  1. Who said they cant kick?
  2. I am glad someone recognizes the power of Greco Roman. Well, when I heard it Johnny, I was like "man, that sounds nifty.. Ilike that", however, I just changed it a lil bit, shortended it up... still the same effect =).
  3. Johnny? How many streetfights have you been in. I really question your exp here in that matter. The way your talking, you act as if a streetfight starts by someone coming up and just start fighting someone. IN rare occasions that does happen. In a real.. out and about real world fight... something is exchanged to create heat. Maybe words, Maybe body language, maybe a throw beer bottle.. but there is time to recognize your surrondings and prepare yourself. If someone was showing an ounce of hostility, I would get to where i NEED to be and be ready for movement. As far as you have one chance to knock him out... how do you figure? The guy shoots in.. you dodge? Are you implying that someone in TKD is to slow to skip back a few feet again before he can shoot in again? Is this that JJ mentality where they can do anything? TKD .. or at least at our dojo, we are trained to be QUICK and fast on our feet.. we do the whole jumprope thing and everything. Maybe someone who uses hard stances, would have a harder time moving out of distance again, but we bounce around, like Bruce Lee did, to stay loose, and to move around more freely and quickly. As for it being in a contest setting, your right. If it was a real street fight, I would use whatever I could... besides my legs... if I had to hit the guy with a Cement block, I would. On the street is real no holds barred, and from previous as.s whoopings, and giving out as.s whoopings, the stakes are to high to try and show your the man at your style, anyone who does is foolish. Even the common joe american with a Dagger hidden would fuk up a JJ artist. Nick
  4. Fred was probably in the ring because he is Titos friend?? Didnt someone say that Tito pointed out into the crowd and then Fred came along? Creed singer challanged Fred to a charity boxing match, because Fred was talking all kinds of crap about the guy from Creed on stage at one of his concerts. Needless to say, Fred wimped out and didnt accept
  5. Now hold on JJF... a lil back, we were talking about greco roman wrestling, and you commented about how Gracie beat severn... a suggestion perhaps that BJJ is better then Greco Roman.. so with Kimura beating Gracie, perhaps I can suggest then , that Judo is better then BJJ... using your logic and philosphy of course
  6. I wish to open a debate about.. why MA has gotten a bad rap in america. I think one of the reasons is.. because anyone can be an instructor. In Korea, you can not teach TKD until you are at least 4th Dan, here, as soon as you turn BB, people open a Dojo. This leads to inferior training of how the art should really be taught. Second, As I stated before, I think alot of people are lazy.. they dont take it as serious as some of the Asians or other countries.... kinda like a fly by night thing for us, like a lot of other items. Third.. and most importantly... I keephearing stories about how this karate guy or this TKD person got there butt kicked and how there styles suck. No. the style does not suck.. Karate has always been a very powerful style.. and TKD has always been known in the orient as a lethal art due to its powerful and quick kicks. Its the people who practice them that make them inferior. One of the reasons for them losing in REAL fights, is because I truly believe they are weak and soft. Not many people I know.. will take the time to do physically conditioning or some serious workouts to tone and toughen there body.... which they should. Do you think when people practiced these martial arts back in the day, they were soft?? They were subjected to alot of physcial conditioning, because being in good shape was part of the art itself. Alot of MAs believed that yoru mind, body and spirit had to be in balance to be the most effective. Well, part of your keeping your body in balance was being in shape. I also think they are weak. How many people do you know like to full contact spar? Oh man, I know like a handful of people who like to full contact. Everyone else are timid or scared to full contact, even with full gear on, because they dont want to get hurt, or they dont wanna take the risk of getting hit. That is why alot of dojos dont do full contact, or they only do it for select students, because they dont want people quitting. They would rater them stay and get there money, etc etc. Total Lack on the instructors part. So anyway, if these people dont like full contacting with gear on, what makes you think there gonna wanna really fight when the time comes up that they have? There gonna be scared, because they dont wanna get hit, or there soft, and I think that is why so many of them get beat. I fully expect some non full contact people to respond back and try to defend why "other" people dont like to full contact, etc etc. Nick.
