Yep - No touch KO was a bad remark. Still I think that there are a similar hype with Iron Body and Pressure Point. Both have some thing valid, but is it to that extent that claims are made? Why don't you see an Iron body master in a MMA fight? Or a pressure point dude? Or a dude that can master both? Can take punches and know were to strike so that it hurts like hell - or knocks out his opponent? Probably for the same reason that you don't see an Aikido master in a MMA figth. It's against their nature Just to sum this up. I don't see any harm in training Iron Body - checked it up from web - and I don't see any harm in training Pressure points or Aikido for that matter. Qikong and acupuncture are great wisdoms.

Other-defense against a knife?
xo-karate replied to JusticeZero's topic in General Martial Arts Discussion
What will happen if you try something and he will cut the boy? Would it be better to give the money and let him go --- and let police deal with it later? -
I'd say you did well Congratulations! Go buy a new belt, unless the is a tradition in school to give out belts like in BJJ. I don't think it's so common in karate classes.

Very interesting this iron body method. So you can take punches after training. I just had a tread about pressure point and there was a man who can knock you out with out touching... Would that be nice to see them fight - iron body vs. pressure point:-)

I liked it too. So pressure points might not be best to practice in my BJJ. I need to find some friends to do some karate with. Probably problem is with my self - I've always liked sparring and again pressure points and friendly sparring ... not so good mix:-) I tend to have issues with traditional karate - it's so damn orthodox and all variations are signs of not respecting your sensei ... or something like that.

I have no problem claiming to be experienced. I learn new things every day and being 55 - It's a lot of learning - and experience. Learning is easy, but forgetting is even easier. So I've learned a lot, but can't do much:-) Experience is helps me to realize it.

Home study can be effective, but it's not easy and it can lead to bad habits. I've done Gracie Combatives and my problem was to get a dedicated partner. I think that one partner is not enough and some times would be nice to have a partner who knows more than you do. I'd use time at home for drilling movement or building up physical condition. I do what dvd:s with one hour lessons about BJJ - to try to understand the concepts, but rolling is when you learn. I'd say you can learn at home like Gracie garage - having 4 - 5 partners at your place and rolling few hours per day:-) Maybe 4 - 5 hours and it would be nice if the partners change now and then to get new moves. (Real problem is that you don't get feedback when you are learning by your self. )

BJJ vs. Judo

And Karate in perfect for every Judoka? -
Thank tallgeese, I kind of came to the same conclusion. In regular rolling I'm not sticking my elbow out or pushing my knee in the manner to cause pain - we should I try pressure points for the same reason.

Building muscle that directly applies to fighting!
xo-karate replied to The Greatest Disciple's topic in Health and Fitness
Nice list of movements. Maybe I should have asked about a more specific are - like functional workouts to enhance punches - or grappling. Same movement has very different results with different combinations of load, rest and reps. (And developing punches is not a hand - arm thing - so this might be a difficult issue to discuss.) But thanks Wastelander for you reply . -

Just a comment, I asked on a different post, if any one wanted to share their functional workout. No replies.. -

I'm sure you can get stiff and loose range of movement by lifting weights - and also by not lifting weights. One important point is that you need strength to move your body. TO be fast in say punching you need co-ordination and control of nervous system. To get strong is two elements - nervous system and muscle mass. Neither of them hinder your movement unless in extreme situations. (Stretching and doing movements in large range of movement will prevent it.) 5x5 is not actually bulking you up- it's not a muscle mass routine - it's strength routine. So 5x5 is ok, but I also like functional - it's inspiring and it includes jumps and balance and often also anaerobic challenge. And one point is that all workouts are not equal to all individuals - we react differently. We need to listen to our body and mind to find what works and how often to workout. (One things is sure - it takes time - years of working out to become strong...) -

I understand the idea behind functional training. The idea is that you don't grow your muscles, but practice to move. Some routines like 5 x5 are not body building routines, but more like over all strength programs. I like 5x5 or 2 x6 and always add weights after completing your sets. I also like functional training with it's various movements and add ons like kettle ball, tires, gym balls and stuff. I think the best results comes from mixing your workouts. Maybe 4 - 6 weeks and then change it. Or do 2 times per week a classic gym workout and once a week a functional training. For fighting best results come from fighting:-) Just add some intensity or use just a little heavier cloves... -
Maybe pressure points are not the perfect direction for me. My main goal is to get fit and keep fit. Pressure points might be a little too fine for me. Less thinking and more action:-)

I do xo-karate:-) It stand for extra old. I'm not very old, I just have an early date of birth - something 50's. My base is in wadoryu.

