  1. Hi, I've often heard some (non-Kyokushin) people say that Kyokushin is only good for big and strong people. Being of average height and quite slim (read: thin), I'm curious. Does anyone here who has actually done Kyokushin (or any of the offshoots!) have comments (either from personal experience or having observed someone else) on this issue.
  2. I haven't personally been to any SBG but many very high ranking and highly respected experts think highly of them and I've seen SBG recommended by several top martial artists, so I'd go there any day had I the chance!
  3. 80's heavy and 90's nu metal
  4. Sad. I agreed with most of your posts. And I liked the posts I didn't agree with even more.
  5. My absolute favorite is The Others. Even though it is just a modern ghost movie, still... I love it!
  6. If you ever ever need to get into "bad company" you need to have tattoos that look like a) you're a tough guy or b) you were in a jail. For example, I work in security and private detective business and sometimes it helps to have a jail tattoo. To get into the company I want.
  7. I kinda like the speed limits.
  8. I liked Tenchu 1, but disliked Tenchu 2. Wrath is more close to 1 than 2, but has it's problems. You constantly drop into bottomless pitts you never knew were there. I like it's atmosphere, it's more like 1 than 2, but it's not modern enough. It lacks some stuff that are commonplace in today's sneaking games. For example, if someone sees a dead body they get alarmed, but you can't move a dead body. And when someone sees it, they forget it in an instant (and get alarmed again, when they find it again). Also, there is a certain (exact) range the enemy sees you, for example, you can rapple your way away from a chasing enemy and leave him wondering where on Earth you went even you went straight away from him in front of him, not that far from him. So the AI sucks. To sum it up: better than 2 but worse than 1. Would have been great 5 years ago, but seems old and lacking today.
  9. Japanese arts (jujutsu, judo, iaido, iaijutsu, etc.) do have their kata but their kata is not solo but partner work (except iaido and iaijutsu which have solo forms). Just go see any book on Judo and you'll see what I mean, they have two-person katas which don't resemble the solo forms of Okinawan karate. I don't know if Aikido has katas but classical Japansese jujutsu styles have plenty of them. A typical judo or jujutsu kata lasts about 2-20 seconds and contains attacks and counterattacks and the final submission.
  10. One of the main tenets of JKD is to focus equally on all fighting ranges, instead of specializing on one or two of them. So, percent wise, there's less trapping and more other stuff in JKD than in Wing Chun. But as said, JKD trains for all the ranges, so trapping is involved, but the trap techniques are from several arts, including but not confined to Wing Chun, Kali/Escrima and Muay Thai. Thus JKD trapping has lots of differences when compared to pure Wing Chun trapping, but also similarities.
  11. Dillman is one of the best known people who teach a form of Kyusho-jitsu. Oyata is another master, better skilled, less known. Here in Europe, we have what is called "European Kyusho Jitsu Tuite", it combines pressure points with contact karate/jujutsu/judo/boxing/wrestling and contains baton and hand cuff training so it is suitable for law enforcement and security personnel.
  12. And usually that really isn't even the issue. A street fight doesn't start like your average sparring session, two people facing each other starting to dance back and forth exchanging punches. In a street confrontation you may already have been taken down to grappling range when you first realize you are being attacked in the first place. Someone tackles you from behind or takes a chokehold and you don't have the choice of trying to knock him down before starting grappling...
  13. If you are into self defence, go to CH. If you are into fitness, competition et. al. go to the other school.
  14. Yes it is. And if the judges find out I have trained fighting they put me in for a long time. The best for me is to grapple and if in public, constantly yell aloud "clam down, calm down or you'll get hurt", that way the witnesses will tell a tale that supports mine.
  15. You need to spar to create reflexes. Solo training won't create reflexes.
  16. Today (sunday) was the second day of a local Systema seminar. From what I gathered during two days: very effective, very controversial. Everything is done in the opposite you usually do. They really go "with the opponent". When punched, you just go with it. No blocking, no diverting, nothing. Just go with it, do some natural stance altercations and he falls down. Take a hold and he's yours. That's what i got from 2 days of training.
  17. It always depends. Always. I work as a security guard in a country where I can go to prison for punching someone attacking me. I need grappling ability to subdue my opponents without making too much damage to them. It all comes down to law and what you are ready, willing and allowed to do to your opponents.
  18. That's right. You can even find a finnish instructor there, even someone on this board has gone way over his good night sleep to show there aren't any finnish JKD teachers in existence...
  19. All martial arts should be about reality. If it's not about reality, it's not martial.
  20. Kokusai is a typical jujutsu curriculum and focuses heavily on standup grappling (locks, throws, takedowns, holds). Kokusai has kicks and punches too. See the webpage's list of techniques more closely; you'll find "atemijutsu" in the list.
  21. Quite standard Wing Chun. Same can be said of any brick breaking, eh?
  22. Hi, are you the same JKDChick who frequents the Bullshido.com forum?
  23. Best: Memento. Any James Bond with Brosnan or Dalton in it. Bourne Identity (the new version). Sleepy Hollow. Dark City. Event Horizon. Runner ups: Fight Club. Sixth Sense. Copland. Convergence.
