Everyone has offered me excellent advice, thanks guys!!

I went running this morning before breakfest, I would have been burning fat though since I've been asleep at least 8 hours, right ? I'm on a Cathie Graham-like diet, but I'm making it a lifestyle change. Like BRG suggested, I've cut white bread, potatoes, pasta and softdrink out of my diet and replaced with whole wheat/brown pita bread (lower on the GI index & I only have 1-2 servings a day) to try and control my blood sugar levels, and lower the amount of insulin in my body, so the amount of glucagon is higher. I'm adding spices into my food (makes me burp a lot) to boost metabolism from 5-25% depending on the spice. I'm also drinking iced water to get rid of the toxins in my body. I'm not counting calories, although I imagine it would be lower than my BMR (~1950), but does someonw know of a site with a list of calories in all foods so I can check I'm under my BMR? Also, I am impatient, so can anyone tell me what kind of results to expect weekly? My BMI is currently just over 27.5 (not good). I'd like to shed the excess fat before Uni starts in less than 30 days time, but obviosuly I've left it a bit late for that. Would 6lbs over 3 weeks be a realistic expectation? Mr Heel Hook, would going on a low carb diet to lose excess fat, then incorporate 1-2 carbs back into your diet on a weekly basis & monitoring your weight be dangerous for your health? I figure that the excess weight (we're talking 25-60lbs) is more a health risk than a temporary bad diet.

Okay, my notes are up here if anyone's interested. I might write an article up later and submit if I have success and think I know what I'm doing/talking about.

All good advice, thanks guys. I have 4 pages of notes from my research, I'll post them up when I've typed them up incase you guys can pick up a pointer or two.

Just because someone does well in the UFC under a set of rules does not mean they will do well in the streets where there are no rules. IMO, if the guy can't strike, he's gonna have his ass handed to him on a plate. More often than not, there will be more than one guy, so going to the ground is not a viable option. I would only reccomend BJJ (or another ground grappling art) for self defense after someone is proficient in striking to become well rounded.

Good advice, taken on board, thanks!

I have worked for GKR and trained in GKR. I have seen 'Kancho Robert Sullivan' sparring and attended a class he instructed. Personally, I was not impressed. I was absolutely disgusted. All just MO, of course.

I believe these are the Darwin awards, but I found some of these so stupid, which is why I named the thread what I did. When his 38-caliber revolver failed to fire at his intended victim during a holdup in Long Beach, California, would be robber James Elliot id something that can only inspire wonder: He peered down the barreland tried the trigger again. This time it worked. And now, the honorable mentions The chef at a hotel in Switzerland lost a finger in a meat cutting machine and, after a little hopping around, submitted a claim to his insurance company. The company, suspecting negligence, sent out one ofits men to have a look for himself. He tried the machine out and lost a finger. The chef's claim was approved. ******************************************************** A man who shoveled snow for an hour to clear a space for his car during a blizzard in Chicago returned with his vehicle to find a woman had taken the space. Understandably, he shot her. ******************************************************** After stopping for drinks at an illegal bar, a Zimbabwean bus driver found that the 20 mental patients he was supposed to be transporting from Harare to Beltway had escaped. Not wanting to admit his incompetence, the driver went to a nearby bus stop and offered everyone aiting there a free ride. He then delivered the passengers to the mental hospital, telling the staff that the patients were very excitable and prone to bizarre fantasies. The deception wasn't discovered for 3 days. ************************************************************** An American teenager was in the hospital yesterday recovering from serious head wounds received from an oncoming train. When asked how he received the injuries, the lad told police that he was simply trying to see how close he could get his head to a moving train before he was hit. ******************************************************** A man walked into a Louisiana Circle-K, puts a $20 bill on the counter, and asked for change. When the clerk opened the cash drawer, the man pulled a gun and asked for all the cash in the register, which the clerk promptly provided. The man took the cash from the clerk and fled, leaving the $20 bill on the counter. The total amount of cash he got from the drawer? $15. (If someone points a gun at you and gives you money, was a crime committed?) ******************************************************** A thief burst into a Florida bank one day wearing a ski mask and carrying a gun. Aiming his gun at the guard, the thief yelled, "FREEZE, MOTHER-STICKERS, THIS IS A ****-UP!" For a moment, everyone was silent. Then the snickers started. The guard completely lost it and doubled over laughing. It probably saved his life, because he'd been about to draw his gun. He couldn't have drawn and fired before the thief got him. The thief ran away and is still at large. In memory of the event, the banker later put a plaque on the wall engraved with the words, "Freeze, mother-stickers, this is a ****-up!" ******************************************************** Seems this Arkansas guy wanted some beer pretty badly. He decided that he'd just throw a cinderblock through a liquor store window, grab some booze, and run. So he lifted the cinderblock and heaved it over his head at the window. The cinderblock bounced back and hit the would-be thief on the head, knocking him unconscious. Seems the liquor store window was made of Plexiglas. The whole event was caught on videotape. ******************************************************** As a female shopper exited a New York convenience store, a man grabbed her purse and ran. The clerk called 911 immediately, and the woman was able to give them a detailed description of the snatcher. Within minutes, the police apprehended the snatcher. They put him in the car and drove back to the store. The thief was then taken out of the car and told to stand there for a positive ID. To which he replied, "Yes, officer, that's her. That's the lady I stole the purse from." ******************************************************** The Ann Arbor News crime column reported that a man walked into a Burger King in Ypsilanti, Michigan, at 5 a.m., flashed a gun, and demanded cash. The clerk turned him down because he said he couldn't open the cash register without a food order. When the man ordered onion rings, the clerk said they weren't available for breakfast. The man, frustrated, walked away. ********************************************************* Kentucky: Two men tried to pull the front off a cash machine by running a chain from the machine to the bumper of their pickup truck. Instead of pulling the front panel off the machine, though, they pulled the bumper off their truck. Scared, they left the scene and drove home. With the chain still attached to the machine. With their bumper still attached to the chain. With their vehicle's license plate still attached to the bumper. They were quickly arrested. ******************************************************** A 5-STAR STUPIDITY AWARD WINNER! When a man attempted to siphon gasoline from a motor home parked on a Seattle street, he got much more than he bargained for. Police arrived at the scene to find an ill man curled up next to a motor home near spilled sewage. A police spokesman said that the man admitted to trying to steal gasoline and plugged his siphon hose into the motor home's sewage tank by mistake. The owner of the vehicle declined to press charges, saying that it was the best laugh he'd ever had. Ferrari A man read, in the want ads, of a Ferrari for sale. It had only 3,000 miles on the clock. "Like new," the ad boasted. "Mint condition. $75.00." He laughed to himself, and he said, "There goes the newspaper, making another mistake." But he decided to call the number anyway and he asked the woman who answered about the sports car. "Is it really brand new?" "Yes," she replied" "Three thousand miles?" "Yes." "The price?" "Seventy-five dollars," she answered. "Lady, what's wrong with it?" he asked. "Nothing is wrong with it. You're the first to call. I suppose nobody else believes the ad." He decided to look at it. She let him take a test drive. The car looked exquisite and ran perfectly. He just couldn't believe his luck! "The car is yours for $75.00," the woman said emphatically, "on one condition. I want the money now, and I want you to drive it away so I never have to see it again." He paid her and took the keys. "Please tell me, lady," he persisted. "You could have sold this car for $50,000. What is going on?" She told her story: "I bought this car for my husband on our twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Two weeks later he ran off with somebody else. Last week I got a card from him. They're in a resort in Miami Beach, Florida. The card said, 'Need money, sell car, send cash.'"

