  1. If you can learn to focus your feelings, they can create a focused power you don't have yet. When you get hit, and you feel like your getting angry, instead of exploding, consentrate on releasing the energy you feel in smaller amounts, spread it out a little bit in each block and strike, instead of all at once. The best way for me to describe it is, don't explode just burn, you won't tire out as fast either. If i sound crazy, then i probably am, but this is how i learned control and focus.
  2. Thanks for all your help, i have some century, everlast, and kp equipment, but it's all getting old. I have never bought any kind of shield, because i never had anyone to hold one outside of the dojo, and they had their own. Now i need one to help teach my kids, who are getting to strong to let practice kicks without a shield.
  3. In our sue happy society, i can see the sparring problem being an issue. Back befor public dojo's this is how the martial arts were taught, father to son. If they only had 1 child they had to sparr with the kid themselves. I have always sparred with my boys, and when i want to give them a different look, i change stances, styles, and intensity levels. No it's not the same as having another kid to sparr with, but if your just teaching them what you know, and don't care about tournaments they can learn just as much. This is just my opinion, but i believe as long as the kid wants to learn, and is enjoying learning, thats all that matters.
  4. You do have to worry about the ballance between teaching to soft, and pushing to hard. Thats why i only teach the boys 1 hour a day twice a week, sometimes we run over if the boys are really enjoying what we are doing. I believe this can be done, you just have to remember, your teaching a child, so no matter if he's yours or a stranger, keep it fun but still serious.
  5. Welcome, and stick to it, all the hard work is worth it.
  6. Thanks, i'll check them out.
  7. Thats the thing, i haven't bought any training equipment in a long time, and i don't think the place that i used to shop is still there. I don't know how much anything costs anymore, and money is alittle tight right now. There's only 3 of us for right now, so what i need is some ideas on brands and costs. It doesn't have to be top of the line stuff, just good enough to not explode the first time i kick it. Right now i'm taking the top off my free standing bag, which is hard to hold on to.
  8. I'm looking for a decent kicking shield, but don't have a big budget, any suggestions, on brand and average price.
  9. Swimming will work your whole body, my whole left side and back was damaged, and swimming was the first and best workout they would let me do. My strength came back faster and farther than the doctor could believe. When it was time to do physical therapy the doctor told me i was already beyond what he wanted the therapist to do for me, but i do have a habit of pushing myself harder than i should, sometimes.
  10. I love the fact that someone else wants to take the time to teach their kids this way. I find that i'm actually more of a perfectionist with my boys, because there is only 2 of them, and they want to learn. Now i know i can't give them rank, but i can feed their love of the martial arts with all that i have learned over the years. I tried to get my kids to study under someone else, but they want to learn from me, and i'm very proud to be the one they chose. They don't care about rank or tournaments, although they are becoming very good young kickboxers, and grapplers. Good luck in your quest to teach your son, i believe if more kids learned the respect for themselves and others, that the martial arts teaches, that we would have a better world to live in.
  11. I recomend swimming, it's great for loosening and strengthening the joints without impact. It helped me alot, mine was more my arm and leg joints, but it helped my back too.
  12. I'm doing the same thing, with my 13 and 16 year olds. They want to spar, but the 16 year old is 6' and 170lbs, and the 13 year old isn't big enough or agressive enough to hold up to him. If you were close i would say your boy could spar with the younger one. My wife worries about me sparring at all with my bad arm, so i'm trying to find someone for both of them to spar with.
  13. Thanks I'll try rolling it around more, that might help, i do that some, but not as much as i should. The doctors just look at me like i'm crazy and should just be happy to be here, but thats not who i am.
  14. Do you have access to a fencing gym, thats one good way to learn fast attack and defence with just your right hand. Then try it without the weapon, buy adding your own hand techniques to use as empty hand defence and attack. It should be helpful and probably a cool change of pace.
  15. I was in a car accident 4 years ago, and my left arm was damaged very badly. I have 3 plates 24 screws and my wrist, elbow and shoulder were all dislocated, and damaged, and won't take impact or fast movement anymore. I just started teaching again, after 4 years of working on changing strategies, and adapting my techniques to keeping my left arm back out of the way, using my right hand for defence, grabs, and quick strikes, and mostly kicks, knees, and sweeps for attacks. So i think i might have some ideas for you to try, if you think this is going to be a long term problem.
