  1. I like to focus on the techniques that are required for my belt, getting them as good as possible and only then will I grade. Unless there are other factors involved. Quality not quantity, thats my rule.
  2. i've just been having a similar argument about this with tobias. You can go down as a 2nd dan, you can display the belt, but at the end of the day, if you are cr*p, you will have no respect and if asked to demonstrate your skills you will told you dont deserve the belt and people wont think much of you. If like Funakoshi, you choose to focus on quality rather than going up belts as fast as possible, you will earn respect and admiration because you should be extremely good. There is no point in going for a belt if you dont feel you are ready for it.
  3. Blue Dragon, outside the dojo age usually defines superiority. Inside, age has no bearing on who is the superior. If a 16 year old black belt is at a competition, then they have the right to order a 40 year old orange belt around. Unfortunately, adults have problems accepting this, and this is one reason I refuse to take an instructors / coaching course, as I could be asked to teach parts of lessons and the adults in the room dont like being taught by someone younger than them unless they are a black belt. -- for people who are familiar with the dojo I go to this includes Tobias, Kristina and Danielle. Adults have to let go of their instincts to be superior over kids while in the dojo. (I know this is off topic, but blue dragon made an issue of age in his post)
  4. Why thank you. Also, talkikng about swimming, my swimming instructor used to say to run up and down the stairs 40 times a day. This can result in death .
  5. Thanks for correcting me there, I was unsure whether the lack of platelettes was due to a direct influence or due to the asprin affecting the hyperthalumus and thus the amount of ADH leading to water diluting the blood. What are you, a doctor?
  6. Apparantly I look like John Lenon. I resent that.
  7. is it 100 posts you need for orange?
  8. Asprin thins the blood, and in large doses (20 at a time or so) can cause stomach damage. Half an asprin a day is reccomended for prolonged use. It makes life easier for the heart as the blood is thinner, and is now being prescribed for heart attack prevention. Note that prolonged use can affect the body's ability to clot, as the substance needed for clotting is in less concentration due to the thinning of the blood. I would guess that the blood thins due to more water being re-absorbed by the kidneys, so more pressure would be put on them too. I'm not sure about the effects of more ADH in the blood, but it's naturally occuring so i dont think it would affect the body in any way. [Please note that this could be a complete pile of arse.] Note how "arse" hasnt been censored... te he, i beat the system. (I bet it gets censored now, so i look like a fool for writing all this)
  9. My self defense techniques include: Groin kick/knee Run That's all there is too it. Unless youre against a cricketer.
  10. Remeber, with the McDojo, you can Go Large* and go up two belts instead of one ® © for 30p. *At participating Dojos only. 50p more above 3rd Kyu. Belts must be purchaced separatly. McDojo Dojos can not be held responsible for any injuries sustained.
  11. Maybe some people dont practise karate to help them with street fights??? Angus? I have only used karate outside the dojo once, and that was because people were trying to drag one of my friends away to force him to play football (he doesnt like football) and we had a bus to catch. I kicked one persons hand away, sweeped him. The other guy sweeped another person and pushed another (who lost balance and fell to the ground) the remaining person walked off muttering. We caught the bus in time. I did not think about kata or karate in any way, it was all instinctive. Kata is there for mental discipline and practising the ART of karate. It also helps to develop techniques and stances in a semi realistic environment. Quite frankly I hope I dont have to use anything I have learnt to truly defend myself in the future. I like my face the way it is.
  12. The best way to improve your fitness is to push yourself WAY past your limits. You should have no legs left afterwards... People will tell you this is dangerous, and it can be if you arent sensible. Do it in the evening, avoid lactic acid buildup as much as possible by breathing heavily. If you had longer I would suggest breathing excersises to increase lung capacity and improve aerobic respiration efficiency, but there's not enough time left for them to have enough effect. After pushing yourself dont collapse onto the floor. Make yourself walk around slowly to get the blood flowing through your muscles and breath deeply. Stretch off as well, to help prevent sore muscles. I dont think weights will help anything but strength, as there's not much to it except strength. Cycling machines and rowing machines at your local gym will help too. Anything that uses every muscle in your body. (other excersises would be reccomended, put patrick would have to censor the post ).
  13. During most lessons i hardly sweat at all. Only when it's really hot I do. Humidity has an affect on my performance. Submission fighter: dont be getting thrills from reading this thread, I dont think patrick would approve of one handed typing in this forum.
  14. I agree with angus. I'm told i know a lot about computers, but what the soiled trousers is an SQL database???? HUH? As you're so smart, you can tell me what IP stands for.
  15. If you dont like him, call in health and safety (or whatever it's called in america). By hitting a student with intention to mame or injure is clased as GBH under UK law, methinks i'm sure america has it's equiv.
  16. Ohhhh, no I dont want any full contact, but anyone who wants to back out of a competition because they were winded is really foolish. I get winded on a regular basis by kristina and danielle when sparring with them. I ignore it and carry on to the best of my ability. Saying someone injured you because you were winded is quite unbelievable. I dont like sparring at all, but I do it and have my arse seriously kicked on a regular basis. I would like to point out that i am personally in favour of moving away from full contact and "old school" styles of teaching. It puts less strain on the NHS.
  17. Quite frankly, even though i dont enter competitions, saying you cant continue because someone has winded you is PATHETIC. It takes a min or two to recover and then carrying on is no problem. A lot of the time this is due to people trying to remove the competition... it's a shame to think that the martial arts can be corrupted in this way. I dont think the martial arts is becomming "soft", it's just some poeple are choosing to move away from the old school methods of training, where only light contact is acceptable.

  19. PortAdian, Have you ever been hit by nunchaku?! For the purposes of this post, i'm going to pretend that i have. Trust me, they can do a lot of damage. Ok, so they're a blunt weapon, but the momentum and speed they carry can cause a lot of damage. Imagine being hit by several small baseball bats, also the chain can be used to cut off circulation to the brain... 15 seconds to unconciousness, a few more to brain damage, a few more to death... Ouch.
  20. I would have said "here's 5001" but that's just seeking a cheap laugh... Also, what's this picture meant to be? :pony: What's that behind him? A pen.... cil? This Message was edited by: ts757 on Aug 19, 2001 1:39pm
  21. I've voted for sai, because you can conceal it up your sleve, until sutch a time as you can stab your opponent in.... vital areas.
  22. If I had been training normally, then my injury would have most likey worsened to the point where it would have a) required hospital treatment b) been damaged to such a level where it would have prevented karate training all together. Considering the circumstances, I think I kept training adequately so as not to get too out of practise. Also, you have to consider that I've just done my GCSE's which lasted several weeks, and I needed the time for revision -- noting that i did go on fridays during that period. Also, the comment : "So now i'm going to donn my gangster hat and cap the thug who did it." was a JOKE. I have no intention of getting revenge on the "nasty black belt" as I relise that he was excerising his method of training. It is unfortunate that he decided to practise it using a dangerous technique. So now, If you dont mind, I'm going to donn my clown hat and smile rediculously at the neighbours .
  23. It's true, he's a walking cripple. His nose has been broken so many times he can take it off and travel with it in his pocket... The only injury i've sustained (that's worth mentioning) is my shoulder. It was yanked round with a fair bit of speed. It's been a year now and i'm just getting back to training normally. So now i'm going to donn my gangster hat and cap the thug who did it.
