  1. Hey bushido_man96, Great idea, i hope more people start posting what they have done. Plan on training this arvo. Will let you know what i get upto.
  2. Thanks for hijacking my thread baron! Nah, I dont mind, sounds like your training is going well. Glad to hear your enjoying it. Keep us posted.
  3. Agreed. Personally, i made the choice a few months back that i wasnt going to drink at all from that point. And have stuck with it. Not that i was a big drinker to start with, just the occasional few at parties etc. I just didnt really see the point anymore. Its expensive, and has limited or no health benifits. I also limit the amount of parties/clubs etc i attend these days, to avoid the kind of behaviour that occurs at such places. But like others have said, it depends on the person. Everyone has a choice. There are some who enjoy a drink after work etc and thats fine by me, however i dont do it myself because like some have said, most of it tastes fairly plain, and its not something i want to spend my time doing.
  4. Cool. I have that book, but has been some time since I read it. I like to read, but I don't retain information very well! Haha, I dont think its something important enough to remember... which makes me wonder why i do...
  5. No worries, pretty sure i read it in "idiots guide to karate" or a book similar to that, in the section about uniforms.
  6. One theory i have read(not sure how true it is, and didnt see the need to look into something so trivial) is that during traditional japanese funeral services they would wrap the body in a gown with right over left. So wearing a gi left over right signifies life, while right over left signifies death.
  7. I think everyone would agree with this. Thats why its so important against multiple attackers to maintain the pre-fight stage and use your verbal ability to diffuse or manipulate the situation to your advantage, allowing you to escape if you can talk your way out, or lower your opponents guard and raise their ego allowing you to pre-empt without warning(to them) and increase your chance of walking/running away. The most important thing is to act first. Weather that means physically, verbally, psychologically, or a combo of these. The 2 worst things you can do are: 1. Allow them to take control of the situation by not taking action, and become a pawn in their game. and 2. Give up, sure even against one person with an intent to hurt you, its going to be an up-hill battle. But does that mean you should quit, or even worse not try and prepare yourself before hand for the reality of gang type attacks?
  8. I suppose it depends on your definition of mixed martial arts, it could be just mixing more than 1 style, or mixing styles that specifically cover all ranges and aspects of combat, or training specifically for the sport of MMA... plus a whole lot of grey areas... its just a label.
  9. Found an interesting article that relates to this topic: http://www.24fightingchickens.com/2006/08/10/children-who-teach-karate/ Good read.
  10. A fairly quick way to get over these fears and erase these problems from your training is to strap on some headgear (if you feel the need). Get your training partner to wear a pair of the largest boxing gloves they can find(16 oz most likely). Stand with your back to a wall and have your partner throw loose, slow, light punches at you... that will make contact(not hard obviously) with your face if you dont move your head out of the way. Also you can work on keeping your hands up by having your partner do a similar thing and if you drop your hands they can tap you on the place you leave open. Gradually increase the speed and add a little more power to the punches. From there you can build up on the drill adding counter attacks from yourself, footwork, etc. The important thing is to be spontaneous with your movement and make sure your partner is attacking randomly so you dont get into a set pattern. The only problem with this drill is that very few karate schools would be willing to do this. I have seen some that do, but its a rarety. They tend to opt for different drills like the ones others have mentioned.
  11. Thanks for the info.
  12. Im not sure i see the point of this? If you already know that they arnt going to hit you, and all you have to do is stand there, i dont see why anyone would move???
  13. When i used to do kata i found it useful to video myself doing each one has i learned it. If you have the change to do that you could start up your own collection.
  14. Havnt read that book specifically, but have read alot of Marc's material and found it very infomative and straight to the point. Before purchasing the book, perhaps you could read some of the articles on his site (theres alot on there) to see if you like his writing style and the info... if you do id say the book would follow a similar idea.
  15. Thats true. I suppose it depends on your method of attack. If your going to be throwing striking combinations aiming for a destructive knock out this is probably correct. But in self defence that would not be my main aim.
  16. Plan what your going to do. Do a mock run of your presentation beforehand if you get the chance... And most importantly, be confident. You most likely wouldnt have been invited to instruct if you didnt have what it takes to do the job. Best of luck.
  17. I agree about the gross motor skills, however i dont think that always equates to closed fist. To someone with no training it probably would.. but it would also mean wild swings, not straight shots. However with a small amount of training you can get the straight shots working and considering the delivery of a palm and closed fist is identical in everything except the hand position, its quiet possible to make palms your natural response. Do you feel that to be a good or bad thing?
  18. Obviously the palm/punch range is longer than elbows and forearms though.
  19. Worst probably my knee, poped out and back in on 2 seperate occasions.
  20. Watching a documentry recently it was interesting that they mentioned ali having parkinsons "syndrome" not parkinsons disease. They also noted that the syndrome has a number of causes, but they beleive in ali's case its from repeated trauma to the brain stem.
  21. Interesting article on the merits of punching vs palm strikes to the head: http://www.mwarrior.com/punch.htm I personally train using only open hands for strikes above the shoulders, and fists for anything below. Thats when training in the context of self defence, obviously for sports type training, if your wearing gloves it makes sense to punch the head. Thoughts?
  22. In addition, if im "grappling" without a partner i prefer to throw my heavy bag around, cant work locks on it, but you get the feel of weight transfer and the weight ontop of you if you work from underneath. Limited, but if you aint got a partner it does the trick.
  23. I made one a few years back. Pretty basic, old track pants and jumper stuffed with rags and plastic bags, duct taped up all the opening. Didnt use it a great deal.
  24. Best of luck baron, be sure to tell us how it goes.
