  1. TKD and kung fu-combined into one system. No fitness center, no extras, classes 6 days a week if you want. The main school is building a new facility-I'm not sure what it will have available fitness wise. They only offer the one system and limit you to 3 classes/week unless you are a BB. I do not necessarily agree with that, but since I am not at the main school I can't complain. My old school offered TKD, Cardio-kickboxing, muay thai, arnis, and BJJ all for one price. Unlimited classes if under contract, 7 days a week. This ran about 120/month or 85/month on contract.
  2. Normal depends a lot on the demographics of where you live. I have paid as little as $30/month and as much as $120/mo. I have also trained for free. Currently I live in a small town and pay $50/month but the main school-located in a larger city-charges $150/month.
  3. It's not "How much do I pay?" but rather "What is it worth to me?".
  4. Relax and don't fight it-you'll tire yourself out. Learn to constantly shift your center of gravity so they lose their leverage. Eventually you will tire them out and find an opening to use a finger lock or other technique to get yourself out. Learning escapes takes a lot of practice and body awareness...it also takes patience.

  6. Very true, but I do have an observation. I have studied karate, TKD, and jujitsu for many years. Recently I started training in wushu and have noticed that I am using balance muscles that I haven't used before. In fact at times a little frustrating to move smoothly and feel comfortable. The added factors involved in this art seem to make it quite a bit more applicable in many situations and environments-a big plus!!
  7. Thanks for the info. I was confused as I recently started at a school which teaches "kung fu" along with TKD but the Master refers to it as wushu in conversation. Now I know why.
  8. Palm strike is the first offensive self defense technique we teach to students. It takes years to develop a proper punch and puts them at risk for hand injury. Even kids can use it, even if it is just enough to startle their attacker so that they can get away.
  9. From the description it sounds like he is intending to strike with the ball of the foot. This basic footshape can be used to target specific areas that would be unaccessable when using the top of the foot as the striking surface, i.e., collarbones, solar plexus, nose, etc. I practice both ways. Hip rotation can also be different depending on the height and angle of the kick.
  10. How old are you? Osgood Schlatter's can affect boys and girls during growth periods and involves the tubercle of the tibia just below the knee cap creating the pain you describe. Or it could just be strained ligaments or tendons due to over training. Maybe take a few days off to rest and ice it down.
  11. Believe me, I love food more than anybody and everything I eat I enjoy!! Eliminating foods that make you feel like crap all the time increases the pleasure!
  12. No smugness intended! I live in a house full of meat eaters and they give me so much crap about it I've lost all ambition to change the world!!!!
  13. Being a small woman I have found that this only limits me when I have to fight a 200+ pound guy and I don't get out of the way fast enough-ouch!!! Other than that size does not matter. I would like to suggest to you that you look into ju jitsu. I find that I can throw ANY size person and can adapt any technique to suit me. It is an excellent choice for self defense and there is no sparring in traditional styles so contact is minimal. I do agree with others that you should investigate the schools in your area very thouroughy. Most reputable schools will let you take a few classes for free to see if you like it. Good luck!

  15. JKTT, You can find wheatgrass juice in the frozen case at some organic/whole food stores. It's a bit pricey though. You can buy a juicer designed for wheatgrass too. I love being a vegan-I feel so good all the time . Yesterday in my new school the master instructor commented to the class that eating red meat and procesed foods decreases flexibility-hint, hint !!! Finally, someone on the "outside" sees the value of being a vegan ! For those of you that think this is a sick diet, you should do some research and try it out. You'll feel so good all the time that you won't even miss those hamburgers and greasy fries. You'll be surprised how deliscious living foods are...and the animals will thank you too !!!
