  1. Risk is inherent in any activity you choose. I have seen alot of broken bones, blown out knees, etc. over the years...and have even experienced a few myself, but....it seems to me that there may be a certain lack of control when someone breaks a forearm blocking a kick in a sparring class. Most injuries tend to occur during regular classes when people are learning and practicing new techniqes, not during a sparring match where skill level is matched with skill level. Lower belt levels should not be sparring full contact, black belts should have the control to deal with a less skilled student. JMO
  2. High kicks may not be practical in every situation but when practiced consistantly they improve your strength and balance very effectively and thus enhance your abilities to use all techniques.
  3. While JJ has no expressed "kata", each "board" is a series of techniques done in order. When done properly it resembles a kata and since it is done the same way each time could be considered a kata.
  4. I do kata in the water whenever possible....good for balance and strength.
  5. NAPMA has a decent magazine. Lots of articles on business, motivation, etc. (National Asso. Professional Martial Artists). They have a website... https://www.napma.com
  6. I tend to agree with Sai. It's the way most women are brought up and it sometimes takes a lot to break that mindset. It is hard to find agressive female sparring partners to train with too which doesn't help matters either.
  7. I studied Palgwe's at my former TKD school. I am now learning Taeguk's. Personally, I like the Palgwe forms much better. Hey Laurie...I'll teach ya the Palgwe's!!!
  8. One competes to stroke the ego. One fights for their life to win.
  9. Try grip strengthening and joint mobility exercises too. Increased flexibility in your left wrist may help.
  10. My old TKD school incorporates boxing into their curriculum and fighting style. It is a good mix!
  11. It was just a rhetorical statement-not aimed at anyone in particular.
  12. You are good girl!!!!!!!! (except make that snowboarding, not skiing !) Thanks Buddy!
  13. Bummer MG!!!! There is a good side to that though...if you throw it hard enough every time they rh, they'll stop throwing it and switch to something else . Then when they least expect it....WHAM! On the serious side..yes it can be detrimental to your bag of tricks if you do it too much. All things in moderation you know! Any straight kick or fake front with a followup kick will get them thinking too. OOPS, am I giving Laurie too much info ??? I better stop spilling the beans 'cause you never know when we'll go!!!!
  14. Not sure how to answer this but here goes.... Karate(or any art) , practiced in a traditional manner with heart and soul and mind, is no less effective in training the body than any other way. And, the added benefits are obvious. If you are not getting the results you want from your karate training maybe it is your training, not the karate?