"George Dillman is a martial arts instructor and member of Black Belt magazine's Hall of Fame (1997)" for wikipedia. Look like Dillman has done something right. (And looks like he might have a fixation for no touch knockout:-) Ok - so he is a little extrovert, but has a long history in Martial Arts. I don't know id name dropping like Ali is good... If he has not "lost it", looking at his history, I'd say he know a lot about pressure points. Can't find him on any Hall of Fame list?

Kaj got his 7 dan from George A. Dillman. website is not very good http://www.kyushoaikijutsu.com/eng/etusivu/ I'll try some pressure point in my BJJ and we'll see if it's working. (Just need to make sure how firm my contact in breaking grips is aloud to be. - Kind of when it's blocking with a hit and when just dropping my arm as a "fast" push...)

aikido vs jiu jitsu
xo-karate replied to hazeleyes202's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
In aikido you do not defeat your opponent. You just make him not dangerous. Mental state does not have anger or fier. BUT it's often a written play with very stright rules, like grip with closes hand to closes wrist or punch with as step and so on. Techniques are not tested like in BJJ. In BJJ opponent aims to fake and suprise you and you tap,if your technique fails you. Also BJJ has rules, but much more room for modifying attacks and defence. I don't see much same in aikido and BJJ. Maybe other is folk dance and the other is break danse. Both have somethong to do with dancing but look very different. -
I've had 1kyu for 35 years and 10 was actively teaching and senior rank. I got tiered of teaching and not been able to practise. I've done some attemps to start again but there are no wadoryu clubs near by so I've trained with other styles. I don't feel like graduating to dan as basics are a little different. Do I feel like a dan...I don't know. I feel like a man who is trying to keep in shape and like to learn martial arts.

Why am I asking. It looked impressive on a youtube dvd series. I have not been training karate for some years. (Hitting and kicking a heavy bag, but not actually wearing a gi and training with a partner.) Kind of looking for some inspiration to take karate back to my training. Kyusho might be difficult, but I might get some training partners just asking around. I did send an email to a finnish 7dan in Kyusho but he never answered. I'll call him and ask his advice.

Maybe karate in olympics would backfire and make a more clear split with traditional karate. Now in some case people practise sports karate and think it's effective as self-defence. (It happened to me. I've always done sports karate, and my first experience in a fullcontact sparring in Han Mo Do was a learning experience. Opponent did not stop even though I landed perfect scoring hits.) Ok. Olympics have not developed Judo to two different approaches- traditional vs sports, but Judo has had a competition element always. I like BJJ because it's so clear. In judo you win by warnings that your opponent gets from being passive. In karate you win by what the referie sees. Also in boxing there is the same depate, but fencing in clear.

Who has a written game plan?
xo-karate replied to xo-karate's topic in BJJ, Judo, Jujitsu, Aikido, and Grappling Martial Arts
Lots of good stuff here. Thanks. Yesterday at the open mat. I did get to test some techniques -like we stoped and asked and uke taught me. He has a long judo background.(he also adviced me not to try drop down seoi nage...my technique is not good enough.) I also got some comments after our rolliång session. Kind of "just before you tapped, I would have used this and this technique". It was nice, but not very helpful as could not remember the positions I was in or the grips my opponent had. First idea was to take some rolling on video. I need to do it. I am a little afraid what it will look like -
Do we have people who have knowledge about training pressure point karate? Kyusho?

New rules should not be a copy of karate nor taekwondo nor kickboxing but make it possible for all to compete with in same criteria. If it's with protective gear, so be it. Ofcourse this would mean that there would not be much relation with traditional karate and olymbic "karate"/ combat sports. BUT there a very many rules in karate competitions at the moment, too. I don't think that mutual rules can be agreed on. It's politics. I just said that I think that would be the best option.
