I recently bought some shuriken and began practicing with them. My first one was light and stuck into the target about 3 out of 4 times. My second and third were much heavier and usually don't stick. Should I be concerned about this? I was told that they were designed not to stick, but to bounce away.

I just became a freshman and thanks to an ex karateka, the whole school and the middle school knows I'm a black belt. Well, a brother of my friend, who is a senior, decided to put me in a headlock from behind. I elbowed him in the face and then he smiled and laughed, then left me alone. The next day, we were in the band room with a group of guys and he said he wanted to fight. I said I didn't want to fight an immoral battle so after a group of guys surrounded us he pushed me. In my school, even if your hit first, you still get suspended for fighting. Well, I still don't think thats right so I defended myself and luckily, he didn't even touch me but he ended up with a bleeding lip. The next day, the whole school knew and treated me like a celebrity. thats not really something to be proud of. About 2 weeks later, some tae kwon do kid started punching me on the bus so I preceded to block. About five minutes later, I had my hand on my shoulder and this girl clawed me in the back. I turned and without any force or direction, I supposedly hit her with my elbow. I said I was sorry and asked someone to see if she was ok, because I had to get off. Her family is the kind that sues or tells the appropriate officials about anything possibly harmful or illegal. I thought nothing off it. The next day, the principal calls me to his office. Apparently, her dad called and some kids said I was "showing off kung fu and I hit her" Well, I didn't tell him I didn't take kung fu but swore that I would never do any attack without a reason and I did not purposely hit her, if at all. He then asked if I apologized, I said that I did, and he let me go without a punishment. I later found out that the tae kwon do person who was punching me said that he didn't think I hit her and that I wouldn't do it on purpose and said I was sorry. But he told his class that I did punch her so after clearing my name, I told some of my friends about this. What do you guys think about the fighting suspension thing? Is it ok to fight in defense if you can't get away? Any advice in general? I know it sounds fishy.......

I personally don't think the belt matters, the ability of the person does. I have a slight disgust with 8 year old black belts who think they can beat up anyone because the have a piece of black cloth. They may know moves but lack power or form.

You guys may remember a message I posted about my friends bashing karate. Well, a few days ago, I was talking to a fellow martial artist about a seminar and we were discussing our arts when one of the kids who talked about how stupid karate was but in and said "Ross' dojo is really neat and has all this gymnastic equipment and foam pits...etc" you see, our dojo shares a building with a gymnastic place and his sister went there so I guess he tagged along. Then he began to brag, once again, about how his dad was good in kung fu and how he knew how to use nunchuks. I proceded to roll my eyes. Did he but in to act like he knew what we were talking about or did he just want attention? (oh, my name is Ross, thus explaining "Ross'dojo) Karateka Aikidoist

Guy slays fellow employees at a Savon in Irvine California.
KaratekaAikidoist replied to Treebranch's topic in General Chat
Well, You'd think someone would try to get a weapon withing the store. Like a broom or something. If the guy didn't really know what he was doing, you could prolly stop him. *anybody want to start a nation with an army comprised of Martial Artists? Instead of guns, we have swords and such. I apologize if this breaks forums rules. I get to be president! lol -
Ok, thanks everyone. Lets broaden this to general sparring tips for big or small people.

I don't want to fight him because your not supposed to do that. My sensei doesn't notice him doing anything abnormal. This guy does all of his techniques really hard. Ex. He smashes my head against his chest but he calls it "controlling". Whenever I try to do techniques strong, I'm told not to muscle it. Its really confusing.

We recently had a new person join my aikido class. He's been involved for about 2 tests and likes to "ruin" my aikido techniques by rolling out of them or reversing them. I figured it may have been just because he's new, but I always thought practice was for practice, not a time to show off and see if you can embarrass people. He also pulls sneak attacks on me and never fails to tell me if I have bad form on a technique. I also regarded this as his new expierience in MA. I later learned that he was in another style beforehand, not very far alone, but nonetheless........... Is this behavior considered ok? I can take criticsicm but not the way he shows it. I don't want to learn the "right way" to do a technique from someone who hardly knows it himself.

I've taken karate for five years but I'm generally small and usually faced against taller, stronger and faster opponents (adults). Me being 14, I find it hard to match them in sparring unless they are my size or close. Does anybody have any tips to help me "remedy" this?

Ninja Scroll
KaratekaAikidoist replied to diamondick's topic in Martial Arts Gaming, Movies, TV, and Entertainment
I remember watching it when I was seven and when I turned fourteen, I found it and bought it. I don't get why the Kounuchi didn't use the knife on the guy raping her while he wasn't in rock form. I thought It was a cool movie with all the fighting and ninja scenes. -
I partially agree. Kata application can become outdated as well. For instance, one of my kata's has an attack meant to break through bamboo armor. Well, I don't know too many people that wear bamboo armor. And with kumite, most attackers aren't going to attack with an inside out cresent kick or a reverse roundhouse. Ciao

Well, It takes a lot of courage to apologize, especially to someone you probally won't see ne way.

I just came here after getting karate bashed by my aunt and grandpa. The say that MA are useless because "of a little invention called the gun". I said that the person would have to get the gun out in time and they said "Thats why there's so little Kung Fu guys because karate can't help you dodge bullets" Well, Karate and Kung Fu are different, so they showed their own stupidity. Anybody have comments, stories,"solutions"?

Is archery a fighting art?
KaratekaAikidoist replied to KaratekaAikidoist's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
My idea of a fighting art is something that has a history of being practiced and studied for the purpose of war or fighting. I want to know this because the main reason I am taking it is to extend my Martial Arts expierence although a plain bow is not art by itself. -
Well, before I can help, I need a thourouh explaination.

Yeah but sticks were used to kill people way back when. I'm not sure if thats a yes or a no. (no rudeness meant) -

Very interesting. Those look almost like fantasy style blades. -
The closest dojo out of the ones you gave me is about 45 miles. I have dojo's near here but none of them are ninjutsu and thats what I'm looking for. There is only my dojo and one more. They are 20 miles apart distance wise. I read somewhere that to make a metsubishi, you hollow an egg and fill it with "stuff" (I don't want to say because we may get some people who could hurt others) I'm not trying to "brag" that I know, I was interested if dojo's stay traditional with powders and distraction devices.

Nobody had another secret testing. My sensei drives me to another place and then they conduct "ninja tests" as they call them. I just want to know I'm gonna test because I'm starting in Aikido and I want to practice slightly. I don't know 25 % of it because I'm testing 3 months early.

I've heard that Kusara Kama's are hard to find. I also think its an interesting weapon. Equal only to the sword. (well, gun of course)

My sensei tested me on my Aikido test and I didn't know that he was. I take that back, my dad told me that my sensei said something to him,but was told not to tell me. I'd been practicing Aikido for 4 years but was not able to test because of my age. I was told the reason I didn't know is because my sensei didn't want to stress me more.(my black belt test was in a week). My mom told me he was going to test me secretly again, on saturday. Why does my sensei not tell me? I think I should know when I'm gonna test. It makes me feel like just because I'm a black belt in another style, I don't need to practice techniques before a test. It doesn't anger me, just it's kinda strange. Any thoughts?
