  1. It's office sticky paste, and no.
  2. I stick them to the wall of my study with blu-tack.
  3. I concur, some pressure point work works well in theory but not always in practice. I get to try some on my Sensei and other senior grades sometimes, the results can be at best mixed.
  4. Two of the Sempai at our club are Women, they are treated with respect. One of them can kick much harder than me, not because she's stronger; it's because here technique is better.
  5. Oitsuki, that's not too bad; there are some schools in the UK that charge over £50 a month and over £30 per grading regardless of whether it's a city Dojo or not.
  6. As the years go by Italy are becoming more of a unit on the Rugby field. I think Wales v England at Cardiff is one of the greatest fixtures in the game.
  7. Does anyone watch the Rugby? There's a big game next weekend, Wales v England at Cardiff. In the ultimate contact sport this is a meeting of giants with a long history. They say the Welsh Red Dragon roars with the crowd at this great event. It will be a good match, usually these meetings have no punches but great impact.
  8. It is difficult for me to reflect the cost here in the UK, the price of martial arts can vary greatly. If you can justify and afford it, it's your business to pay what you think is right.
  9. I practice Kata and Kihon every other day. I go to the gym twice a week and practice with my Sensei every friday night. I try and get a couple of runs in every week too.
  10. My original style was Shorin Ryu, it was a good place to start.
  11. A good book, "The Way of the Warrior - The Paradox of the Martial Arts."
  12. This is true, there should never be a block that doesn't leave your opponent at a disadvantage. Apart from the famous Kenpo quote about blocking and striking being one of the same; leaving your opponent off balance, unable to react to a counter, or even having the fight finished with that block is what it is all about.
  13. We are lucky in our club to have a pressure point specialist as a Sensei. His experience and knowledge is vast. I have learnt much from him; he keeps this training fort the adults as a matter of ethics and safety.
  14. Hi! Welcome to the forum, I studied Wing Chun for a few tears, excellent system, enjoy!
  15. I think there would be distinct differences between Olympic Tae Kwon Do and Karate, the scoring is different, the Karate scoring is almost like Judo, (Ippon, Wazari, Yuko) and Karateka don't wear all the protection that the Korean Kick-Fighters do. I think it's a good idea, but the debate has been going for some time.
  16. Well, they have Judo, Fencing and Tae Kwon Do in the Olympics, so why not Karate? I am of course Biased, but I think Ippon Jiu Kumite for the best of three bouts would be awesome!! Thoughts Guys?
  17. Oh, I see, I have a view about that too, please bare with me. My Sensei is reaching his 5th Dan this year, so he will be regarded as a Renshi, or Master of the art. If you called him "Master Williams" he would ask you to call him "Sensei" as this is his preference. There is a very notable Shotokan Club locally were no-one has the title "Sensei" not even the two 6th Dan's. They reserve it for their Grandmaster Sensei Kawasoe. My point is, that it's each to his own, in context, respect and value. I call my Sensei "Eric San", as this is how he refers to me.
  18. A title, when given in an Open Competition, that is open to all comers whatever their style is the true mark of a martial artist. The fact that boxing titles can be given after carefully selecting a boxer's opponents along the way discredits it if you ask me. An open well publicized event that takes in the best contenders in the world would be far more of a reflection of the fighter or Kata artist. If the judging is fair, they can hold their title with pride. I think including Karate in the Olympics would be fun, Ippon Jui Kumite; best of three bouts.
  19. My Sensei's Karate comes from the Heart not the Pocket and it shows. He is genuinely kind but takes no nonsense, he has an emotional connection with each grade he gives out. I am very lucky.
  20. Kubotans are more portable and concealable. Also they have many more applications. Just my opinion, feel free to try anything you think will be of benefit.
  21. Yes, I had my first lesson as an intermediate grade tonight, Pinan Yondan, Ushiro Geri, and a new look in the Sensei's eye when he calls each move. Feels Amazing!!
  22. Snickers bars are great for energy and fine in moderation, it can be the case of not what you eat but how much and how often.
  23. I agree, a preemptive strike or interception of an attack is valid and encouraged in Karate.
  24. Most of it I guess is to do with pressure points and maybe an assisted joint lock or two. I would never strike anyone in the torso or head with a Kubotan; the blow could be fatal.
  25. Aikido works the circle and point system of movement. The center of the Hurricane is calm while all around are Tsunami on the Tatami.
