  1. When I was looking for a dojo i was considering krav. The problem is that they all seem to belong to different organizations that claim to be the only true real krav. It seems VERY different from other organizational rivalries. Other organizations usually claim allegiance to one grandmaster or one particular student of a master. Lineage is vital in this sense but other lineages are accepted and respected. Krav seems like a much smaller world with more mottled lineage - I COULD BE COMPLETELY WRONG. There may be a clear person who has been chosen to carry on the system. I may very well be naive and falling for the sales pitches. It doesn't much matter now. I have found my home in traditional Okinawan Goju Ryu.
  2. Yeah - IOGKF also - no symbols.
  3. Welcome to the forum and more importantly to discovering yourself through the martial arts. Please keep us informed about your journey!!
  4. http://www.worbingtonsteele.com/saiinfo.html - nice stuff I was considering it but my sensei prefers a slightly different style
  5. I think what you mean is that some Dojos aren't training properly. You find that everywhere. there's great karate and crap karate, great bjj and crap bjj. Not all traditional schools are equal as all MMA schools are. My dojo we do lots of conditioning, and are taught truly what every movement in the kata is there for. At this point I venture to say there are more crap non traditional schools then traditional because the trend in profit is in non traditional.
  6. Those free sites are reliable and work for the most part. The issue is that they have banners, make it obvious it is a free site and could discontinue service at some point. Their tools are also limited. In general I'm not a fan. As technology becomes more mainstream it also drops in price.
  7. In todays age, a website doesn't imply commercial aspirations, as DWX said too, its a way of letting people know you are out there. Its the way we communicate today - its the new improved phonebook, not a sales ploy though it can be used as such like the phone book. Its a way of expressing exactly what your about in your own words - your own personal soap box. Some things you can use a website for: 1. Educate people, tell them about your Soke and Dai Soke 2. Tell them about the traditional nature of Shindokan 3. Tell them enough to give them and idea of how dedication, hard effort and sweat at your dojo can reward them 4. Offer to share the experience with them and invite them its not about selling them anything, its about you sharing. Let me put it this way. You have definitely expressed much about your affection for your Sensei's, as well your pride in Shindokan. By creating a website you might very well be giving someone that very gift you were given upon joining. Its simply how you reach people.
  8. Can anyone recommend a good mouthguard. Brain pad looks cool because it has the breathing vents but reviews are totally mixed thanks in advance
  9. Yes I'm with the iogkf and from what I understand the Miyagi chojun festival will be the last opportunity for us to train with Higaonna Sensei outside of Okinawa.
  10. That's awesome- something he will look arveryday.
  11. I bought it for myself and asked him to get it signed for me at the next miyagi chojun festival as Higaonna Sensei is his Sensei. I saw his interest In the book and boom, the lightbulb went off.
  12. Sounds like your in the right place
  13. I've been combing the net trying to find reviews or comparisons and I really can't find any. One here and one there. Go with what I know? Buy and return? Keep looking for reviews? Specifically it's the Adidas karate champion gi. I wouldn't mind trying something new but maybe there's a reason I don't know anyone who has one. Generally I see a lot of meijin and tokaido. Thanks
  14. so far a first edition (i beleive) book written by Higaonna Sensei
  15. I'm curious if anyone knows how they stand up to other gis Thanks
  16. I plan on going to okinawa for the next budosai.
  17. I'm hoping not to use bleach- I like the gi and don't want to mess it up. I washed it again- it's a bit better I think - just very weird, seemed to get worse for him with each wash.
  18. Ohh I've been rotating my edc lately. Usually is a kershaw scallion but recently picked up a cold steel mini tuff lite- tough little knife
  19. I just ordered a nice set of sai- very excited
  20. I lent someone my gi for a class and upon laundering it seemed to have some staining that looks like dirt. he rewashed it and it almost seemed to get worse - i washed it- doesnt seem worse but not better. odd - anyone see this? ideas?
  21. Whats your weapon of choice. What weapons are you studying?
  22. Sensei's been to Okinawa a dozen times - he was an uchi deshi at a point, hes quite formal and traditional. I consider him an authority but i guess everyone considers their sensei an authority.