  7. yes, no holds barred. My Master does not really like, nor believe in the whole point system thing that tournaments do. He likes Full Contact. The skill level of the JJ guy.. not entirely sure, didnt ask, but I imagine he wouldnt fight someone of lesser caliber. The point I am trying to make is.. if you prepare for it, you have better chances to fight it. TKD students, with all there legwork... would be almost retarded to go toe to toe and grapple with a JJ, even if the TKD guy does know some grappling.. so, we use what we can to our advantage... kicking power, kicking length, and agility. Its when people try to fight outside of there art, that they start getting in trouble...or, that is how I feel about it. Nick.
  8. SoD off.. you old Bugger Just kidding.
  9. Uhhh, Shaq is quite the student of the Martial Arts. Not sure exactly what he studies, but I do know that he does study them. As for Tito beating him... depends. Tito.. would have to get him to the ground... and I understand the whole takedown thing... but if shaq knew some counters to takedowns... with his immense strength and size... .. I dunno man. It depends on if tito could get him down. As for striking... Tito would be a moron to try and go toe to toe with him.. as Shaq has.. a wayyy unfair reach advantage and strength. Sometimes, no matter how good you are, size and str does matter. Bruce Lee even commented about how good Karaam Abdul Jabar was when they use to fight.. quite a workout for him.. as Jabar was just sooo immense. Nick D.
  10. Johnny... we do train on how to avoid grapples somewhat, do we focus on entirely? Grapples, I feel would have an easier time against other toe to toe fighters, or other styles that rely heavy on handstrikes... the closer the grappler is to you, the closer he is to taking you down. The TKD that my instructor teaches, we generally stay about 5-6 ft away from a grappler, be it Greco, JJ, etc. The reason for this is to give us time to react to there shoot in... and if possible, as we attempt to avoid, to kick. I was watching a video today of my instructor fighting a JJ fighter. He has made it a habit, since he acquired his BB to go to other schools and fight full contact, to fight outside the scope of TKD, which I think is a great idea. Anyways, in this video he was showing us the principle of keeping distance, how if we moved to within 3 ft, we were gonna go down to the mat, whether we wanted to or not. But he stayed about 6 ft away... bouncing around, ready for the JJ guy to shoot. It took about a min, as neither one wanted to attack first, and then it happened, the guy shot in.... with plenty of room between then, Master Coker skipped about a foot, maybe more back... and delivered a snap kick to the side of the guys head... teh guy dropped and tried getting back up.... a thrust kick later.. the match was over. Now, dont get me wrong, Master Coker has lost to grapplers before, but in doing so, he has learned what to do and not to do.... so now, he has a betetr chance.. and showed us, that yes, you can avoid the shoot, if your quick and aware. I fully expect JJF to reply back somehow with something alomg the lines of it was a lucky shot, or the JJ fighter, sucked etc etc. l Nick White Belt ChongDoKwan
  11. not sure I follow you??
  12. Because, i have only been going to his school for 2 weeks, and this is my first trip into TKD.. and he has not shown me any forms yet. Besides, what is wrong with wanting to learn
  13. You really think JJ is inferior to BJJ??Seriously, you think that??
  14. Tom....LOLOLOL Ok OK... as far as what kind of martial art.. it would be various ones mixed together, like a basterdized mix =). What styles would be the easiest to learn on your own (your going to use them all.. in a mix)? I would say Boxing, Some kind of Kicking style, maybe some basic to intermediate TKD kicks or MT kicks. and you would need to know a grappling art... like JJ or Greco Roman. Hmm, that would probably cover it all to make a well rounded fighter. Nick
  15. Hmmm.. the normal stretches your doing aren't making you flexible? Teh ones that your instructor showed you? If they are not, maybe your not stretching enough. When you stretch, do you stretch till the point that its uncomfortable... almost..ALMOST painful. I say almost, because if it did feel like full blown pain, then you probably tore something. Do you stretch after you train and workout? Nick
  16. Jiu-Jitsu Fighter, the project is on... hmm, how do I explain this, its on, what would happen if a group of people became isolated from the rest of the world, almost like a Mad Maxx or Waterworld type of scenario, and they wanted to learn how to defend themselves from what they could salvage from around them as far as old books, etc etc. Sounds crazy I know, but very creative lol =). Tom...... The most remarkable thing is, alot of instructor who teach self defense... use simple and basic techniques with alot of efficencey. I went to a seminar where this guy... small in size asked 3 volunteers to come up and try to hit him as hard as they could.. all 3 at the same time... just try to wail into him.. and the instructor within.. I would say 10 seconds had all of them on the mat... by doing some basic judo throws, basic JJ takedowns, and a few locks from the standing position. He later fought a Blackbelt from the local area...a 4th dan in karate, the fight lasted a lil longer, but the small instructor won again, by doing a few handstrikes (which looked powerful) followed up by a basic takedown into a armbar. Nothing to flashy.. Besides Tom, the scenario I am using, no one is trying to create a new style, there trying to create there OWN style..... like in the JKD concept and philosphy. Thanks for the answers!! Keep'em coming. Nick
  17. They do not feel the need to stroke there ego by taking someone down.. they KNOW they can take someone down. That is like asking a Shaolin Kung Fu master, why doesnt he fight in MMA events... because he doesn't need to. Why does he have to prove that he can beat someone up? Nick D.