  16. I was never extremely flexable, but one of my injuries in my accident was a big shot to my hip. Now i'm trying to get the side kick and round kick flexability back, but it's not going well, because my hip wants to either lock or pop out, instead of getting more flexable. Any ideas that might help.
  17. I agree, you should feel different about your abilities soon. If not try doing some reallistic sparring, from striking to the ground.
  18. When i was still fighting i was 5'10" 165-175, and loved taller fighters. They had more reach, but i liked to use short power strikes from inside. The only problem was they knew that, so i cross trained with some other styles, and learned miss direction, and long short combo's to get the openings i needed. Something like this might give someone at your high level, the element of surprise with anyone that has seen you fight befor. I know it worked for me, i was 5-0-1 after i did this, and the 1 draw was a taller, higher ranked fighter that i should have beat, but i refuse to win buy doing permanant damage.
  19. I've studied alot of different arts, and agree that you should look at what is close to you, and decide what one you like the best. All martial arts have advantages, and can be used for selfdefence, but only if you enjoy them enough to stick to it. Size only matters if you let it, one of my private students was a 5 ft 110 pound girl, and i had her slipping a grab from behind, and hip tossing a 5'10" 225 pound guy to the ground, so she could get distance and escape. It wasn't because of me, it was because she wanted it that bad. So if you want it bad enough, you can make any art work, nomatter what size you are. Good luck and let us know what the decide to study.
  20. I would say the more experience you have in the arts, the easier it would be to learn online, but time and dedication can overcome alot. When you look for a training partner, i would try to find someone with a different martial arts background then you. Then maybe it would give you a different point of view on each leason. I could be wrong, but i think it could help.
  21. I wasn't sure how to descibe it, but yes every step adds another punch to the combo going from 1 punch to start and ends up being a 6 punch combo. I'm glad you liked it, i always thought it was a good drill for timing, power, and endurance.
  22. Just about every place i've studied has used leg kicks, but they weren't worried about tournaments, just defence, and kick boxing. My younger cousin was very good at throwing, and blocking leg kicks. I saw him win a fight against a much higher ranked fighter, with a shin block, outside leg kick, and inside leg kick combo, that put the guy on the mat because his leg was too numb to stand on. It was the first time i had seen leg kicks done well, and i was convinced of their usefulness.
  23. I use outside-in as a lead in for a side kick with the same leg, or to knock a weapon out of line with my body. The inside-out i use as a lead in for a round kick with the other leg. I would say as for using it on it's own for an attack, you would have to be either very good at it, or in a Van Damme movie where looking cool makes people fall down, but thats just a power kicking guys opinion. (I do believe all techniques are useful to someone, and the basics we learn have been around longer than any of us. So learn them all, and choose the ones that work for you in practical application.)
  24. Ok, on the heavy bag, you alternate between left and right stance, and your thowing it as an increasing combo 25 times each. 1] 25 left jabs 2] 25 right jabs 3] 25 1-2 left jab then right strait punch(reverse punch) 4] 25 1-2 right jab then left strait punch(reverse punch) 5] 25 1-2 left-right then left low hook 6] 25 1-2 right-left then right low hook 7] 25 1-2 left-right, low hook left, upper cut right 8] 25 1-2 right-left, low hook right, upper cut left 9] 25 1-2 left-right, low hook left, upper cut right, high hook left 10]25 1-2 right-left, low hook right, upper cut left, high hook right 11]25 1-2 left-right, low hook left, upper cut right, high hook left, high hook right 12]25 1-2 right-left, low hook right, upper cut left, high hook right, high hook left Give it a try and tell me what you think, if i made it confusing i'm sorry, i'm used to showing it in person, not writing it down.
  25. I have done multiple oponent sparring, and i not only thought it was helpful, but i kind of enjoyed it. Now i will say that high kicks and long developing moves don't work, but it can be done, at least 2 or 3 on 1. I don't know about 4 or 5 on 1, but i know one guy that did it when he had no choice. His rank at the time was Shihan, and 4 guys in an alley jumped him, and all 5 including shihan went to the hospital, because shihan broke his elbow on the last guys head. I always tell people that ask me what i would do in that situation, that i would do only as much as necessary to escape, and stay alive.
