  1. ok...here is the point in karate. If you want to ground fight you have to get me there. If you want to grab me and throw me....try....if you want to tackle me....try. If your karate school is not teaching self-defence or whatever find another. If you are good at something, it is only because you know your weaknesses and what everyone else sees. You must be able to counter what someone may throw at you. If you cannot then we have discussions like this one. ....................................................... *Cough* Karate HAS a grappling system!!!! The mcdojos like to pretend it did not exist, it is called Tegumi. So knock that "Karate does not deal with grappling" crap out.
  2. Funi ruined karate. Simple as that. In order to get real bunkai out of Shotokan, you basically have to turn it into Shorin-ryu.
  3. There are many other fighters that are at the top of their game. The difference is that they do ameture tornuments and things like that. I've started to look at UFC more like entertainment. And when I wath UFC the only stuff I see is people taking them to the ground, and pounding them. ............................................................................................... Right, can the average BJJ practitioner take the punishment from an average striker, to get the takedown? What I am saying is that this is not reality, just like the NFL is not either. These people are just to good to compare tactics to the ordinary. They also use gloves, granted it still hurts when hit, but it pales in compariosn to a bareknuckled hit.
  4. Good topic. Uechi-ryu is: 1) Groundwork-1 2) Trapping-1 3) Infighting- 4 4) Punching-5 5) Kicking -1 6) Weapons-0 Uechi-ryu is a very in close style of fighting, liked to Wing Chung. The kicks are about as "good" as TKD's punches Shorin-ryu is: 1) Groundwork-2 2) Trapping-1 3) Infighting- 2 4) Punching-4 5) Kicking -2 6) Weapons -1 Shorin-ryu is more rounded art. Although the kicks are still crappy, compared to TKD.
  5. I disagree, they used to, but not anymore. Now they favour a ground and pound style ........................................................................ You missed my point. The fightrs of the UFC and Pride are at the top of their game. While most people are not. Therefore UFC is only an indicator of hat the fighter is capable of at their highest potential.
  6. Two ways to get over your fear. One is to desensitize yourself. Imagine the even in as clear detail as you can. Do so often, plus get your self to spar. Hopefully you will slowy be able to get over your fear. The other way? Suck it up, soldier on.
  7. The UFC is still a sport. It has rules. The rules tend to favor a grappler. ........................................................ Not only that. The UFC gets the best MArists from around the world. It the art in its' best form. These guys train harder and longer than most of us. They can take and give far more punishment than we can. I would like to see a BJJ practitioner take a couple of hits from me, then do a take down, and ground work, while I am giving them a concussion. These new styles are partially so great becasue they attract sports fighter at the top of their game, who are looking for something new and that hasn't been done before.
  8. .......................................... Dang straight. Shotokan is corupted Shorin-ryu. Goju is avery well taught style in the US, why not take it?
  9. i think your bjj premotion requirments are cool. i know it can get fustrating not being promoted but you'll really earn it when you do! ....................................................... Heck yeah! I do Uechi-ryu karate, and the average time to BB(7 years) is less than the BJJ's 10 years, but the BBs really do EARN it. If you can get a BB in 2 years than you probaly don't deserve the title.
  10. In my school, the time period varies for each belt level...As you advance in rank, it takes longer to advance to the next belt...To advance from white belt to yellow belt, it takes 1 month...(If it took over 4 months, this would discourage students. Their excitement for the martial arts could prematurally die.) anyway, how long does a student have to stay in each belt; in order, to advance? .......................................................... Why even have a "next belt" if they get a new one in a month? Have they learned that much in that small time period to warrent a promotion? You don't wan tyour students to get discouraged at the white belt level, what about the black Belt level? Should they get their BBs in 2 years, because you don't want them qutiting on you? I say at LEAST 3 months between the lower belts.
  11. The limits of Full Contact: Having to wear 16 ounce gloves. ................................. You wear gloves while doing full contact? It may lead to bad habbits, such as not conditioning your knuckles, hitting with the 3 knuckles, which leads to a boxers break. Also the full contact with gloves skews reality. A bareknuckle hit hurts far more than a gloved punch.
  12. Why on Earth would you want to take the original Mcdojo Style? [edit] Dependence on rigidity and strength, which leads to a lack of technique. Take Goju, just becarful, and not do Sanchin too hard.
  13. I saw the site. It makes it seem very mcdojoish. Anything else you could tell me?
  14. Hapkido, by a long shot. It is a well rounded style. It uses strikes, take downs and grappling. While Shotokan, relys far too much on strength to make a move effective. The stances are too low to be practical. Funikoshi took all the bunkai out of the kata. basically Shotokan is self limiting.
  15. My friend goes to a gym with a Seido Karate school in it. My question is what is Seido Karate? What katas does it have? Waht is the lineage? What does the style emphasize? Waht are the strengths and weaknesses? If you tell me, it devlops your mind and body BS I will rough you up
  16. I took Shorin-ryu for two years. There are no low or wide stances in it. The weaknesses of Shorin-ryu are: -Have trouble defending aginst low-kicks. Even though it teches to kick low. -Moving to the outsie of a Shorin-ryu fighter, thats there turf. I am currently taking Uech-ryu. I have not been able to exploit many weaknesses on my fellow Karateka. Although Uechi-ryu does not have as many techniques as Shorin-ryu.
