  1. I felt this was the place to put this! Sparring at my school is something that is called "continuous sparring"! We don't do sport or "point sparring". Sometimes I wish we did because it gets rough which I hate, but it is more relevant for self defense. This is a sparring session from black belt testing. The first matchup is with a guy with a broken toe (black head gear) and the second matchup, the big guy just turned 15 a few days ago, he huge. He's also got autism, so that why he responded the way he did when he was struck in the throat! Video here... http://youtu.be/h85lwpfF-3w. Just uploaded it today, testing was a few days ago.
  2. This is one of the most reasonable answers Iv heard to this question! I attend a school where there is no set time on testing for any rank! Testings are every two months and in many cases people skip belts based on where they are at. We always train ahead, and it is extremely clear who are the more capable students, and even more clear who are the ones that PRACTICE. I'm thankful to be in a school that treats each person as an individual with his/her own abilities, learning pace, and work ethic. Many people attend schools and rarely practice, my family and myself are 6 to 7 days a week, why should we be held to testing with students who attend class 2 times a week and practice very little? The politics in martial arts are such a turn off to me, but as long as you see what really matters, then you can REALLY learn! It's not where you get the belt from, it's the person who wears it that sets the standard!!!!
  3. I am 36, I currently study a mixture of tang soo do shotokan, and boxing! Shotokan and tang soo do are almost identical but I enjoy the mix up of some of the stances and such... Anyways I practiced tae kwon do on and off for many years. Itf and wtf by the way but hold a 6th rank in wtf, main issue is I moved a lot, i was looking for a school and came across a little karate place in my area, I had been to a big we'll known tea kwon do place to talk with them and didn't care for the general attitude, but the karate place had a vibe that drew me in, the instructor was so interactive with his students, and seemed to show the techniques often, jumping kick or whatever. Sorry to ramble on about me lol but my point is that I attend the karate school even though it is different then what I knew, and had to start from scratch, the point in that is it isn't the style it's the school/teacher that are important. There's good schools and bad schools, and same goes for instructors and general vibe and attitude of the student body! Hopefully you find a school that's right for you, no matter what the style! Take care.
