chrisw08 replied to chrisw08's topic in Martial Arts Weapons
I cant afford that by the way which shorin ryu style are you. Im in kenshin kan by fusei kise -
I bought a recurve bow around 25 draw weight and 28 inch draw length. What kind of arrows can i buy under $7 that are fit to be at a light weight for target practice at my draw weight. I do know what arrows work for lighter bows

I bought her a Bear Scout Bow. It has 8-13 lbs and She draws it back about 2/3 She is about to be 8. Problem Is i cant find any arrows that are light enough and I need it at 24 inches. It is supposed to be like 6 grains per pound right so I need a arrow that is at least 78 grains but the lightest arrow at a pro shop was like 250 and a bought an arrow at wal mart and it turned out to be like 530 grains which was way to much. I dont know what to do to get the right sized arrow

I was just curious with my body size and how much average person can bench. I weight 188 and i have a crappy 26% bodyfat. my 1 rep rep bench is about 140 mabye even 145 now. But im only about 5 9 with my feet together. I was wondering I lose about 20 pounds of fat and got to about 165 and could bench around 150 how strong is that?

I was wondering if people would like to put picks of there karate weapons up and give a review and opinion of the weapon. I am going to be doing mine sometimes and plan on making a few you tube review videos. I was actualy curious about kama and sai the most. I am going to start training with both and want an idea of which weapons are good to buy. Also I want to train with heavy comfortable weapons.

Mine is kenshin kan shorin ryu matsumura seito. The leader of my style and grandmaster fusei kise. My kata is diffrent that the shotokan one some parts are the same.
-
The other day was my second time to try pinan shodan and got it down ok now Im going to be working on the first 8 moves of that. It will be my first advanced kata besides won su but its short though.
-
My sensai knows a tai chi kata it is the last thing his master taught him so he said we are all required to learn it. Im kenshin kan shorin ryu and kubudo matsumura seito but he said we are all going to learn it to relax and understand how to relax with your moves and focus. When we do it in class it does feel relaxing afterwards and I feel at peace.

I'd have to slightly disagree with that one because I understand where your coming from but when you train with your hands your hands become deadly but putting a weapon in your hands you become even deadlier. Its an extension of your body but still your using your hands so training with a weapon trains with your hands to and translates your hand training to the weapon with more control and understanding how to attack. I understand what you mean if you couldn't find a weapon but if you could then you would want to know how to use it especially if you were in your house or somewhere close by and could not reach a firearm.Imagine someone barges into your house with a weapon attempting to kill you close to where your standing and your a master of both hands and weapons. You could lunge forward and fight with your hands but you could reach over and grab a kitchen knife and jab your deadly intruder with a punching strike like you train with the sai. penetrating the attacker and ending the fight quickly. Which would be better? They are both important to me in realy life deadly situations because you have to be good with your hands to use a weapon but if you use a weapon your not using your hands naturaly. So I just ment it is better to master your hands before putting a weapon in it. You wouldnt want to fight someone that had a weapon empty handed. Its karate and supposed to be empty handed because thats what it translates to but thats where the kubudo came in!!! Ever time a karate instructor tell you to run when an enemy has a weapon so what if that if they have a weapon you dont have a choice and you can pick up a weapon. Wouldnt that make it more even.

Too broke to afford it but my sensai bought a shuredio bo and has shuredio sais. The sais are awesome looking. They look like combat weapons. Also if you ever get a bo from there here is something to know. Shuredio Bos are supposed to be impossible to break but my sensai train with a man and it broke. Guess what can break a shuredio bo? Another Shuredio Bo. Just thought id let you know on that so you dont make that mistake. That is about all I can say about it.