  18. What would you do if you wanted to learn some form of fighting, and had no instructors? No boxing gyms, no martial arts, nothing. Would you A) do nothing and sit back on the couch? B) Pick up some books and teach yourself basics of different styles of fighting? and refine those basics till you have it down. (IE: Learn some basic JJ takedowns and submissons, learn some MT kicking strikes, learn Boxing, etc etc) also... what styles of combat do you think would be the easiest for one to learn on there own? As for people saying that you cant learn without an instructor....people have learned how to fight on there own, and created there own styles without having anyone show them... Okinawan Karate Masters decided one day to make a fighting art to protect themselves... and they decided to use some common weapons to go along with it... they CREATED there own art..no one showed them. Soplease, try to refrain from the simple "you cant do it without an instructor" comments. I am looking for some good answers here, my grade depends on it lol. Nick This is for a report I am doing for college. So, answers would be really helpful.
  19. Has anyone learned or taken Combat Hapkido? It sounds like a really good system. My instructor teaches, but he wants us to learn ChongDoKWan first... so I have no idea how effective Combat Hap is.. Anyone, share some personal information on it? Nick D.
  20. I understand what you are saying. ALot of people dont want to have the ART taken out of there martial art... but in all honesty, I still consider what I do an Art. Even then we do not focus that much on Forms and what have you, in our TKD class, just learning it to me is an art. Learning how to do the kicks, the breaks, throws, and yes even breaking boards. The forms and Katas, are just one side of many of Martial Arts, and people should not think of it as just 'sport'. For many Football players, playing is a Way of life for them, even though it is a sport, for many boxers, it is a way of life for them, even though they fight for sport. Fighting for sport is great, as it gives you a chance to show what you and your ART can do against others. Kinda like the Iron Chef lol they get out there once a week, and they have a cook off, to show what they and there STYLE or ART of cooking can do =). Nick
  21. Monkeygirl, You are right, every where you turn, there is MA... but that is also a bad thing. Your probably wondering, How?? Its giving alot of exporsure to MA?? Problem is, when you watch shows with MA in it or movies, the moves they do are fantastic.. and it would take people many meany years to get to that skill level. So people watch these movies with Jackie Chan, they play there lil video games with ninjas, they watch Alias do some kicks and flips.. etc etc.. they go and sign up for MA.. thinking that stuff is soooo awesome looking!!. Then reality sets in. They find out that to even learn all the basics of the MA, they have to become a Black Belt, they find out that the real advanced stuff dont come till after you make BB, they find out that there style of MA doesnt teach them what they saw on TV, they get there butt kicked by someone because they thought they could fight 10 guys like Jackie Chan can, etc etc, the list is endless. This is one of the major reasons why sooo many people quit the MA's, or quit after they get there BB. My friend went to a 9th Degree Grandmaster in TKD not to long ago (Name is Sun Tok Choe, located in lakeland, Florida.) he actually asked him if he could teach him the buddhiusts Palm, the iron palm, if he could teach him nerve blocks, etc etc.. because he sees all this stuff on TV. When the Grandmaster told him No, and when I told him No, he decided to forget it, and not even take MA... Due to the hype and over-exposure of the media and entertainment, people have an unrealistic Mindset when it comes to practing the Art. Shame... Nick
  22. Ummm, I think I understand your question, not entirely sure... I am training.... under WTF rules, ChongDoKwan style TKD. Nick
