  1. I have not met her, but I could not find the thread on actors who also practice MA. Katheryn Winnick. Currently, she plays Lagartha on Vikings. Silver medalist in the Canadian National TKD Finals. Started her first Dojo at 16, expanded to 3. 3rd Dan TKD BB 2nd Dan Karate (not sure which style).
  2. This will be interesting. I think Mayweather will win.
  3. No apology necessary
  4. Kokutsu Dachi is the same in Shotokan.
  5. Wives are usually right! My feeling is they rushed the production. There was plenty of time for back story to be told. Oh, well. Both Defenders and the Punisher are supposed to be out this fall. Vikings season 5 should be out this fall too.
  6. Have you ever watched "Babylon 5"? I am also a sci-fi and fantasy geek.
  7. Do you know where he learned these weapons? Hanbo and Katana I can see since this is a Japanese art. Bo is the first weapon taught in Kobudo and the Nunchaku is probably the most popular do to Bruce Lee. Did he learn these weapons from one of his teachers or outside of Shotokan? I am not sure where he learned them. I admit that I am not very knowledgeable about the full curricula and histories of each art. I tend to focus my training and study on the immediate needs of my current requirements. I do know he has been studying martial arts since he was a kid in Dominica (30+ years). I know he as done a fair amount of cross training, but in what exactly, I am not sure.
  8. The way I have heard "turn the other cheek" interpreted is more of a response to insult rather than an attack. A Roman would not have punched a slave or other considered less than a Roman. They would have slapped them. At least that is what I have read. A punch would have been the cultural acknowledgement of equality. A back-handed slap with the right hand would land on the right cheek. As far as defense of self or others, Christ told his disciples to "sell their cloak if they did not have a sword". At that point he was sending them into the world to preach and knew how dangerous traveling was.
  9. My Sensei (shotokan with jujitsu, and judo) teaches hanbo, bo, nunchucks and Samurai Sword.
  10. If you win the lottery you can hire movers. Or just keep you most treasured items and get all new at the new place delivered.
  11. I used to be a SCUBA instructor. We saw the same thing. In the 1970's, earning your certification took effort and strong swimming ability. Now it can be done in a weekend. When I first got certified I had to go to a classroom and then confined and open water work. Now the classroom portion can be done online, but you still have to show up for confined and open water. Oh, and not so strong swimming ability. The watering down of curriculum is through all society now, especially recreational activities. I bet in the 1970s there were a segment of people who trained in the 1930s and 1940s lamenting the watering down of curriculum even then. "You have it easy. My Sensei made us ..."
  12. For the most part I don't drink. I don't have time to even think about it. Since I work 3p-11p I don't drink before work and just want/need to sleep after work. I do like the occasional beer or 2 though. I have some beer in my fridge that has been there for over a year.
  13. I do not wish to bash someone I do not know so therefore I will refrain from divulging names. I am sure if you watch enough of these ""bunkai"" video's you will figure it out for yourself. Funny thing is I was actually looking up Bai He Quan applications and Lohan Quan applications when I discovered a multitude of Bunkai for many of the Kata that I train in. Curiosity killed the cat so to speak and four hours later I feel dumber for it. I know how much of a time suck YouTube can be. I have lost hours on Honest Trailers and How it Should have Ended from time to time.
  14. It looks like the data sample was large enough and the time frame long enough that idiosyncrasies of a smaller population would be weeded out. You certainly can be overweight and athletic. I have seen big guys do crazy things. But the study is probably correct. Excess fat deposits around internal organs are not a good thing.
  15. Often this is caused by trying to move to quickly or forcing the movements. Some movements are foreign and because of this there become forced. The key is practice and more practice until it becomes natural. Think of an infant trying to walk for the first time. The leg muscles, joints and tendons are not accustomed to this action so the balance is not there and thus it is foreign. The more you do something the more it becomes a natural movement for the body. The tendons are stretched, muscled become accustomed and the build to support the joints. Balance is achieved and the movement becomes second nature. Don't try to force it or move too quickly. Practice the movement until it becomes a natural movement and you will be able to do it without thinking about where the foot lands and how far the leg has to travel. Also, and of course depending on your style, do not over extend. The more natural the stance the more balance there is and the easier to achieve the movement. I would suggest figuring out exactly where the leg must be and the foot must land and have a partner put a piece of tape on the ground for both feet. You can practice this until your foot hits the exact placement every time so that muscle memory is developed. Then you can throw the tape away and move on to the next movement that you are having difficulty with. That would be my advice for what it's worth. Thanks for the advise. I will use it.
  16. Would it be appropriate here to name names? I have been watching videos occasionally. I consider myself a beginner/novice. I have also used videos to work on my kata to get correct sequences.
  17. If I lived closer I would help you move.
  18. "Since I'm no longer the current Kaicho of the SKKA/Hombu, then I've no idea what I'm going to do financially for an income. I could become a Wal-Mart greeter! Nonetheless, I'll deal with that once I return to Owasso, OK. One fire at a time!! My Cardiologist will be referring me to Dr. Darwin Childs, Tulsa, OK for continuing care, so on and so forth. I'll be returning to Dr. David Moon, Tulsa, OK as my PCP. But until I secure either of these doctor's, I'll be a patient of the P.A.L. program out of the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa, OK.
  19. Thanks very much. I have to say since I started, I have improved. I can do it without falling over. Now it is just a matter of retraining the bad out. I will also focus more on keeping the hips level.
  20. Choose whichever Sensei will be the best fit.
  21. I am sorry to hear about the circumstances regarding the move. However, I am happy that you are going home. I will have to put it on my list of destinations to visit so maybe I could train with you, or at least buy you a salad (I know you are eating healthy).
  22. Sometimes I have a problem on the 270 degree turns to the back. I don't get my leg far enough over to be in a back stance. I am working on it though. I am taking some advise from recoil junkie. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. http://recoiljunkie.com/no-really-slow-is-smooth-smooth-is-fast/
  23. I am avoiding the trailer. I do not want to be spoiled.
