How did that work out for him?

I have been quiet lucky in that all my training partners dont let their nails get too long. We dont have a requirment at our school, but out of courtesy everyone keeps their nails trimmed.

A fairly common saying that hasnt been mentioned yet: Hit hard parts with soft parts, and hit soft parts with hard parts.

In a fight i saw once (during a football match) a person from my team with no real training, grabbed one of the opposition players with one hand and repeatedly "uppercutted" him. I say "uppercutted" because it was more of a wild swinging motion than a proper uppercut. What im trying to say, is that the motion of the uppercut may be instictive to some people and therefore they may find it more "natural" than other punching techniques. In saying that, i dont find the technique of a proper uppercut any more or less natural than other punching techniques because they all take time and practice to perform correctly.

I agree with this. I remember reading somewhere that the 3 kata were originally 1. After i tried this myself i quickly came to the conclusion that they dont flow from one to the next very easily.

Yes, in our style we do a technique called osae uke (pressing block). Maybe you could explain in more depth what he is "hounding" you about and his interpretation of the concept. I didnt think that the osae concept was that "deep" or something that needed to be repeatedly talking about, but it obviously must be if your teacher is hounding you about it. In the basic sense i dont see that the osae concept needs much explaining, but if your refering to the application of "pressure" in terms of forward momentum and disruption while in close range then that may also fall into the osae category and require a more in depth explanation of the technique.

I realise that this thread is rather old at this point in time. If you are reading this for the first time and are still seeking more information, i would highly recommend you read the following article by Iain Abernethy: http://www.iainabernethy.com/articles/The_Karate_Guard.htm

That depends completely on the school and in some cases even on which day you choose to attend the school. Like traz said, everyone else in the class will be doing it so there is no need to be worried. Look in your local phonebook or ask around to find out the location of some classes.

Pre-emptive attacking--is it legitimate?

A fairly long thread on this topic can be found here: http://www.karateforums.com/viewtopic.php?t=16844 -
Thanks for your explanation.

I thought that Gogen Yamaguchi followed mainly the shinto "faith". I realise he was not the founder of goju but he certainly would have had alot of influence over its direction. Where does the buddhist influence come from?

There is a difference between the basic block which teaches you the full body mechanics of the technique, and the actually application of the technique in a blocking context(we all know that blocks are often locking techniques in application). No, the block is its basic form probably wouldnt be effective on "the street", but its application should be. ( i say "should" because it depends on the individuals interpretation of the technique, which will vary with each person depending on what they see and feel in the technique.) This is very important to remember, the basic of the block is so you can learn the full range of motion of the technique. When it comes to apply the technique in an actual situation you just use the "part" of that full motion you learned earlier. So to answer your original question: Pretty much NEVER. But thats talking about seeing a person perform a block in its most basic form. If you look carefully at a skilled person they will be using small sections of the blocking techniques they learned to cover, deflect, parry etc. Correct, in application the blocks are not ment to look controlled and pretty. Everything flows together so its hard to see individual techniques, but covering, deflecting etc is all happening. YES, if you understand the difference between the basic technique and its application.

You definitely need to beleive in your self and your ability while staying humble, this is alot different to having a big ego.

That sounds excillent but, my everyday stance is with my hands hanging at my sides. Its fairly difficult to do much from this position in a fighting situation.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks, but its not quiet what im after. Im looking for a single file that counts up so i can do situps and so on to the count.

You still need to give everything you've got, with control. Otherwise your just wasting your time. Correct.

Breathing Discussion, techniques, awareness ***
cross replied to towards_deadend's topic in Health and Fitness
The is no set breathing technique taught in our school. We simply follow the: breath out with the effort and breath in while at rest method. Generally its out through the mouth and in through the nose. -
