hippie in water, or swim like a shark?
  12. If you get to the range that the bo would be useless, you won't find much use for a bokken either.
  13. Aren't groin strikes legal in traditional Muay Thai? (in Thailand)
  14. I also have to cede that the best fighters don't always make the best teachers.
  15. "Every instructor I ever had was either a war veteran, or had fought a lot in his youth and learning Martial Arts kept him from fighting." Did any of them fight using the techniques they had learned in their respective arts? "I wouldn't study Sport Martial Arts from someone who has never been in a fight, no." And what of combat martial arts?
  16. "I would say someone who has studied his Art for the last 40 years, has more to teach, than a fighter in his prime. As in any Art it takes a lot longer to be a Master than it does to be contender." And what if the man who studied for forty years has never been in a fight? Would you take a driving course from a man who has never driven?
  17. Why counter the BJJ fighter? Why not buy him a beer and have him show you how to roll? You'll learn a lot more that way.
  18. This is not a thread to argue the existence of Chi/Ki/Qui/inner power, but a thread to pose a question. Presuming Chi exists, is the cultivation of such the best way to perfect martial technique, or is the perfection of technique the best way to cultivate Chi... And how do you weigh internal force against the scientific training methods of today?
  19. To hurt, and not get hurt.
  20. The bo can be used at a much longer range than the bokken, and is still effective in close. Advantage=BO
  21. "Come on, how can you dismiss hundreds of years of fighting and not come to the conclusion that these people have more experience than some prize fighter?" Who has more experience? Someone who learned from someone who learned from someone who learned from an experienced fighter, or that experienced fighter himself?
