TreeBranch Said: Martial Arts is just a name, if you get out of training what you want. i.e. self defence skills, fitness etc. then it really doesnt matter what people call it. StoneSkin Said: Thats very true. It is self-expression, taking control of your mind and body, and learning to use the techniques you have been show in a way that work best for the individual. -

You make some good points. I don't remember him ever competing in vale tudo contests either but it may have happened. Has for biting and eye gouging i guess they practice the movements for the techniques without actually doing it. i.e stoping to fingers just short of the eyes. They may also practice on a heavy bag or other training equipment. -
Everyone has the right to defend themselves weather they have formal training or not.
-
And if you hold your hands up in a non agressive manner its quiet easy to close your fists and your in a perfect position to attack the opponent and defend yourself.

Yes they teach ROSS and SAMBO.

There are quiet a few k-1 fights shown on pay-tv in australia.

Kirves Said: Shoto-uke = Knife Hand Block. not elbow lock. and uchi-uke = Inside Block. not elbow lock. -
To all you Yanks Have a good day... Don't know what all the ho ha is about.. we dont celebrate none of this in Australia... Anyway have a good day folks

All depends on the situation but most often it would be feet comfortably wide and hands held up covering face and or chest with one or both hands open or closed... All depends on the situation.

What G95champ said is correct and one of the theories behind the light to dark belt system is that you start with white and has you pick up knowledge and train hard your belt gets more dirty until it becomes black from all your experiance. This is why some schools surgest not to wash your belt but i personaly surgest that the belt should be washed just has regularly has your gi for higene purposes. And finally i will say that belts should not be your ultimate aim in martial arts but mearly a guide to progress. After all belts are just a piece of cloth thats supposed to hold your pants up, and alot of the time they dont even do that well.

For a cheap alternative go to a shop that supplies foam and rubber products and buy has much foam has you can affort and strap it to anything around your place and hit that..
-
Tell your partner you only want to try some things and have a turn each doing different techniques rather than doing free sparring, and then build up with defending against and then countering the new techniques and eventually use it in free-sparring.

Yeah i use phone books also ... but please use gaffer tape not spikes... thats so violent .. hehehe Beer-monster- save some money and buy a nice soft heavy bag, rope it up in your garage or from a tree and shin kick that... it wont hurt has much

In modern times makiwara is not as common has in the "old-days" but its important to develop distance, timing, power etc. from striking something and the most common thing these days is a heavy bag. Also if you dont have one try phone books taped to trees.. but dont hit them to hard or your sure to break something.. hehehe
