Woot woot!!! -
I agree that a black belt is just one of many more milestones and was going to post something grumpy like "why should a black belt need to be motivated, if they can't motivate themselves then that may be the beginning of the end for them!" And then I saw the post above. It's perfectly reasonable and made me think, perhaps black belts need further motivation too! Good topic!

This is a tid bit of tremendous wisdom. Training outside of the dojo is wonderful as long as it is properly done. Solid post !

Excellent advise. During a recent injury I was out for several weeks and with permission I attended class and simply watched. It was a great way to stay in touch and to learn. I also agree with Sensei8, NEVER train without your doctor's consent. Remember, your personal health is a big part of any martial art. Knowing when not to train, or to take it easy, is just as important as actively training.

******BEGIN DRUM ROLL****** -
Yes...the felled opponent also darn near landed on top of the kickers HEAD!! To risky for me to ever want to try it on the streets; to many things can go wrong for me!! Looks great when it works, but ugly when it doesn't. Nah, I'll stay away that kick. Spar against a Kyokushin practitioner...stay aware...it's not a question of "IF", but more of "WHEN"...it will be tried!! Impressive kick!!! My biggest concern is that if you miss you end up on the ground in a very vulnerable position. The technique is no less impressive however and in my opinion is ideal for a ring sport where no ground fighting is allowed. Otherwise on the street or in MMA - USER BEWARE!!!

My sentiments exactly!!!

WELCOME!!! and yes it's normal. You have to walk a fine line of pushing yourself to new limits AND listening to your body so that you avoid potential injury. Push gently and intelligently - and most importantly have fun !!!

I agree with you sensei8 although in my opinion yelling and condescension are unacceptable IN ALL WALKS OF LIFE. It's all about The Golden Rule.

Leslie Smith's Exploding Ear, UFC 180

I completely agree but the problem is that referees are human too. I've seen fights stopped way too early and have seen fights allowed to go far too long. -

Does your school advertise prices?
Archimoto replied to Lupin1's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Solid!! Ad space is precious and a school may prefer to pitch or convey something other than cost at first. This approach tends to sell 'value' and oftentimes the sell is at a higher price point than the competition's. Can't fault a school - or any business for that matter - for trying to make money. The question in my mind is always the quality of the instruction as well as the cost of the instruction. These are two separate things so a school that is trying to make more money is not necessarily a McDojo. Just like a cheap school is not necessarily a good school. -
With MT rules specifically I think if you stay inside, and if this guy is any good, he will eat you up in the clinch with knees and elbows. I know this from personal experience being 5-10 myself and competing against someone 6-6 in an open tournament. That is exactly where this guy wants you. If his skill level is low I agree stay inside but if he's any good you'll have to manage the ring, MOVE a ton and stay off the ropes, and keep working your speed at long range moving in and out attacking his legs. WEAR HIM DOWN. Remember, at 6-8 he'll have tremendous leverage if he gets you in a clinch, you could easily get tko'd with a knee to the solar plexus, stay outside and use your speed. I highly recommend working your cardio between now and then too because you have to be highly active against everyone but especially someone that is much bigger than you. Hope this helps!!! Let us know how it goes!

Well said!!! I completely agree although I'll admit there are times when I have mixed feelings on the subject. For example, years ago we had a very obese student and our Sifu "auto-graded" him twice in his first year to keep him coming back because not coming back posed a serious health risk to this individual. Looking back I respect my Sifu for his decision and it truly helped this individual stick with it. There have been a few other instances where auto grading was truly beneficial, otherwise, I find en masse auto grading quite loathsome.