Krav Maga...?
BonnyBoy replied to Christine's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Don't be silly! That IS GOOD! It means it's a quality dojo and you'll receive quality instruction. At my current dojo, most of the guys have been there for at least 3 years. Sure, I spent a lot of time losing in sparring and feel like I am not progressing very much. However, once you spar against people on your level, you really get to kick some ass! However, krava maga is taught to the Isralei army. It is designed purely for self defence, and for people of all fitness levels, ages, builds, height, weight to get proficient in hand to hand combat quickly. A very realistic and practical system for the street, utilising attack as defense. I'll probably try a lesson out next week, I'll tell you what I think if you like. -
Yes, lifting weights should gain weight, but you'll lose fat faster. 1 pound of muscle burns between 35-50 calories a day, so there is nothing wrong with adding a few pounds of muscle. Oh, and lifting weights won't make you slower, it'll make you faster if done correctly along with stretching.. : - ) You might like Brasilian Jiu Jitsu (keep in mind, I'm biased since I study it), I find the heavy guys really hard to grapple with. Except, BJJ is all ground fighting and there are no strikes, only some take downs. Your strong legs could be put to good use with the guard. Go with a style that appeals to you though, if you pick the wrong one, you could turn away from MA like I did when I was younger and waste valuable training times. Knowing what you want out of your training also makes it easier to pick a style, whether you want self defense, or just sport, etc.

Hi, I have found low carbohydrate diets very effective for losing weight, but unless you maintain a low carb diet, the weight comes back on. My problem is I believe I have syndrome X, I'm pretty sure, because I have the symptoms and whenever I eat starchy foods I become tired and feel like going to sleep. It's been a major hinderance to my study, as I cannot study if I consume starchy foods, I just don't have the concentration required. Also, I am between 6-12 pounds overweight, and with University soon I'd like to shed this fat and reveal my muscle underneath for a real confidence boost. I don't believe a low carb diet is a viable option, I'm looking for a way of eating, not something to do for a couple of weeks, then go back to eating whatever I want, whenever I want. Are there any suggestions to how I can eat permanently, and avoid the symptoms of eating carbohydrates so I can study effectively, yet still get enough energy for my training? Btw, I plan to start training real serious soon, I'm currently doing BJJ 3x a week, possibly 4x, and I'll be adding weight training in 2x a week at least. I'd also like to shed this fat within 30 days exactly!

Can you give an example of a technique? I've never seen anyone submit a guy from the mount before. Keep in mind most grapplers can strike as well, even if only to a limited extent. Most strikers can't grapple at all unless they've ever trained in grappling. It's much harder to prevent being taken down than you think it is, put on some gloves against a grappler, and have him take you down while you just strike.
