  1. You read too much into what I'm saying I said "Wado... he never said those exercises were useless, just that they don't teach timing. And no, none of those exercises that you listed teach any sort of timing." I never said karate has no timing or old senseis had no timing... In fact I'm sure karateka of old did drills to improve their timing. So maybe they have timing, maybe they don't, but it sure isn't because of kata.

  3. Just stand your ground and counterattack... a few controlled strikes always beats a flurry of wild ones. Also, I've noticed that simply throwing a jab at them as they charge usually stops them.
  4. Interesting, considering that free-sparring has little relation to actual self defence. I think free sparring at an early stage can actually decrease one's ability in a self-defence encounter, due to an over-reliance on high kicks and tournament technique. I don't think the phrase "freestyle practice" implies high kicks and tournaments...
  5. it depends on why you are in the school.... if you are there for fun and fitness its fine.. but if you want to learn some combative skills some form of freestyle practice is a must...
  6. Wow you're pretty small for your age... lol.. i am 16 and i weigh only 5 pounds less than you
  7. where do wing chun fighters get power for their techniques, especially chain punching? Whenever I see wing chun people punching, they are punching rapidly but this doesn't seem to allow much body movement.
  8. It would be great if you did
  9. I have a problem when I'm sparring... when I see punches coming towards my face I tend to look away and move my head back a lot causing me to be off balance and in a bad position... Are there any good methods to correct this? thanks
  10. Yes, I know my profile says I do Kung Fu, and I do. A few months ago, I started taking Shotokan at my local chinese community center for fun and exercise (in addition to kung fu). I now know Heian Shodan. So.. what are some of the applications that you learned or came up with for the moves?
  11. What do you recommend I do to get lots of functional strength without too much bulk (kind of like bruce lee... good physicque but not too big... and lots of strength and speed)? I heard that bodybuilding is very detrimental to martial arts because the muscles are usually more showy than functional. Thanks.
  12. wait, someone already said that
  13. I'm not pro-boards, but the boards dont hit back argument is dumb. Dummies dont hit back. Neither do bags. Anyway, I may be wrong but I'm pretty sure that breaking is a modern introduction to popularize karate through sporting events/demonstrations and to impress non martial-artists. Board breaking might have some limited uses, but I don't really think it was designed to be really useful. I think it's better just to practice on a heavybag... you can get more power and work on combinations as well.
  14. Wow. I guess you didn't get the joke. That's ok.. I'll be less subtle next time Good one! *sarcasm*
  15. Leave... you should never pay to be physically and verbally abused by an instructor.
  16. Not only is that skill completely useless compared to other training devices(bags etc.), but I find it odd that you imply that only a good karate-ka will be able to do it. I'm sure that anyone can do it given a month or so to practice it. P.S. - Did traditional karateka of old break boards? Just wondering... Insults? I'm not even going to sink to that level. I don't come to this board to have people tell me how shallow my knowledge is. Also, I said "Not only is that skill completely useless compared to other training devices(bags etc.), but I find it odd that you imply that only a good karate-ka will be able to do it. I'm sure that anyone can do it given a month or so to practice it. " but your reply doesn't seem to have much to do with what you are replying to. I said the skill was useless, not you. And when I said "you", I was clearly ( if you read the context) referring to your implication, not calling you odd. Even if I did insult you which I didn't, it doesn't give you any reason to retaliate with insults of your own. About the second part (about the part with and equivalent MA), well I obviously missed it. No, I haven't tried it and I don't think that I have to punch a piece of paper to know that there are more effective means to gain skill.
  17. Um, that's completely wrong... Just because someone doesn't like breaking doesn't mean they are not good at it. Maybe they got good at it and discovered it wasn't helpful?
