    Testing

I don't think it is a good form of quality control. Most schools do test. There are still far too many subpar black belts out there. That just comes from incompetent instructors. As far as quality control goes ....sending a student to a formal test by the Master Instructor has more to do with you as an instructor than anything else. It is about the quality of your instruction not their performance.

    Goal setting and quality control.
  3. I heard about the school from my son's friend who we took in for a few months. He studied it with his uncle when he was younger. I had never heard of the style so I googled it and found a post about it on KF made by karatekid1975. I pm'd her and it turns out she was a student at the mainschool! The rest is history...I have developed a great friendship with her and have opened my own charter school. Thanks Laurie and KF!!!!!!
  4. Welcome! Same here...never heard of it. Can you elaborate?
  5. I try not to punish....but I do "motivate" my students to behave properly. I have actually had kids mis-behave on purpose just to get "motivated" by me!! I think kids (and adults) respond to positive attention better that negative too so harshness in the classroom is reserved for the more disruptive and flagrant misbehavior only. Patience is the key to teaching students how to conduct themselves whether 4 years old or 40.
  6. At 8th Kyu I wouldn't worry about speed and power...they come with experience. Keep working on technique and balance for now-of course all the advice given can be put into practice to assist you with technique but be careful of the heavy bag as tendons, ligaments, and muscles need to develop for each technique and too much strain before this happens can damage the joints.
  7. My dear sweet golden retriever of 8 years passed away in September....... We are getting a new dog on Wednesday- a german pinscher that is retiring from the show ring and needs a forever home. He will definitely live a spoiled life around here....right Laurie!
  8. OK....anyone going to watch the Ohio State-Michigan game tomorrow? GO MICHIGAN!!!!!!
  9. I start letting the white belts kick at the hogus during set sparring drills only. It helps re-enforce proper technique and foot shape-you get immediate feedback when you hit it incorrectly! Also the colored belts paired up with them have to start to learn control because they are not allowed to make contact with the beginners; and learn to take a "hit" from those sometimes out of control white belts!
  10. You make an excellent point here. Having just opened a second location I can testify to the costs of running a school!
  11. It seems like a lot of money... what is involved in the testing? Is this akin to double testing or is it two separate tests? I have double ranked at the dan levels and have had to pay 50% of the fee for the skipped rank in addition to the other fee. It was worth it to me to achieve my current goals.
  12. I prefer the Palgwes however my current school does not practice them-only Taegeuks.
