Hi. I've been getting sharp stabbing headaches that last usually not even a second followed by really painful, dull headaches that can last for hours. I've been getting these headaches almost everyday for a long time and recently they've gotten worse and I get them every day. I haven't had any head trauma of any sort so that rules injury out of the equation. The closest thing i can relate these headaches to are cluster headaches, however, the symptoms don't always add up. I get pressure behind the eyes and stuffy nose on the affected side (left) of my head, which is common for these types of headaches but just today the pain has moved into my left ear as well. I'm getting an MRI on Friday but was wondering if anyone had any advice/input/insight as to whats going on. Thanks!

Alright, so recently I started training at an MMA gym and I have been using the gloves provided but now I can afford my own and would like to know what type of boxing gloves should someone who's 140lbs and trains daily but also fights in amateur bouts be looking at? Thanks for the help!

The best defense for a school fight is to stay out of any drama and to always be respectful..cliche, I know but it's all true. If you want my opinion, I would start lifting at the school, join the wrestling team, and if you insist on teaching yourself focus on boxing punches but keep everything simple. That way if or when you can get a teacher you will know some ground fighting and the simplicity of a boxer's punch is much more easy to learn on your own than wing chins chain punching is to learn on your own.

You cannot learn a martial art and become effective all by yourself. Who's going to correct your mistakes? Plus if you pick up any nasty habits they're hard to break. If you don't mind me asking, where are you from and how far are you willing to travel? Maybe I could search some places online and have you check them out because in all honesty you should really train with a real instructor. Oh, before I forget, keep your mind open...wing chun may sound good but you may change your mind and figure out you like another martial art..perhaps a non Chinese art.

Roundhouse
datguy replied to datguy's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Thanks for the input everybody. I've always chambered my roundhouse kicks and being somewhat new to other styles was just curious. Thanks again! -
Hey, I was just curious as to why some martial arts chamber their roundhouse like taekwondo while others just throw the kick from the ground up? What are the pros and cons of each way?

Good Muay Thai/MMA School
datguy replied to datguy's topic in MMA, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, and Competitive Fighting
Unfortunately that's about as authentic as it gets around here. Evolve MMA usually has good reviews so I'll check it out but regardless I have a contusion in my foot and it hurts so bad lol no training for a little while. -

Alright, so nobody's sure what to think about this school but could someone tell me what I should look for in a good Muay Thai gym or instructor? Thanks. -
Which Side of the Board Should face the Board Breaker?
datguy replied to april's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
Alright I guess I can see where you are coming from. I do TKD and my school doesn't break, Olympic spar, or anything like that. My teacher is from Korea so he's very traditional. I've broken boards before but it just doesn't do anything for me. -
Don't mention it..it's cool. I know PTSD's nothing to be ashamed of but I'm just saying I dont have any of the symptoms. Maybe the title was misleading...It's not flashbacks so much as it is I catch myself going over it in my head very clearly. It's not daily or anything..just every so often if I'm just sitting around.
-
It definitely isn't PTSD...Its just that i can remember it as if it was yesterday.

When has the martial arts way of life I guess one could say "clicked" for you? Like for me it just all clicked and made sense all of a sudden. Anyone else have the same thing?

So a little over a year ago I got into a bad fight. I mean it was pretty dirty and I've been in a number of fights but this one was by far the worst. Though I came through on top and wasn't injured too badly, the way it started out couldv'e ended badly had I not been trained. Anyways, I often find myself "zoned out" replaying the fight in my head. These flashbacks don't bother me in any way, shape, or form but I was just wondering is this normal? Anyone else have the same thing? I use this fight as a lesson on what works and what doesn't and it has definitely helped me with more recent situations so I guess nothing's wrong, right?

Which Side of the Board Should face the Board Breaker?
datguy replied to april's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
At my school we don't break boards or anything at all. In all honesty, what purpose does it serve? I'm not downgrading it but when are you going to have to break a piece of plywood in the street? That's time you could be using to learn how to defend against a knife attack per say. -
What makes you cry? The ignorance of so many towards the martial arts haha What makes you smile? Seeing someone "click" one day and having a new understanding What makes you say "WOW"? McDojos What makes you pause? That why did I do that moment. What makes you angry? Taking a while to understand a new concept What makes you laugh? Funny mistakes What makes you think? Philosophy What makes you try? My love for the martial arts What makes you surrender? Only I am in control of surrendering so I don't What makes you respect? Anyone with a mutual respect for all martial arts

No..IP Man was very skilled don't get me wrong but he only knew the style of wing chun whereas Bruce Lee used no style as a style thus making him way more adaptable..sounds like jason needs to step into a dojo and lay off the movies. By the way, did this discussion happen to be a result of Spike's "I Am Bruce Lee"

While tumbling, I somehow managed to dive forward and land on my head..that was fun! Also, I once managed to knee my own face breaking my nose
-
Don't worry about age. You're still pretty young. Just start training and enjoy your time with the art but don't expect to be in the same shape as everyone else at first. Anything worth while comes only through blood, sweat, and tears.

Hey everyone, I just thought I'd post a light-hearted thread for people to post funny "martial mistakes" and maybe share a few funny stories about training or something of the sort. Enjoy!

Thanks for the pointers. Two years in a McDojo has really taken its toll..undoing the wrong technique is quite a challenge at times

Hey. I've been doing martial arts for a few short years now and ever since I've taken up TKD my roundhouse has been a major problem. For some reason no matter what I do my kick always angles upwards. Am I chambering it wrong? Also my sidekick is powerful but my left leg has a hard time extending straight out..it's as though my knee won't not bend. Any help and advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Running is the first and best option because streetfighting is dangerous, painful, and a haven for legal issues to hide. However if i had to fight I would do whatever is necessary. You can't say "He's gonna do this so then I'll do that." Until it goes down you just have to improvise, adapt, and overcome.

Hey everybody. I live in the Akron, OH area and have been looking for a martial arts tournament to watch. If anyone knows about anything, any info would be appreciated. The plan is to watch a couple and eventually compete. I'll go and watch anything but preferably traditional TKD or MMA. Thanks for your time.
