  1. Respectfully speaking, and only going by what you have said here, if I was your sensei I would not advance you either. It is one thing to know what attitude you should have but another to actually have it. You may be letting this show in class and sensei is waiting for that to change. A shodan should already understand this and always come to class with an empty cup.
  2. Welcome!
  3. I have heard it before.....but just can't give up tomatoes or onions!!!!
  4. Yes! I think that until you understand this concept (just one of many) you cannot understand technique. Considering TKD, it's karate roots are very evident in this regard but not obvious to the beginner or "surface" practitioner. When comparing apples and oranges one must remember its all just fruit!
  5. I agree...looks nice. Sorry I can't help with the kanji!
  6. Quite true. Sometimes the movement patterns that we drill into our students make our life a bit harder but I am still a proponent of this style of teaching. I'd rather tweak them later that have them be weak in the foundations of technique. There is always a method to the madness!
  7. Are you an ATA black belt, Heidi? No. There was a nice article in one of the Trade Journals I get and it interested me so I checked it out. Anyone can use the workout right from the website...very convenient!
  8. XMA is beneficial for conditioning, flexibility, strength, agility, etc., and while it is flashy it's underlying martial arts principles and philosophies are as sound as those of the instructors teaching it. Just as any other martial arts style some are in it for the substance others are not.
  9. Welcome!
  10. I started the Warrior-x Program yesterday (ATA's version of P90X). Very well organized and easy to use...I'll keep you posted on the progress.
  11. Yesterday we worked on our combat tactics paying special attention to proximity and secondary targets. I have several students who seem to want to "hang" their techniques out there so I on occasion grab the offending extremity and give instant feedback. Such fun!
  12. It is good...some great history lessons in there! Thanks!
  13. Learning the pattern is easy....knowing it takes a lifetime. "Understanding is not good enough, you must apply. Knowing is not good enough, you must do."-Bruce Lee
  14. Anyone have any info on martial arts schools in Salisbury, MD? I have two students moving to that area this month and would like to help them find another school to train at. Any info would be appreciated!
  15. Welcome!
  16. Congratulations!!!
  17. It is all in the chamber and the position of the hips. I tell my students that this kick is a combination of side kick and turning kick-chamber and kick like the side kick(aiming just to the side of the target) and then recoil the leg (and hip) just like a turning kick. The change in momentum whips the foot through the target, and the finish of the kick should look just like a turning kick. Clear as mud?
  18. We must wear all white unless it matches the color of our chest protector-red or blue-which means you have to have two complete sets (one of each color) if you choose to go this way. White is just easier-then all you have to do is change the chest protector!
  19. I had this trouble with a kid in my class until I told him to shout like he was cheering for his favorite football team...it worked!
  20. I agree about an Instructors class (we have one in our Association) but there always seems to be one guy in every school I have been at that pulls rank and teaches like doo! My policy, when in a class being run by this kind of person, is to just train...and if I happen to see my partner making an error in technique I will correct him but I go no further than that. If I get incorrect information I never argue...I just chuckle inside and continue to train. The mat is not the place to have this kind of discussion when in a student-teacher relationship....off the mat is more appropriate-with the presence of a higher ranking instructor to clarify.