10 Things I would like to share as a student 1. If you have a good sensei- If it was not important he would not of said it- listen when he talks 2. Perfect and refurbish everything you know first instead of striving so fast to learn more when you don’t fully understand what you know or think you know!! 3. Get in the zone and perform your kata like its actually happening and your defending yourself against your instructor or training partner. 4. Hands before weapons- Sometimes people start trying to learn the weapons right from the beginning- put it as second priority until you have trained at least a few years with your hands. Doesn’t mean don’t practice just practice your hands around 80% and weapons 20% instead of the other way around. 5. Examine your kata and learn what you are actually doing. Instructors should be teaching you what is actually happening in your kata and what you’re doing to stop it. 6. Don’t be over confident but don’t ever put yourself down. You will meet rocky roads in your learning path but you also find smooth and easy roads sometimes. Remember your learning not just having fun so it’s going to be hard at some points. 7. Lift weights for power and run/move to gain agility also wield the biggest weapon you can control in practice. Practicing with 3 pound Bo’s and 5 pounds Sais just makes practicing that much more productive when you go to a medium weight weapon as long as you can control it. 8. Practice your kata and drills over and over again so that it comes natural. Do it in a structured manor so that you don’t just end up doing random stuff. Repetition is the key to mastery so make sure you know what you’re doing everyday and how many times. 9. Don’t fight just to fight everything you learn is to practice or to use in the moment when you might lose your life. Not just a fun game. 10. Last of all make sure you have a good instructor. Don’t be put down by an abusive instructor that is just there to make money put you down or just never teach you anything at all. Make sure it is a man that you would want to be one day or it’s not the right one. If you feel uncomfortable around your instructor then there is probably a problem there. Remember there are many teachers so don’t feel like an abusive one is your only choice. I would like to hear others peoples 10 opinions on being a good martial artist or discuss anything that I said.

I have finaly got into a steady practice scheduel. I practice all of my kata 5 times a day and some other drills randomly. So right now I practice Fuku gata itche Fuku gata Ni Fuku gata Son Won Su and i am looking forward to learning pinan shodan to practice and within a few months I should know a kata or 2 more. So within 6 months i should be practicing these 5 times a day Fuku gata itche Fuku gata Ni Fuku gata Son Won su Pinan Shodan Bo kata 1 Also my work is getting cut from 8 hours a day to 4 so I should have more energy and will double it to 10 to 15 each if I can handle it every day. This is the routine Ive chosen to take and ive noticed my kata have doubled in looks in the last month or two.

Well I made my first karate order since I joined the new class. I decided on straight hardwood bo 5" around 1 lb. 15 ounces and the spiral regular escrima x2 so I looked online and it was around $75 with shipping for the 2 escrima and hardwood bo. I'll tell yall how happy I was with my purchuse. Might make a review video.
-
I know most people will disagree with me but I like the way the straight bo feels but I hate tapered bo's. Ive bought three and wasted my money. Now Im going to buy all new bo's. I hate how it feels when you swing it speeds up but doesnt feel balanced and kinda feels like it whips at the end. This is my personal opinion but just thought id share it.
-
Its ok and so is yours kenshin kan matsumura? Is your grandmaster fusei kise? He has his own classic version schools. is that what yours is?
-
Reason is if I had to buy one bo to practice perform my kata in class and tournement which should I buy if only one? the spiral one?

How many belts should there be?
chrisw08 replied to vantheman's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
I think anywhere between 4-6 is apropriate. I think 4 would make it less catorgized and people on 4 diffrent levels instead of 10 but 6 does show where you have made progress though. -
Do you think your kata looks better with the spiral bo since it is lighter and the design
-
I am going to buy the spiral rattan bo. I like the way it looks when it spins and it looks like it has pretty nice control. I am also going to buy a hardwood straight bo. Any one have those and what is your opinion.
-
Im not a black belt but I can tell you the most effective traditional weapons to master would be the bo and the escrima sticks. Its theory is simple there are many long two handed things you can use like a bo and if you master escrima then you can use two short handed weapons that you might pick up also. Just look at condemned the videogame for 360. If that person was a master of bo and escrima he could move the weapon faster and more effectivly not just swing it. It would make it so much easier. Learn bo for two handed weapons and escrima for short double handed weapons and you can control everything better.

im 185 and 5 9 ive doubled my size from lifting weights. Im about medium heavy and I use full force but normal kata speed
-
The katas I know are fuku gata itche, Ni, Son and I was curious when I practice I normaly go through each one ten times so 30 fuku gatas. I was wondering everytime you do the kata how many calories you burn and how many calories should I be eating the days I do it 30 times so any help on that? I do them medium speed but with full force.

How many years to black?
chrisw08 replied to senseikellam's topic in Share Your Testing, Grading, or Promotion
In my style my sensai said that if you work hard you can get it in 3 years. He said I could probley get mine in 2 if I worked realy hard on it because the style I did before taught me 3 1/2 of the 13 kata to black belt. I love my style because its simplistic and doesnt take years just to remember all the moves but the moves are effective and simple. My style kenshin kan shorin ryu. I love my style and plan to have my black belt within the next 3 years. We have a girl thats 2nd degree black belt and she has been going there since she was in elementry I think but she got hers by 18 -
thank you but that itsnt my style. There are like 20 styles of mine but its hard to find the classic
