  1. Takes time to learn the japanese terminology!
  2. I have found that it depends on how you've moved throughout the kata. If you've moved on an angle that is off (according to your school) and if your stance is too big or too small then you will end either at the same spot or at a different one. When i've done my kata i don't really end at the same spot as i started. But as i said depends on angle movement and stances.
  3. Yeah yours is very very different. Ours is slightly different to what the 'traditional' goju version is. This is the 'traditional' version with the slight differences other than the timing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJeOCRV0oF0
  4. One of my friends did the shito-ryu version of seeiunchin. So my shito-ryu friends what is your opinion on how he went?
  5. This is one of my friends practicing kata seisan from our style of Goju-Ryu. How different is it to the way that you practice it.
  6. Practice! at work for a break practice at school during a break (recess or lunch). It sounds like you were having a bad night of training, which is normal. Practice at work is effective for you especially if you are having a long shift. So it gets you more focused on your work and on your karate
  7. And stronger bones! which is very true for the style
  8. I read an article about that. I was proud to hear that he got promoted by his instructor. He is worthy of it
  9. I think some parents just don't get how stressful a grade can be, even as an adult the nerves creep in. I'm grading for 3rd Kyu June/July and already the nerves are there I think if my instructor had heard them, then he would've ask them to leave. I maybe could have told them to ease up, but was wary of causing a scene. Is it wise/my place to tell someone off about their own kid in someone else's Dojo? M. I agree they don't realise that it is stressful for their children. My instructor has thrown parents out because of the negativity they were bringing in. The way we've done it in the past during gradings since we have plenty of instructors there anyway, our sensei will walk over to the parent and take them outside for a chat and they have to have an extremely good reason for their behaviour. Since many parents don't know what is correct and what isn't we take this seriously. As the child might be doing it perfectly correct and the parent is talking like they're wrong. Very few parents at my school are active in learning what their kids are actually doing, so they are the ones that actually ask questions to help their child. I've visited many dojos over the last few years and the instructors have been tough on parents and family or friends misbehaving. Even our own students can't be caught bullying.
  10. Congrats on the promotion my friend!
  11. Personally for me those with special needs that i teach or train with i get a lot from. They love to learn and are very focused. My karate as matured and gotten better because of them. Because they show me a different way of thinking and doing!
  12. It is a very good video. I saw it a couple of weeks ago
  13. We allow parents to sit up the back during gradings and classes. But we throw them out if they are saying anything negative or cause a distraction. Our junior gradings students are allowed to watch if they aren't grading and have to be respectful. But our Adult gradings that are run during class so students can still train whilst those grading get assessed. In your case i would have asked the parent to leave because what they're doing is causing a massive distraction for the child and doing a lot of harm to that child's mental health.
  14. I will keep that it mind
  15. Kata and some practical applications for them
  16. Yes it is a mix of Goju and Shotokan. I was bored the other day and looked up their site Which is funny as what other styles has the parenthood of Gōjū-ryū & Shotokan? Kyokushin karate and Ishinryu karate (the one created by Ticky Donovan, not to be confused with Isshin-Ryu karate. This also has elements of Wado), two very strong styles that I know about and there could be more. And they couldn't be any more different (in practices) to GKR. While not getting into the debate or putting my personal views on what "type" of MA this organisation is. The reps that go out (the GKR self defence consultants) more times than not are sales people (on the odd occasion it could be an instructor). They actually advertise on job sites, for example: https://jobsearch.direct.gov.uk/GetJob.aspx?JobID=816210 however the salary is based on reaching X amount of sales, which I've been told is in the fine print. Kyokushin and Isshinryu karate are very good styles to me. They let their art doing the talking instead of sending people out to bring people it. As students who train in those styles talk about it to their friends and family and it will spread like wildfire. Both styles acknowledge their heritage and do justice to each of the styles that they are derived from. I have friends who train in both styles and their instructors are tough in terms of getting things correct and that they are going to be effective for their future.
  17. Sandan is the rank that is commonly accepted that i've noticed that people open their own school. Although one of my friends is in his early 30's and is a nidan and opened his own school last year. BUT he has over 15 years training + teaching experience so he is able to teach. And he is affiliated with his old school so if he needs to he can send them there for any gradings that he can't But a lot of parents would excpect the head instructor to have some form of qualification to teach. So Many head instructors i know hold coaching qualifications with the national governing body (Australian Karate Federation).
  18. this is actually the Ryuei-Ryu Schools version of the kata. But a lot of organisations bunches it together with shitoryu
  19. It felt weird being back on the mat. It felt like i was an absolute beginner at it again instead of being experienced at it
  20. To the bold type above... Years of experience?? I ask because most tournaments nowadays ask ones experience level and not belt color. I have been at tournaments where they have requested experience. But most i've entered ask only for rank. But some i've entered ask for BOTH I have only attended tournaments that have asked for rank.Fair Enough.
  21. There's no list of all mcdojo's out there. You just have to go visit schools to find out
  22. Each is excellent, it does depend on your teacher.
  23. Planning New York, Washington DC, Pittspurgh, Chicago, LA, Las Vegas, San Francisco. and potentially a few other places as well. I am planning hiring a car and travelling to a few places also.
  24. Hi all, To any of our American friends in the us. I am planning on travelling into the USA early next year (after my birthday in march) and will be looking for some work whilst there to help fund my travels. Even if it is for one day or a couple it would be most appreciated. One thing I would like to do is run a couple of seminars for Kata at a couple of dojos during my trip and would charge a small fee to attend (tax would be Included in the price). But for me to do to that any interest from KF members would be greatly appreciated.
