  1. I still don't understand what legs at shoulder length means. Anyone care to elaborate?
  2. That's not what I said. If you feel confident in your skills within that system then it shoudl be effective enough.
  3. Hey what's everyones opinions on karate and people with ADD? I haven't been diagnosed or anything but I do notice that I don't pay attention in shcool(which is probably natural). That's probably one of my reasons for doing karate to build up focus.
  4. I think you meant to say you've taught yourself some techniques from another styles of Karate (which?) not the whole stuff. It would take you MANY years to master them. You see, Karate is not like knitting or riding a bike, you never stop learning the stuff. There are so many things to have in mind and even when you know how to perform a technique you start learning to do it CORRECTLY, by the book. Go to a dojo. What's with everybody? Why are you affraid to go near other human beings? Karate should be learnt from a QUALIFFIED INSTRUCTOR. It's dangerous, hard, complex, you name it. Good luck and join a dojo or study with a private teacher. I could actually see not wanting to go to a dojo for fear of ridicule. A lot of the people who join MA are probably the ones that have been bullied around and haven't had a good social expirience.
  5. Well I thought I'd let you guys study a rather painful technique... http://www.tectonic.cjb.net/ouch.html
  6. To you of course. I'm trying to think of a metaphor to say what I want to say, but I can't find one, so I'll just explain it. I think that overall it truly is the fighter. Whatever karate system he can be most effective at is the most effective for him, if you want to find the most effective for you you have to be open minded and try a lot of different styles.
  7. Well I recently visited a goju-ryu dojo and asked about kobudo(weapons training stuff) and they said that all goju-ryu dojos should do kobudo, so you might want to do that.
  8. I guess you could try karate, it focus a lot on punching and strikes and they do do tornuments and a lot of dojos do weapons. So I guess you could consider that.
  9. Are plyometircs really all that importan in martil arts?
  10. Well you shoudl be able to just do it the same way you used to learn the other ones.
  11. What is everyone comparrison of karate aginst other traditional martil arts?
  12. I've already taked shudokan but I hope to also train in tall of the syles available to me.
  13. I just read an article on punch power actually. And it said the two main areas to work on was technique and abdominal(because it roates your hips), I don't think it would be too bad idea to focus on arms and chest eithe.r
  14. "Moreover, an integral componet of the "Undereating Phase" of the Warrior Diet is that it shoudl be done while you are awake" "The Undereating Phase is built on the principle of controlled fasting. It lasts for 16-18 hours after your last meal, including time you are asleep" it's very hard to understand because he says you shoudl do it while your awake but you have to sleep sometime of the day I just can't understand how the whole undereating part of it is suposed to work. Like when to start and stop. And if your supsed to do the overeating right after the undereating or what.
  15. No the warrior diet thing. I think it got cut off from the title. It says that your supose to undereat for 16-18 hours after your last meal and then I guess do the over eating thing. But I do'nt know if i'd be able to do that cause of school.
  16. Question 1: They teach stances because that stance may be the root for a lot of techniques Question 3: Because it's karate. Your suppose to be learning the art of karate, if you want street effective moves take a self defense class.
  17. False. Any authority figure shoudl know that if you say something like "I know karate" then that's just going to aggrivate the assaliant further to attack you.
  18. I've heard of it. I think I've been to there site, but I've never seen it. I finally signed up for May classes in my dojo yesterday(technically I'm a member) and I think that they are either a member of American Shudokan Association(although the founder, Walter Todd died) or some other organization that's pretty congested and hard to rember the title.
  19. Hi there welcome to the forums.
  20. Yeah well I can't understand what it means be 16-18 hours after the last meal. I know mathmatically that's one meal everyday but it seems like two if you wake up at say 5 and eath then undereat the rest of the day and then eat at say 9 and undereat till 5.
  21. Well fireka try to find a practicioner of kyokushin(sp?) karate and test your shotokan aginst him.
  22. Well I don't know if it's a good self defense system or not, but it shoudln't matter if your instructor is overweight. If he is reconized by an organization and certified instructor then I don't think it would mater.
  23. Well welcome to the forums. If you haven't seen it yet there is a big froum devoted to grappling arts. You may want to drop in there.
  24. Well besides techniques I think the balance self-discepline, strenght ect... will help you get into it a little easier. I'm uncertain about the technique though, I'll let you know on May 12th.
