  1. While teaching my boy's the other day, i went for a possition change while grappling with my older son, and he caught me in an arm bar. Being the teacher and the dad, i thought, ok i can get out of this. Well 2 weeks later the doctors says it isn't torn, it's just inflamed, and it is starting to get better. The lesson is, no matter how good you think you are, you still have to pay attention, and be humble enough to admit when you've been caught in a mistake.
  2. I have tried for years, and still don't have that much self control. That man is either a saint or an idiot. The punk could have produced a knife anytime, and he was way to close, and the guy was pinned on 3 sides. There's a difference between controled, and stupid. The difference in the world today unfortunarely is usually death.
  3. Thanks, that sounds like a good place to start.
  4. I love the grappling arts the most, even though most of my experience is in the striking arts, and at 5'11" 250lbs i can hit, but i would rather be punched or kicked, than land on concrete from 4-6 feet in the air. Standing you have to block and strike, if the guy is on the ground with the wind knocked out of him from being thrown, you can just walk away.
  5. I think the cowboys can start winning, if they stop thinking about how talented they are, and just go out and play football. Thats what happened to the steelers last year, they thought everyone was going to roll over and let them win, but they got everyones best game and they missed the playoffs because of it.
  6. I think chasing him off is ok, but not going after him. I would only confront him in defence of my life and family, but i have 2 swords, 3 dogs, 4 martial artists, and 8 guns in my house that say he will run away. Not to mention chasing him sounds like to much work. To be honest, i try to live by what i teach, and that is the most important defence is be aware of the situation, and do what is needed to protect yourself and those you care about. Property can be replaced, but your life can't. However my dogs do love my truck, and they sleep 30 feet away from it.
  7. It's a blast, i think i look forward to it as much as they do. I haven't enjoyed training this much in a long time.
  8. Well i love teaching my boys on my own, but i think i'm doing to good a job. My older son Zack has beaten me twice now in stand up points sparring, and Zack and Justin went at it for at least 5 minutes befor Zack won 3-2. I'm just glad that my wife didn't see me block with my bad arm(bad idea dummy)that hurt, and ended my concentration. Grappling was a different story, because i grab and throw with my right side, and just use my left for control. Zack almost had me once with a choke, but i got out and got him with an arm bar. Justin is better at stand up fighting, because he's not strong enough yet for grappling with us, but he's fast and flexable enough to be a good stand up fighter. Being a kick boxer i've never liked points sparring, but i am very proud of my boys, and get more proud every lesson i teach them.
  9. I'm impressed with the Steelers resolve. By the time the year ends, they will have won games with 3 different QBs. That's the sign of champion right there. Some people might say it has been ugly, but i was a line backer, and special teamer in high school so i love it.
  10. Sugar Ray Leonard, De la hoya, Holyfield, and Boom Boom befor he killed the guy in the ring that shouldn't have been in there with him.
  11. It depends on the persons general attitude, but i'm very proud to be back to training and teaching, after everything thats happened the last few years.
  12. Everyone expected pittsburgh to be 2-2 or 1-3 without Ben, but they proved that he isn't the whole team, and i'm glad. (3-0 and still building)
  13. My last post didn't sound the same after i got some sleep. What i ment was, i've always had more power than i did speed, so i used things like that exercise to develope my strength to compensate for my lack of speed. Not that that drill will make you slow it just improves you power and balance.
  14. Nice idea. I have never been fast, but i can make a dent when i connect.
  15. What 2-0 team is more surprising kansas city, miami, tampa bay, houston, or pittsburgh.
  16. I started 17 years ago, i was boxing and wrestling, then my cousin invited me to go to his karate class, and i was hooked. We trained there for a couple of years, then we found a new school closer to home, and studied there until it closed do to money issues. After that we went back to the old school that had moved, but it wasn't the same because we got used to looking at all styles with respect, and they were taught that theirs was the only good style. Then i hurt my knee, and when i was done healing they had moved again. So i continued to train on my own, but i had found a new passion for atv racing. So using what i had learned about mental and physical toughness, focus, and conditioning i became a nationally ranked cross country atv racer, going as high as number 4 in the country in my division, using my martial arts as my conditioning training. Then in 2006 i was in a car accident that destroyed my left arm, the doctors said it would be over a year if i ever healed, but using what i learned over the years i was back to work and riding in 10 months, but my arm still isn't the same. I did race again just to complete one of my goals, but my arm still wasn't strong enough, so now i teach my kids, and try to get back in shape. The martial arts are a big part of my life again, and i still continue my journey.
  17. Something else you could try is, do a squat then come up and kick. Kick with one side then go back down and come up and kick with the other side. You could even throw in a bag or other target to kick while you do this.
  18. Squats, lunges, and calf presses without weights is what i did, and it definately builds power.
  19. welcome
  20. Yea, we had a good laugh about it, but they got the point.
  21. Thats why my good bag is hanging in my parents basement, and why i had to replace one of their ceiling lights last week. I wish i had a place for one at my house, so i didn't have to take the kids down there every time i want to use it.
  22. I have had this problem with my freestanding bag too, and the only way i could stop it was to have someone hold it or put it against the wall.
  23. Definately try both, and pick the one you like better.
  24. This is funny, because anyone who knows me, knows that i have changed my fighting style to almost all kicks, because my left arm was destroyed in a car accident. So getting that much power from my right arm is surprising, because i try not to use it for more than defence most of the time.
  25. I was trying to show my kids an example, on how you can get more power if you shift your weight into a strike, instead of just trying to musle it. Well i decided to do a driving elbow on the heavy bag, and i shifted my weight full into it. The problem is where i have my hanging heavy bag the ceiling is kind of low(theres just an I bolt in the beam and then the 4 chains on the bag). I hit it, and instead of catching the bag like i usually do i turned to start talking again(i know not a good idea), and the bag swung back and shattered the light in the ceiling that is usually safe, because it's over the person thats hitting the bag. I felt like an idiot, but it was a good example of the power difference, between what they were doing and the way i wanted them to do it. I wasn't sure where to post this, but i thought it was kind of funny, and thought i would share it with everyone.
