4. how do you escape from a headlock? .................................................. Try a hip toss or an arm bar.
-
The double blocks(outside blocl and down block done at the same time) seems to be a counter to the UEchi-ryu Wauke(strike to the shoulder and hip at the same time). Both systems have them in it alot. Maybe they saw eachother doing it and decided to counter the moves.

i don't condition hardly at all and i am doing fine in TKD. i guess if you feel like doing it, do it. ........................................................ Why not condition? Do you wear pads? Conditioning is probaly the easiest training ctaegory in MAs, why not do it?
-
I practice Konigun Ninjutsu myself. ................................. Intresting, so you do you work on a lot of grappling?
-
hey! i do kyokushin karate .............................................. Heck yeah, another good Karate style. I am moving to arizona in the fall and there is a Kyokushinkai karate school in that town. i think i may end up taking kyoshin. Any tips on how to see the quality of a Kyoshin dojo?

Uechi-Ryu ................................................ RF_Brown, Right on! What Uechi-ryu faction are you in?
-
I take uechi-ryu karate. I used to take Shorin-ryu.

okay, yea, umm, about that, you see, what were doing now?....yea, thats not cheerleading, nah-ah, nope, no, thats actually more like critisising. yea. nice shot though, good effort, good effort uhh, cheerleading is actually a bit more...how can i put this...POSITIVE! I already know everything people think is bad about shotokan thats not why i started this thread! ........................................... Maybe there are few redeeming values. There are many limits built into Shotokan. Maybe it was done intentionally, who really knows but the limits are there and you must deal with them. Shotokan does have some strengths, like strength. unfortuantly this leads to it's weaknesses. For instance many of the moves rely on power rather than skill.

Mark me down for goju ........................................ Heck yeah. Unfortunley, I do not hink it is a very big style in the US. how do you like Goju? I think it is a good style, because it is one of the few styles in the US to include conditioning.

What style did Itosu teach? ...................................................................... It certainatly wasn't Shotokan !!!!!!!!!
-
What style did Itosu teach? ......................................... He taught what would become kobayashi Shorin-ryu.
-
I know that about 50 million people World wide study TKD and 5million study Shotokan. But how many studt thoses arts in the US? Also how many people practice Uechi-ryu, Gojo-ryu, Isshin-ryu, Wado-ryu and so forth?
-
yes! thank you! more more more! this is a great art thats been verbaly abused to much, im sure sensai Funakoshi is rolling in his grave after all the work he did ridiculed, he needs a bigger cheerleading squad, come on all you shotokan practioners, if this style is so popular i know your out there, lets go! ............................................................... No Itosu Sensei is rolling in his grave! He taught Funikoshi something and Funi turned around and corrupted it. He did not make Shorin-ryu any better. He made it his so he would be remebered, that is why he made the pointless changes to the katas.

i really wanna learn this style.i know i am physically and mentally fit.but i don't wanna go to a dojo i have tought myself other types of karate but how can i learn this one.is their a book or website that can help me. ........................................................ Did you really learn the styles? Or can do a good impression of them? Not to knock you, but learning a style strictly though a book does not give you the skill you think you should get out of it. Why Shotokan?
-
do you spar with 100% power bare knuckle like Kyokushin does? ........................................ Well maybe not 100% but close enough.
-
okay, get this in your head, all of you. Shotokan karate is the best martial art ever created now, and always will be. nothing surpasses it and its complete in every way, including patitual lethality. .................................................. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was hilarious.

When i took Karate i was taught to keep my body straight for a sidekick. Now in TKD im (trying) to be taught to bend my body down beacause it "protects the head and lets you kick higher" i can already kick high enough with a straight body as is though. Which technique is better? ........................................................... Since I have been warned I will not belittle. The TKD sidekick is usally "chambered" or it is pulled across the body before it is extended. The problem is that this is very visable and lends to it being intercepted. The leaning back thing seems to be a little odd. Being on one foot is an unstable position to start with, why make it worse by leaning? Also it makes you suseptible to sweeps and kicks to the groin.

Shotokan vs Shorin-Ryu
panginoon replied to aes's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
I have been studying Shroin-Ryu Karate for just shy of 1/2 a year now. A co-worker of mine has just started taking Shotokan. Is there any similarity between these styles? Do they have similar lineage? I am told they both have high stances, but other than that I am not sure. Thanks ............................................................ Take out all the bunkai out of the Shorin-ryu Kata, and add pointlessly low-stances. Then stop all circular movement, and replace it with linear. Next take out all the techniques there are in Shorin and rely only on brute force. Then you will get Shotokan. Shotokan is "modified" Shorin-ryu, I studied the version Funikoshi was taught (Kobayoshi Shorin-ryu) and looking at Shotokan, I can not believe that a person would willingly destroy a system like that. -
I dont think BJJ is complete by itself, but i agre with you for the most part..striking is definetly neccesary, but to beat grappling you have to know grappling, simple as that. .......................................................... Very true, if a Karate school does not teach grappling then shame on them, because they are not teaching a compleate style. If a grappling school only teaches grappling then same to them.
-
That depends on the style of karate. The kenpo i take does teach take down defense and jj. yes they teach you jj, thats not karate .................................................................................. It could also be Tegumi, a grappling art that originated in Okinawa, and complimented Karate.
-
pangnoon-find out for yourself, I would be willing to bet a competent BJJ blue/purple belt would show you a few things .................................................. I have gone up aginst BJJ, I have lost(choked out by a gulitine) and won. they by far emphasize grappling far too much. Unless you can take a beating or get in and grapple before you get hit, grappling should be your secondary fighting style. I am not knocking grappling, in fact I am a grappler myself(greco-roman, so judo mixed in). The problem is that the MA world went from striking to grappling. There should be a happy median there somewhere. Many Karateka may not know how to deal with a strike but many BJJ do not know how to deal with a striker who can sprawl. One BJJ guy I beat, he went for a double leg take down, I sprawled and gave him a hook to the head. Then I did a flurry, put him in a headlock and took him down with an ankle pick. I lost to his friend who was a lot better. I decied to grapple and went for a double, he slapped on a gilitine and after a minute or so I blacked out. My point is that some Kararte do know how to grapple. Also you need to set up a takedown, probaly with a stike.

"I can hit you in the head a lot harder with a glove then without." I take it you do not punch much? "Can the average striker deal any punishment before a decent grappler can clinch and put them down? Question works both ways. I don't knoe enough about football to go to far, but is NFL skills and tactics really that different then lower levels?" Yes it does, they can run, pass and tackle faster farther longer. They can make plays work better than the average schmoe. it is easy to throw a punchs to knock someone out. It is not a terribly hard skill to learn. Then again Mcdojos took out tegumi.
-
right, somehow a 170 brazilian named royce managed to do it to guys who hit alot harder than you. very rarely can a pure striker knockout a good grapler before they get submitted, there is no reason to belive it would be any diffrent on a lower level. ................................................ The UFC is totally differnent than a BJJ guy with 3 years in. Professional competiton is a far cry from reality. The competeitor can do things that normal martial artsist can not even mimick. Why is a karateka a pure striker? Who said the?
-
The gloves aren't that thick. Seriously, if you are a hard hitter you will still be able to feel the knuckles. ................................................ There is still a huge difference. ALL sports gloves disperse the impact thus lessening it. I have been hit with all sorts of gloves and bareknuckles. Knuckles by far damage more than any of the gloves.

How can I find out if there are any BJJ schools in my area? ........................................... Try looking at martialinfo.com usadojo.com and dojolist.com
