  1. If someone is a true mixed martial artist they would be skilled in striking, clinch fighting, takdedowns and more importantly takewdown defense...somehow I would think those skills would be useful when dealing with more than 1 opponet..
  2. Im of cousre hoping for royce but be realistic...hughes by UD. The only guys that have beat hughes have done it quickly in the first round...lets face it Thats not Royces stlye..he tends to be the slower/technical..waer your opponet down type guy. Royce has fought bigger and stronger guys so I dont see hughes knocking him out or submitting him..combine that with the fact that royce isint going to be able to take him down very easily and you have a Hughes GNP to decision..
  3. too broad a question. Even if someone gives you a detailed explination of how to get out of a certain hold unless you are rolling alot and training it you proabably wont pull it off on someone who kows what they are doing.
  4. Yes the triangle choke fround it's way into BJJ in the 70's and came from judo. You can use it in Judo competition, the only problem is that all they have to do is lift you off the mat to get restarted. edit: I used the wrong name for it..
  5. Karate kicked- Im assuming the 3 year brown belt would be Hector Munoz? If so then I have heard alot of good things about him, I havent seen him compete much but I have seen some of his fights/grappling matches and he has looked pretty impressive.
  6. I find it makes your submission defense improve and tighten up..what I mean is with a Gi you cant just jerk your arm out or slide out of an arm bar like you can in sometimes in No-gi. You have to get a good bicep block, knee on the butt..work out the right way. same can be said for triangles, oma platas etc. but on the other hand there are also some submissions that are easier to defend with a Gi like kimuras. It is also going to help buuild your balance since people can control and sweep you easier.
  7. usually 1-2 years before you get a blue belt(first belt) if you train regularly. About 10 years of average to get a black belt if you stick to it. What does it take? Mosly just getting to class..learning techniques, drilling them, and practicing them in sparring/rolling as much as possible.
  8. Shamrock has trained with a Gi in the past. read his book. Severn and Kerr dont really submitt people..especially not people that are good on the ground. Hughes has actually developed a good submission game. No one is saying you cant be good at submissions with out a Gi. There are still reasons to train with it especially in the begining when you are first learning.
  9. Lots of discussion on this topic recently I still belive It's best to start with a Gi atleast until you get your basics down. You have to understand alot of Todays top grapplers still train with a Gi quite often..even the ones who win in ADCC.

  12. Practicing technique against a non resisting opponet repetion drills.such as arm bar..hip bump drills. Limited scope drills..such as mount escape drills Free rolling against a wide range of opponets..both above and below your technical level.

  15. I have heard good stuff about Bravos New book. The only thing im concerned about is flexibility..

You start in a nuetral or over under clinch (each person has one arm under and one arm over) From there Its kind of like swimming for under hook...basically as one person makes space on one side to swim for an underhook, the other person does the same thing on the other side. Its kind of a baisc drill that teaches you how to a achive a dominate clinch which is a double underhook body lock, and also to defend against someone getting double underhooks on you and being in a dominate position to take you down.
  17. Honestly I dont fight much for takedowns when we start from the knees. Your gaurd isint going ot get any better unless you staet working on it and that is a good time. That dosent mean im a guard puller. When we start standing I fight for the takedown more than most people will.
  18. Mount escape. Back mount/RNC escape Sit out/ gettign up from gaurd. Sprawl/ body lock defenses. basic arm bar/choke defenses. Realistically If you dont plan to train much grappling you want to keep it pretty baisc and know enough to survive and get backto your feet. If you get taken down by a better grappler your proabably not going ot be able to submit of reverse them unless you devote alot of time to it. So like i said Keep it basic and make sure you are really good at the stuff you do know.
  19. congrats, You definetly learn alot from tournaments and will progress quicker imo becauseof them.
  20. alot depends on the focus of the school I belive Judo or BJJ have the most potential but only if they are applied twords a practical setting.
  21. It will be hard to find..There are a few schools like Hayastan that will teach it.
  22. In straight grappling I find it easier to work from sidemount..especially against larger opponets. In a real fight Mount or back mount would be best..strikes open things up pretty qyuckly.
  23. either from side control or sometimes If i have someone mounted I will push up and take my shin across them to move to that position.
  24. definetly a great in my book. and btw stlye Tyson would have goten frustrated and knocked out by ali in late round. Bad matchup for Iron mike.
  25. unless you wana do sol drills like shrimping, upas, hip heist drill etc then you need a grappling dummy. If you have a punching bag you can put it on the floor and practice some stuff like strikes on the ground or moving from sidemount to mount/knee on belly to side mount..switching sides etc.
