I'd like to form a group that supports each other in serious academic study of martial arts. Serious like masters thesis or doctors thesis or just research articles in research journals. Idea would be to comment on each others work. Any one interested?

Becoming a BJJ instructor - any ideas?
xo-karate replied to xo-karate's topic in Instructors and School Owners
I started a GJJ unofficial garage at my work place:-) Bold move, but it worked. Looks like a got 2 other teachers to join and one is taking his two kids (age 16 and 18 ) to roll with us. I'm bringing my godson (age 18 ) so we'll start with 6 persons:-) I'm hoping to introduce "slow roll" in very early stage. -
Purity of YOUR style!
xo-karate replied to Dobbersky's topic in Choosing a Martial Art, Comparing Styles, and Cross-Training
Pure : "unmixed with any other matter" Martial Arts are developed in a long period of time and technique is always developing - every new master will bring something new and every time will demand different techniques. Purity would mean a stopped time and comparing it to something that has been - or that some one can define what is pure and other will accept it. There is nothing wrong in training traditional karate - you can call it pure or there is nothing wrong in "hanshi -karate" where the senior defines orthodox-techniques - and claims it pure. And I don't say that the most effective techniques are PURE - no they are just right for the right person and right situation. So what are we after here? Some kind of technique where class is doing things the same way - aca correctly - pure? -
Tallgeese, I'm repeating 1. lesson today for the 3rd time in a week. I've modified the lesson so that we practice after most of the instructions. Not just when we should. You get more reps that way and instruction comes in smaller "bytes". (On every new lesson has been a new student also.) Today I've asked the new student - my godson - to watch the lessons before he comes to roll with me. Hope he does - learning would be faster:) I like the progressive feature of Gracie lessons - everything is build over what is learned before. I also used the standard variation of mount at our club to roll over my partners from a drill, where the goal was to stay in mount:) It was a surprise! Too easy to be expected. Also I like the idea that you can mentally drill lesson 1 and future lessons too. It's easier to do mental training when you have a clear lesson plan and instruction that you can also watch. 10/7 Gracie lesson 1

I got 27 answers to my questionnaire. Gender did not seem to affect answers, but it might be due to small number of responses. Only 5 was female. From the reasons to practice Martial Arts four most important were: “I want to improve my skills”, “I want to learn new skills”, “I like to have fun” and “I like the challenge” Four least important were: “My parents or close friends want me to play”, ” I want to be popular”, “I like to feel important”, “I want to gain status or recognition” How important are the following to you? Most important was technical ability of the instructor and almost as important was learning self defence skills. Not at all important was “progressing through grades” or “cost of participating”. What martial arts do you practice and how much per week? Most of who answered practice: karate or “other”. This was not a very well constructed question. How much do you practice martial arts weekly? Answers varied from 1 – 3 hours to more than 7 hours per week. I’d estimate that average is 5 hours per week. Do you use instructional videos? Most of us watch an instructional video once a week and also tries out the technique with a partner. I also did a factor analysis ( not very liable as I should have had 10 times more answers). BUT this factor analysis tells that most important reason is “friendship”, next "skill development", “fitness” and “competing”. “Self defense” was a factor, but not very strong one. I think that most of the people that answered my questionnaire are very active on the forum and also active in training martial arts. This might not give correct image of all the participants on the forum. (Thread has been read 200 times, but answers are "only" 27.) Thank you all - I'll leave the questionnaire open for a while. (I am pleased with this experiment:-)

At the questionnaire is 23 answers at the moment! I think it's very well done. I'll wait until weekend to do my first analysis (SPSS software is not my strong point.) About Karate ... I started with a list of martial arts http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_martial_arts. Too much (I did not even include Han Moo Do even though I done it.) It's looking good - no reason to slow down:-) Can we get 7 more to break 30?

I'd like to know what makes you tick - why are you doing martial arts? I've make a quite long questionnaire to find out who is here and why. Please take time to answer all the questions. I will report answers back to the forum. I'll even try to analyse answers:-) http://phd.dvreport.com/limesurvey/index.php?sid=58151&lang=en
