  1. yea i've tried using other objects as free weights .. like a 3 gallon water bucket .. but its hard because you dont get a good grip on it and good posture for your wrists.
  2. yea but i agree with whats said earlier .. its more of man vs man than art vs art. doubt just cause some guy studyin JKD loses a match that JKD is automatically looked down on. its a lot more detailed than just tha art itself, for instance, one of tha competitors might have a higher sense of reaction or a stronger punch or wathever .. its man vs man absolutely.
  3. yea i second that personally i really do find sparring more effective but thats just me .. some others might adapt to katas more. sparrin gives you experience in a fight .. katas might give you focus and mechanics in certain moves .. both can be obtained tho.
  4. actually .. its rigan whom has the accademy in torrance. i train there. you can check out the rest of their academys on they site .. https://www.machadojj.com .. hope you liked LA
  5. 4 days a week .. 1.5 - 2 hours each session. saturday - 2 hour open mat sparring/training i cross train in karate(used to), kickboxing, and western style boxing
  6. personally i think you should try stretching before you begin class or do any kicks. it helps to warm your muscles up...im pretty sure it'd help a bit.
  7. i got NO idea if these have been posted but here they are.. "...a prince who wishes to achieve great things must learn to decieve." -the Discourses (Niccolo Machiavelli) "A corrupt and disorderly multitude can be spoken to by some worthy person and can easily be brought around to the right way, but a bad prince cannot be spoken to by anyone, and the only remedy for his case is cold." -Discourses (Niccolo Machievelli) "Since love and fear can hardly exist together, if we must choose between them, it is far safer to be feared than loved." -the Prince (Niccolo Machiavelli) "He who blinded by ambition, raises himself to a position whence he cannot mount higher, must thereafter fall with the greatest loss." Niccolo Machiavelli "If an injury has to be done to a man it should be so severe that his vengeance need not be feared." Niccolo Machiavelli
  8. BJJ ive always really enjoyed grappling .. submissions and positions alike. Kickboxing really enjoy that too .. great for keepin in shape and its widely diverse standup tactics.
  9. atama golden weave colored black it's pretty nice.
  10. yea it also deals with stand up grappling and throws too .. i believe it was developed for the special forces of russia, so it deals with defendin against weapons too, ithink, correct me if im wrong. K
  11. i dont mean to disrespect but theres a thread about aikido just a bit down from this one .. like 3 or 4 topics down. once again no disrespect intended .. just thought you'd get your answer there.
  12. yea my first submission was an armbar from the guard it was so complicated when i first learned it =\
  13. ya definitely gota second the rear naked choke my favorites include thai roundhouse kick, jab-punch combos, knees, double knee takedown, circle throw, most chokes (triangle, collar, clock, shin), bicep slicer and calf cranks are quite sexy.
  14. yea whenever i first learn a technique .. especially in bjj .. id do it constantly for at least a half hour training .. doin it slowly .. then in the meanwhile increasin the speed and accuracy. on the other hand i do think that 3,000 times is an exaggeration, it'd take forever if it was a somewhat advanced BJJ technique (im not talking about an armbar from the guard, more of an inverted omoplata-type advanced). I'd say well around 200 times is enough.
  15. yea more or less its not really so much emphasizing on kali sticks and knife fights .. it teaches you coordination with two hands .. and how to use both hands in a fight simultaneously i havent taken kali but a friend of mine has .. he can bust fast smooth moves even with both as empty hands kali and silat are both great.
  16. ah nice story man i agree wtih Kyle-san .. you should have your thought more on how much you can learn in 5 years rather than what belt you can attain in 5 years. just my two cents.
  17. im not sure if your talking about footwork routines or all in all trainign routines .. one thing is good when youg ot nothin around is to develop combinations and try to execute em slowly .. and in the meanwhile adding speed to each set .. for instance you start off with basics of a Jab-Cross combo .. then move to a Jab-Cross-FrontKick combo .. etc. for footwork id suggest jumproping .. if it hasnt been mentioned before. also .. one good footwork routine is to stand to the side of a box .. jump onto the box with both feet at the same time .. and then jump off to the box in a different direction .. do it in all 8 directions (diagonals too ^^) .. it works, even tho its prefered not to jump durin a fight. hope it helps.
  18. i did japanese karate for 7 yrs .. first degree black belt in shizukana-do ive done kickboxin .. still do routines every now and then .. and ive done american boxing now im studyin bjj ^^ its fun stuff.
  19. yea thats true .. one of the best ways ive experienced in learning BJJ techniques is to spar with someone but not full on force .. not even half effort .. just being able to flow on the ground .. its kinda hard to explain .. im not saying if he gets you into an armbar let him and tap out .. naw .. its basically just flowing with eachothers moves so that you can get used to setting up for a submission or a sweep, etc. Kinda confusing huh :\
  20. yea ive heard the same stuff heard that the knee will snap but he wont feel it till the nex day or sort. anyway .. if im ever applyin the kneebar and i put enough pressure on it and they still dont tap out .. since you have their leg already trapped i just go for a toe lock .. works usually. K
  21. one thing that really pisses me off is when you spar with someone twice your weight .. and they KNOW they're twice your weight .. but when they get you in side control or mount they put ALL their weight on you .. its like uhh ? .. on the other hand any bigger guys in here that have had experience grapplin smaller opponents and got somethin they can share? thought i oughta see the second view
  22. haha I understand that .. very well. ive done a lot of strikin since i been training, and when i started training with ground fighting and grappling, bout two years ago, i sorta tried to incorporate the two, its worked well since then last week i got kneed right under my eye .. and to the side of my head .. and whenever anyone asks i sorta go speechless .. see .. if i tell em i train bjj they'll be like Oh that UFC THING ? DAMN FOO SHOW ME A MOVE .. and i then i regret saying anything it is a hard situation.
  23. yea I do extra sparrin with friends but they still aint exactly my size anyway i know what to work on now thanks for the replies pray i get bigger..
  24. aight durin the last 15 minutes of class [bjj] .. we spar. Due to the fact im the smallest guy in the class [5'8 135lbs], people i spar against are usually at least 40 lbs heavier, and sometimes a lot taller .. and when they get to mount me or side control i have a real hard time. usually when sparrin we start off on our knees .. anyone with experience in sparrin wit someone twice your size can help on techniques that might work better with em ? thanks in advance
  25. yea i been trainin with the machados .. and tha gracie academys only 10 minutes from my house and one of rorions kids is a classmate at school .. its a small world.
